Java screenshots are normally in the .minecraft/screenshots folder. Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile screenshots are usually managed by the platform’s capture gallery or photo app instead. The correct location depends first on your Minecraft edition, then on your device.
Identify your edition first
Java Edition is the PC edition for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its default screenshot key is F2, and the game saves PNG files in a screenshots folder inside its game directory. Mojang documents this behavior in its Java hotkeys guide.
Bedrock Edition includes Minecraft for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android and iPhone/iPad. Bedrock does not use the Java .minecraft folder as a universal storage location. On consoles and phones, operating-system capture tools generally own the resulting image.
On Windows, check the launcher profile or installation name. “Minecraft: Java Edition” and “Minecraft for Windows” are separate installations and can save captures differently.

Java Edition: take and locate a screenshot
Take the screenshot
- Enter a world or server and wait until the scene has rendered.
- Press F2. On some laptops, use Fn+F2 if the function row is configured as media keys.
- Wait for Minecraft’s screenshot confirmation message.
- Open the screenshots folder for the active game installation.
For a clean image, press F1 first to hide the HUD and hand, press F2, then press F1 again.
Windows
The standard Java path is:
%AppData%.minecraftscreenshots
- Press Windows+R.
- Paste
%appdata%.minecraftscreenshots. - Press Enter and sort by Date modified to find the newest PNG.
This assumes the normal Java game directory. Prism Launcher, Modrinth App, CurseForge, MultiMC-derived launchers, portable installations and custom profiles can each use a different game directory. Open the launcher’s instance or profile settings and locate its game directory; the screenshots folder is normally directly inside that directory.
macOS
The default path is:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots
- Open Finder.
- Choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter the path above and press Enter.
- Open or copy the PNG files.
The Library folder is hidden during ordinary browsing, so Go to Folder is the simplest method.
Recommended Free Tools
Linux
The standard path is:
~/.minecraft/screenshots
- Open your file manager.
- Show hidden files, commonly with Ctrl+H.
- Open
.minecraft, thenscreenshots. - Sort by date and open the newest PNG.
Bedrock Edition on Windows
Open the game, enter a world, pause it and use the camera or screenshot control. Bedrock’s supported menu experience includes a screenshot gallery; the Bedrock menu documentation describes that gallery and a Screenshots location within the Bedrock data area.

Unlike Java, Windows Bedrock does not have one path that is guaranteed for every current installation. Some installations use a location resembling:
%AppData%Minecraft BedrockUsers<numbered-user-folder>gamescom.mojangScreenshots
Treat that as installation-dependent. Older instructions pointing to a Microsoft Store package directory may not match a current installation. If the gallery shows the image but you cannot find a file:
- Use the gallery’s share or export command if available.
- Search the active Bedrock data directory for a folder named
Screenshots. - Take a test screenshot, then search Windows for PNG files modified within the last few minutes.
- Use Windows’ own capture tool if you only need an image file and not Minecraft’s camera output.
Do not use the Java %AppData%.minecraftscreenshots path for Bedrock unless you deliberately installed a separate Java edition.
Xbox
Xbox captures are handled by the console capture system, not a Java game folder. Press the Xbox button, open the capture or broadcast area, choose Recent captures, and select the Minecraft image. Labels can vary by console generation and system software; Microsoft’s capture instructions cover the general workflow.

A screenshot made with Minecraft’s Bedrock camera may appear in Minecraft’s gallery, while one made with the controller’s system capture button belongs to Xbox’s capture library. Check both when one appears empty.
PlayStation
PS4
Hold the SHARE button, or press it and choose Save Screenshot. Open Capture Gallery from the content area, select the image, and use OPTIONS to manage or copy it to USB storage. See Sony’s PS4 capture instructions.
PS5
Press the controller’s Create button and choose Take Screenshot. Find it through the Recently created card in Control Center or in Media Gallery. Sony explains these controls in its PS5 guide.
Automatic access through the PlayStation App is not universal. It depends on supported regions, console linking, app configuration and capture-upload settings; see Sony’s PS5 game-capture app requirements.
Nintendo Switch
Press the Capture Button on the left Joy-Con, Switch Lite or compatible Pro Controller. Return to the HOME Menu, open Album, and select the Minecraft screenshot. Nintendo documents the button locations and Album workflow in its Switch support guide. Use Album’s built-in sharing or transfer options to move the image elsewhere; menu wording depends on the system software.

iPhone and iPad
On Face ID iPhones, press the side button and Volume Up together. On Home-button models, use the device’s side or top button with Home. Open Photos, choose Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. Apple lists the shortcuts and album location at its screenshot support page. The cited page, published June 3, 2026, discusses iOS 18 or earlier thumbnail behavior; button placement still depends on the model.
Android
Use your phone’s normal screenshot gesture or hardware-button shortcut; combinations differ among Samsung, Google, Motorola and other manufacturers. Open Gallery, Google Photos or the device’s photo app and look for Screenshots or Pictures/Screenshots. Share from there or use a file manager to copy the image. This system album is separate from any Bedrock in-game gallery.
When the screenshot is missing
F2 does nothing
- Confirm that you are playing Java, not Bedrock.
- Try Fn+F2 on a laptop.
- Check whether another application has taken over the function key.
- Verify that you are in a world or screen where the shortcut is available.
- Check custom-client or mod controls, then use the platform’s capture shortcut as a fallback.
The Java folder is empty
- Make sure the screenshot actually produced a confirmation message.
- Check the active launcher instance rather than only the default
.minecraftdirectory. - Confirm you did not take the image in Bedrock.
- Remove file-manager filters and sort by modification date.
Bedrock shows an image but Windows does not
The gallery and local storage are not always exposed as the same user experience. Export from the gallery, search for recently modified PNG files, or use Windows capture instead of assuming an old package path.
Copying and sharing the image
- Java: copy the PNG to another folder, cloud drive or message window.
- Windows Bedrock: export from the gallery or copy the discovered
Screenshotsfile. - Xbox and PlayStation: use the console sharing interface, supported mobile app features or USB export.
- Switch: use Album’s sharing or transfer controls.
- iPhone, iPad and Android: share from Photos or Gallery, or connect the device to a computer.
Or skip the browser setup
If you are collecting screenshots of Minecraft pages, maps or documentation rather than locating a player’s saved capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request and can remove cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.
