Start with the official documentation for the specific API you want to use. It is the best place to find current endpoint details, authentication requirements, and request examples; if you need an offline copy, use the documentation page’s current PDF or export control when available. A general REST tutorial can explain request basics, but it cannot replace the target API’s own reference.

Where to find a trustworthy REST API tutorial PDF

There is no single PDF that teaches every API’s endpoints, credentials, and rules. Begin by identifying the service you plan to call, then look for its official documentation. The online version is especially important when an API’s version, authentication process, or endpoint behavior may change.

For general request-building concepts

GitHub Docs’ REST API guide is a useful official example of how to construct a request. It explains the method and path, headers, media types, authentication, and parameters, and demonstrates requests using GitHub CLI, curl, and JavaScript. The guide’s page may offer a PDF or Markdown export control. Use the control currently shown on the page rather than relying on a remembered download address: a permanent standalone PDF URL for this guide is not established here.

For a hands-on API Gateway exercise

AWS maintains an index of Amazon API Gateway REST API tutorials. It includes exercises involving Lambda or HTTP integrations, private integrations, AWS service integrations, proxy APIs, and creating APIs with SDKs or the CLI. Choose this route if your goal is to build within API Gateway, not if you need a vendor-neutral introduction. The exercises are platform-specific and may require setup; check the current tutorial for prerequisites and possible account or service costs before starting. AWS documentation pages also surface PDF options, but confirm the export control on the page you intend to save.

When you already know the service

Use the service’s own getting-started material and API reference. Microsoft Learn’s Azure REST API getting-started material describes constructing requests and acquiring an access token. Salesforce Developers documents Salesforce REST resources, methods, and Bearer authentication. These are service-specific guides: their credentials and conventions should not be assumed to apply to another API.

Prefer the current web documentation if a PDF is missing, undated, or disconnected from the live reference. A saved file is handy offline, but it can become stale. The documentation pages and versions can change, so check the live source before relying on an old copy for credentials or endpoint behavior.

How to judge a REST API tutorial PDF before using it

Before following an example, check whether the document is authoritative and specific enough for the task. A polished PDF can still be wrong for your service or version.

  • Publisher: Is it published by the API provider or an identified, credible educator? For endpoint behavior and credentials, prefer the provider’s official reference.
  • Update date and API version: Look for when the material was updated and which version it describes. If either is absent, treat it as a learning aid rather than proof of current behavior.
  • Target API: Confirm the PDF is for the service you intend to call. A generic REST lesson can teach request structure but cannot tell you the target API’s required endpoint, scopes, or parameters.
  • Request components: Make sure the example identifies the HTTP method, endpoint path, headers, authentication, and any required path, query, or body parameters. It should also show or describe the expected response.
  • Client or language: Check whether the example uses a tool you can run, such as curl, a command-line client, JavaScript, or an SDK. Translate the request carefully if you use a different client.
  • Link to the live reference: A tutorial that points to the current endpoint reference gives you a way to verify details that may have changed since the PDF was made.
  • Offline availability: Confirm the page actually offers a PDF or export option. If it offers Markdown instead, that may still be useful offline, but it is not a PDF.

Never put a real access token in a shared tutorial, screenshot, or document. GitHub advises treating access tokens like passwords. Use a placeholder in notes and keep the actual credential private.

How to use a tutorial to make your first API request

Work from one small, read-only operation in the target API’s official reference. That keeps the first test focused and avoids changing or deleting data while you are learning the request format.

  1. Choose a read-only endpoint. In the target API’s reference, select an operation that retrieves information rather than creating, editing, or deleting it. The correct method and effect are specific to that endpoint.
  2. Copy the method and path. Preserve the documented HTTP method and endpoint path. Replace any required path placeholders with values appropriate to your account or test data.
  3. Supply the required request details. Add the headers, authentication, and path, query, or body parameters the endpoint requires. Do not borrow an authorization format or permission assumption from a different service.
  4. Run the example in its stated client. If the tutorial gives a curl, CLI, or language example, use that first before translating it. This reduces the number of things that could be wrong at once.
  5. Inspect the result. Check the HTTP status and response body, then compare them with the expected result in the tutorial or endpoint reference. If the result differs, verify the method, path, parameters, authentication, and headers against the live documentation.
  6. Only then adapt it. Change one input at a time, such as a query parameter or resource identifier, and confirm the response still matches the endpoint’s documented behavior.

What the request parts mean in practice

Every request has a method and a path. The method describes the kind of operation being requested; the path identifies the endpoint. Headers carry additional request information, which can include authentication or media-type details. Parameters can appear in the path, query, or request body, depending on the API. The API’s reference—not a generic tutorial—defines which parts are required and what values are valid.

For example, GitHub Docs states: “Every request to the REST API includes an HTTP method and a path.” Its guide also demonstrates request construction using GitHub CLI, curl, and JavaScript. Use those examples to understand the shape of a request, then consult the relevant endpoint reference for the method and parameters of the operation you want.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to capture a documentation page rather than manually print or save it in a browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This example captures ScreenshotNeo’s documentation page as a WebP image; it is a screenshot, not a downloaded REST tutorial PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for supported options.

ScreenshotNeo says it accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Every feature is available on every plan. Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing gives two months free. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Common problems and how to recover

The PDF has no update date or API version

Do not infer that its endpoint examples are current. Find the live official documentation for the target API and verify the endpoint, parameters, and credentials there. If you cannot establish which version the PDF covers, use it only to learn general request concepts.

The example works in the tutorial’s client but not yours

First reproduce it in the client shown in the tutorial. Then translate one request component at a time, preserving the method, path, headers, authentication, and parameters. A mismatch in any of those can change the request.

The API rejects the request

Compare the request with the live endpoint reference: check the method and path, required parameters, headers, and authentication format. Authentication and permissions differ between APIs, so do not assume a token or header from another service will work.

The response differs from the tutorial

Confirm the tutorial targets the same API and version as the endpoint reference you are using. Recheck the values substituted for path placeholders and the parameters sent with the request. The provider’s current endpoint reference should settle the expected method and parameter details.

You cannot find a PDF download

Check the documentation page itself for its current PDF or export control. If none is offered, use the live page or an available export format such as Markdown rather than relying on an unverified standalone URL.

Choosing between a general tutorial and a platform exercise

Resource Best fit What to verify
GitHub Docs REST API guide Learning request parts and seeing examples in GitHub CLI, curl, and JavaScript Current page export options and the endpoint-specific reference
AWS API Gateway REST API tutorial index Building an API using API Gateway exercises, including integrations, proxy APIs, or SDK/CLI workflows Platform prerequisites, account or service costs, and the current PDF option
Microsoft Learn Azure REST API getting-started material Azure-oriented request construction and access-token acquisition The relevant Azure API’s own current endpoint and authentication details
Salesforce Developers REST reference Salesforce resources, methods, and Bearer authentication The resource and operation relevant to the task
General REST tutorial Understanding broad request concepts when the target API is not the focus It cannot establish a specific service’s endpoints, credentials, or current behavior

Pick by target API first, then by whether you need a beginner explanation or a build-along exercise, which client or language it uses, whether it covers authentication and permissions, how clearly it identifies its version and date, and whether an offline format is available. For a working request, the service’s current endpoint reference is the deciding source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one REST API tutorial PDF that covers every service?

No. A general guide can teach request structure, but endpoint paths, parameters, credentials, and permissions are defined by each API provider.

Can I use a REST API tutorial PDF without internet access?

You can read a saved copy offline, but you may need the live provider documentation to verify current endpoint, version, and authentication details.
