Open Chrome Settings from the More menu: on a computer, select the three-dot button at the top right and choose Settings; on Android or iPhone/iPad, tap the three-dot More button and tap Settings. On desktop, you can also enter chrome://settings in the address bar.
These steps reflect Google’s Chrome Help guidance as of September 2026. Menu labels and available controls can vary by platform, Chrome version, and device-management policy.
Find Chrome Settings on a computer
In Chrome for Windows, macOS, Linux, or Chromebook:
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot More button near the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- Select Settings.
Google’s current desktop path is More → Settings. If the menu is hard to locate, click the address bar, type chrome://settings, and press Enter (or Return on Mac). This is a Chrome-internal address, not a regular website URL.

On a Chromebook, Chrome’s browser settings open the same way. Some controls—particularly system, privacy, or performance options—may take you to ChromeOS Settings instead of staying in the browser.
Find Chrome Settings on Android
- Open the Chrome app.
- Tap the three-dot More button beside the address bar.
- Tap Settings.
Android Chrome has a different set and arrangement of controls from desktop Chrome. For phone-wide permissions, such as camera access or notifications, you may also need Android’s Settings app. Google’s Android Chrome instructions use the More menu for browser options.

Find Chrome Settings on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Chrome app.
- Tap the three-dot More button.
- Tap Settings.
Options such as the default search engine and some content controls are available here, but iPhone and iPad Chrome do not expose every desktop setting. For example, Google documents the iOS path for browser search as More → Settings → Search engine. Some device-wide controls are managed in the iOS Settings app. See Google’s Chrome setup and settings guidance for iPhone and iPad.
Find a particular setting quickly
Once Settings is open, use its search field. Try a short, specific phrase such as cookies, passwords, homepage, camera, or dark mode. Searching is often faster than guessing which category contains a control, especially when a Chrome update moves or renames a section.

Not every result stays within Chrome. A setting can open a Google Account page, ChromeOS Settings, or your computer or phone’s system settings. On managed devices, an administrator or parental-control policy may also lock a setting or make it unavailable; Google notes, for example, that Secure DNS may be restricted in those circumstances (Chrome security settings).
Change a permission for one website
If only one site needs access to your camera, microphone, location, or another feature, use that site’s settings rather than changing a global default:

- Open the website in Chrome on desktop.
- Select the site-information icon to the left of the address in the address bar.
- Select Site settings, then change the relevant permission.
This applies to the selected site. Global controls under Privacy and security → Site settings affect sites more broadly. Even if Chrome allows a permission, the operating system may still need to grant the app access to that device feature. On iPhone or iPad, available Chrome content controls are under More → Settings → Content Settings; the options differ from desktop. See Google’s iOS content-settings guidance.

Chrome Settings control the browser: its default search provider, passwords, privacy, appearance, and site permissions. Google Search settings control the results and experience on Google Search—for example, SafeSearch, language, or other search preferences. Changing Chrome’s default search engine does not necessarily change Google Search preferences, and vice versa. Google Search preferences are adjusted on Google Search.

Likewise, Chrome cannot necessarily override device-level controls. If a camera or microphone permission is denied in Android, iOS, Windows, or macOS, changing a browser setting alone may not be enough.
If the Settings menu is missing or will not open
- Check that you are in Chrome. Edge, Brave, and other Chromium-based browsers have similar menus, but their settings and labels differ.
- Look for Chrome’s browser menu. On desktop, the More button is generally at the top right; on mobile, it is in the app toolbar. Make sure you are not opening a webpage’s own menu. If the browser is full-screen or the window is narrow, exit full-screen or widen the window and check again.
- Use the desktop internal address. Enter
chrome://settingsin Chrome’s address bar. - Restart Chrome and check for an update. A temporary issue or older build can affect how a page opens or how a menu appears.
- Check for restrictions. On work, school, or parent-managed devices, some controls may be hidden, disabled, or marked as managed. Contact the administrator if a policy controls the option.
- If settings keep changing unexpectedly, review extensions and unwanted software. On desktop, use More → Extensions → Manage extensions to disable or remove unfamiliar extensions. Google recommends checking for unwanted programs when Chrome settings change without permission; see its Chrome troubleshooting guidance.
- Consider resetting settings only if needed. This can undo unwanted browser changes, but it is not a full reinstall or a malware-removal tool.
Reinstalling Chrome is a later troubleshooting step if the Settings interface itself remains unavailable. It may not fix a problem caused by a device policy or unwanted software that remains on the computer.
What a Chrome settings reset does
On desktop, the reset path is More → Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults → Reset settings. Google says a reset does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords, but it restores or changes browser preferences such as the default search engine, homepage and startup behavior, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. It is not a complete reset: some font and accessibility settings remain unchanged. Check Google’s reset instructions for the current details.
A reset is different from deleting browsing data, making a new Chrome profile, uninstalling Chrome, removing malware, or powerwashing a Chromebook. Choose the action that matches the problem; resetting browser preferences will not erase every trace of activity or repair every cause of unwanted changes.
