To identify who hosts a website, check its domain registration, DNS records and the network behind its web-facing IP address. These checks often reveal the registrar, DNS provider or a service in front of the site—not necessarily the company storing the site’s files. Treat the result as a dated clue, not proof of the site owner’s hosting account.

Know which provider you are trying to identify

Several companies can be involved in one website, and their roles are not interchangeable:

  • Registrar: the service through which the domain registration is held.
  • DNS provider: the service answering authoritative DNS queries for the domain. Nameservers point toward this role; they do not show where the website’s files are stored.
  • IP network operator: the organization associated with the IP address that the hostname resolves to. That organization may not be the retail hosting brand.
  • CDN, reverse proxy or managed platform: a layer that may receive visitors’ requests before passing them to the site’s origin.
  • Origin host and account holder: the service and account actually hosting the site. Public records may not establish either conclusively.

ICANN explains that web-hosting companies typically provide server storage and an IP address, while domain registration and DNS configuration are separate functions. See ICANN’s registrant FAQs.

How to check who appears to serve a website

  1. Choose the exact hostname. Decide whether you mean the root domain, such as example.com, or a subdomain, such as www.example.com. They can resolve to different services and addresses.
  2. Check registration data with ICANN Lookup. Review the registrar and nameserver fields. ICANN says the tool queries registration data through RDAP and may use registry WHOIS as a fallback if information is unavailable through RDAP. Registration data can identify the registrar and provide DNS delegation clues, but it does not establish the hosting contract. See ICANN Lookup’s FAQs.
  3. Inspect DNS for the hostname. Check its A records (IPv4) and AAAA records (IPv6), and follow any CNAME chain to the hostname it points to. A CNAME may identify a platform or intermediary; do not stop at the first name if it points elsewhere.
  4. Look up the resulting IP address or ASN. Use an Internet number registration service to find the organization associated with the visible network. IANA’s WHOIS service accepts domain names, IP addresses and AS numbers, and links to number registries and regional Internet registry allocation data. The result identifies a network allocation or operator clue, not necessarily the hosting brand or site owner.
  5. Compare the clues. Consider the registrar, DNS provider, IP network and any CDN or platform indication together. If a site’s own documentation identifies a platform, that can add context, but a public record alone should not be presented as proof of the origin host.
  6. Record when you checked. DNS answers and domain-to-IP mappings can change. Describe the result as the provider that appeared to serve or front the hostname at the time of your checks.

How to interpret the result

What you find What it can tell you What it does not prove
Registrar in registration data Where the domain registration is held. Who stores the website’s files or pays for hosting.
Nameservers Which DNS service appears to handle authoritative DNS. Where the site is hosted.
IP address or ASN allocation The network associated with the address visible for the hostname. The exact retail host, origin server or hosting account.
CDN, proxy or platform hostname A service that may be serving or forwarding website requests. The origin infrastructure behind that service.

One company can provide more than one of these services, which can make the clues appear to agree. Even then, a matching registrar, DNS provider and network name does not independently confirm who owns the hosting account.

Why public lookups may not reveal the origin host

A CDN, reverse proxy or load balancer can answer visitors’ requests in front of the origin server. In that setup, DNS and IP lookups may show the intermediary rather than the infrastructure storing the site. Shared hosting can also place multiple sites on the same network, and IP assignments can change over time.

A 2021 study by Nguyen Phong Hoang, Arian Akhavan Niaki, Phillipa Gill and Michalis Polychronakis examined more than 200,000 websites and the challenges of mapping domains to their hosting infrastructure. In the study’s dataset, its basic IP-based method identified 84% of sites; an enhanced method identified 91%. In a longitudinal experiment, about 70% remained identifiable after two months. These are results from the paper’s methods and dataset, not a success rate for ordinary lookup tools or a guarantee about any particular site. Read the study.

When you need a definite answer

If you own the site and need to know which hosting account serves it, check the hosting control panel, provider documentation, billing records or account details. Public registration, DNS and IP lookups can help identify the visible services, but they cannot confirm which account you pay for. For someone else’s site, report only what the public records support—for example, that a named network or CDN appears to front the hostname, based on checks made on a stated date.
