To find a public MCP server on GitHub, start with GitHub’s MCP Registry or its Agent finder, then inspect the server’s repository and documentation before connecting it to an MCP-compatible client. Treat a listing as a discovery lead—not a safety review. Check what the server can do, how it connects, what credentials it needs, and whether you trust the code and operator.
Where to find public MCP servers on GitHub
Start with GitHub’s MCP Registry
GitHub describes its MCP Registry as a curated list of partner and community servers. It is in public preview and may change, so it is useful for discovery but should not be treated as a complete catalog or a guarantee about a server’s security or quality. Browse the GitHub MCP Registry and follow a candidate’s links to its project documentation and source repository.
Try GitHub’s Agent finder
GitHub’s Agent finder searches capabilities in its ecosystem, including MCP servers, tools, agents, and skills. Use it when you know the capability you want but are open to different implementations. Verify that a result is actually an MCP server suitable for your client; the finder covers more than servers.

Search repositories directly
Search GitHub for the service or capability you need, then open promising repositories and read their README and linked setup documentation. Search results can surface projects that are not listed in the Registry, but they also require more independent evaluation.
#1 Best Overall
Do not mistake modelcontextprotocol/servers for a directory of every public server. Its README describes a small collection of reference implementations and points readers to the MCP Registry to browse published servers. The project says its examples are educational rather than production-ready.
Use metadata as an identification aid
The MCP Registry repository describes server.json as standardized metadata for publishing servers to registries and supporting client discovery and package management. It can help you identify what a project says it provides; a metadata file is not an independent security audit.
How to evaluate a candidate before connecting it
Compare candidates against the task you actually need to perform. MCP servers can expose tools, resources, and prompts; identify which of those the candidate provides and whether the exposed functions fit the job. The MCP specification describes these server features and the authorization framework for HTTP-based transports.

- Read the README, setup guide, limitations, and linked documentation. Confirm the documented behavior matches the task.
- Check who maintains the repository, its license, recent releases or activity, and whether maintainers respond to issues. These are evaluation signals, not proof that a project is safe or supported.
- Look for a clear explanation of what the server does, which services it contacts, and how errors or sensitive data are handled.
- Review installation commands before running them, especially commands that download and execute packages or scripts.
Check client, transport, and deployment fit
Confirm that your chosen client supports the server’s connection method and any prerequisites in its setup instructions. GitHub documents broad support for local servers in several IDEs and growing support for remote servers, while directing readers to each editor’s own documentation for specific support. Do not assume that a configuration for one client or transport works in another.
Choose local or remote operation based on the project’s supported options and your needs. Local execution may fit a workflow where you want to run the server on your own machine; a remote endpoint may suit a service designed to be hosted and accessed over a network. Google’s repository provides examples of Google-managed remote MCP services and Google Cloud deployment guidance, but remote hosting is not required for every MCP server.

Understand authentication and permissions
Find out which credentials are required, which account or data they can reach, and what actions the server can take. Requirements vary by server and client. For HTTP-based transports, the MCP specification describes an authorization framework, but it does not make every server’s authentication behavior identical.
Give a server only the access needed for its intended task. Where practical, test it with non-sensitive data in a sandbox or test account before granting access to important systems.
Connect a public server using its documented setup
There is no universal MCP installation command or configuration file: the correct steps depend on the server, transport, and host client. Follow the server’s official setup guide together with the client’s current instructions, and confirm the package, command, and transport are still supported before use.
- Choose a candidate. Record the repository and documentation links, the functions you need, and the server’s stated limitations.
- Confirm prerequisites. Check the required runtime, package source, operating system support, transport, and credentials in the project’s setup guide.
- Review the install and launch instructions. Inspect commands before executing them. Know what they download, what code will run, and whether the process contacts external services.
- Configure your MCP client. Use that client’s current documentation and the server’s client-specific example, if available. Do not copy a configuration blindly from a different host.
- Provide credentials narrowly. Use the least-privileged credentials that will accomplish the task, and follow the client’s documented method for storing secrets.
- Validate the connection and test a low-risk operation. Confirm the client recognizes the server and its available capabilities. Test with a harmless request before using it on sensitive or consequential work.
- Recheck after changes. Revisit the repository and client instructions when updating the server, changing transports, or switching hosts.
GitHub Copilot repository configuration is host-specific
For repository-level setup in GitHub Copilot, GitHub documents entering a JSON MCP configuration in repository settings and validating its syntax. The documentation says required variables or keys can be added as Agents secrets or as variables prefixed with COPILOT_MCP_. Follow GitHub’s current instructions for the exact settings path and configuration expected by your repository; this is a Copilot workflow, not a universal MCP setup method.
The official reference-server repository includes client-specific installation steps and example configurations. Use these as examples for that project only, and verify the package, command, transport, and configuration remain supported before using them.
Public listing does not mean safe or production-ready
The Model Context Protocol servers project README states: “They are meant as educational examples for developers building their own MCP servers, not as production-ready solutions.” The same README tells developers to assess security requirements and apply safeguards for their own threat model and use case. That warning applies to the project’s reference examples; it is not a claim that every public MCP server is unsafe.

- Read code and installation instructions before running a server, especially if setup automatically downloads or executes software.
- Check which tools can read or change data, what credentials they use, and whether they communicate with remote services.
- Limit permissions and credentials to the task. Use a sandbox or test environment when the consequences of an error would matter.
- Recheck releases and instructions: projects, registries, and client support can change.
Compare candidates without mistaking discovery for ranking
If several servers seem suitable, compare them on the dimensions that affect your use case. A catalog placement alone does not establish which one is best.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Capability and data | Does it expose the tools, resources, or prompts you need? What information can it access or alter? |
| Project evidence | Are setup steps, limitations, licensing, maintenance, and issue responses clear? |
| Client and transport | Does your intended client support the documented connection method? |
| Authentication and scope | Which credentials are required, what do they authorize, and can their permissions be narrowed? |
| Local or remote operation | Does the project support the deployment pattern you want, and who operates the server in a remote setup? |
| Setup and upkeep | What prerequisites and configuration are involved, and how will you review updates? |

If your task is to capture a website rather than connect to an unrelated MCP server, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. The call below uses the documented API endpoint; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting common setup failures
The client does not show the server
Check that you used the configuration format and location documented for that specific client. For GitHub Copilot repository configuration, validate the JSON syntax and confirm required variables or keys are available through the documented Agents secrets or COPILOT_MCP_-prefixed variables workflow.
Rank #4
The server command fails to start
Compare the command, package, runtime, and prerequisites with the server’s current setup guide. An example for another client or an older release may not match your environment; do not guess at a replacement command.
Authentication fails or the server cannot reach expected data
Check the server’s documented credential requirements and the client’s secret or variable configuration. Verify that the credential is available to the process and has the minimum permissions needed for the operation. For HTTP transports, consult the server’s instructions and the client’s support for the protocol’s authorization approach.
The server connects but does not do the task
Inspect the tools, resources, or prompts it actually exposes and compare them with the intended task. A successful connection does not mean a server has the capability you expected.
You are unsure whether it is suitable for production
Look for project-specific production guidance and assess the code, operator, permissions, and failure impact against your own threat model. The reference server collection explicitly characterizes its examples as educational, not production-ready; do not generalize those examples into a production recommendation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GitHub MCP Registry a complete list of public MCP servers?
No. GitHub describes it as a curated catalog in public preview; repository search and other discovery tools may surface additional projects.
Does a server.json file mean a server has passed a security review?
No. It is standardized descriptive metadata for registry publishing, discovery, and package management, not an independent security assessment.
