To find an old ChatGPT conversation, use Search in the sidebar—not ChatGPT’s web-search feature. Search looks through conversation titles and content, including archived chats. A conversation missing from the sidebar may simply be older than the sidebar’s compact recent-chat list.
“Started threads” is not the name of a documented ChatGPT feature. OpenAI describes these as conversations or chats, and its current help guidance documents keyword search—not a separate filter for conversations you started.
Search ChatGPT history on the web
- Sign in to ChatGPT in your browser and open the left sidebar.
- Select the magnifying-glass Search control, or use Ctrl+K on Windows or Linux and Cmd+K on Mac.
- Enter a distinctive word or phrase from the conversation.
- Select the matching result to reopen the conversation and continue it.
OpenAI says chat-history search checks conversation titles and content. Conversations generally become searchable shortly after they occur—within a few minutes, according to its chat-history search guidance. Interface details may vary by account or app version.

- Open the ChatGPT app and make sure you are signed in to the right account.
- Open the left sidebar and use its Search bar.
- Enter a specific term or phrase, then open the conversation in the results.
The location and appearance of controls can vary between app versions, but OpenAI’s documented mobile route is through Search in the sidebar.

Choose keywords that are likely to match
OpenAI describes the search as supporting exact matches. A vague query or a paraphrase may not find the chat, so search for wording likely to appear in its title or messages. Try, in order:
- A distinctive phrase from one of your prompts or ChatGPT’s replies.
- A project or product name, filename, person’s name, error message, or unusual number.
- A short fragment of the phrase if a longer query returns nothing.
- Terms you think may have appeared in the conversation title.
For example, project is broad; Acme API timeout is more distinctive. Search the conversation’s content, not just the title you remember. Text inside Canvas is not included in chat-history search, according to OpenAI.

Why an old conversation may be missing from the sidebar
The sidebar is not necessarily a complete list of every conversation. OpenAI says it keeps a compact list of recent chats for quicker loading; older conversations may fall out of that view without being deleted. Searching for or opening an older chat can retrieve it and may refresh the sidebar list. In other words, not visible in the sidebar does not automatically mean deleted.
Archived conversations are still searchable
An archived conversation does not appear in the ordinary sidebar, but OpenAI says archived chats remain searchable. Search for it first; you can also access archived conversations separately through Settings. If you cannot find it, verify that you are in the account and workspace where you created it.

If search finds nothing
- Try different exact wording. Use a rare phrase, name, filename, or error message; shorten the query if needed.
- Check the account and workspace. If you use more than one sign-in or workspace, look in the one where you had the conversation.
- Check Archived. Archived chats are searchable but absent from the normal sidebar.
- If the chat is new, wait briefly. OpenAI says indexing may take a few minutes.
- Consider where the text appeared. Canvas content is not searchable through chat-history search.
- Consider how the chat was created. OpenAI says logged-out users cannot save a full ongoing chat history; a conversation may be available only for the current session in the same browser. See its guidance on the ChatGPT home page.
- Determine whether it was deleted. OpenAI says deleted conversations are removed from the search index, so chat-history search cannot retrieve them.
These cases are different: an archived chat remains searchable; an older chat may simply be missing from the sidebar’s recent list; a deleted chat is removed from search. The search feature cannot recover a deleted conversation.
Chat-history search is not ChatGPT Search
Chat-history search finds conversations already associated with your ChatGPT account. ChatGPT Search searches the web for information; the resulting interaction is a conversation in your ChatGPT history unless deleted. The two features have different purposes—see OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search overview. “Search history” can also mean browser history, which is separate from both.

OpenAI’s documented history-search controls search conversation titles and content. The guidance does not document a filter that shows only conversations you started, nor does it document a date filter. To locate a particular chat, search for words in its title or messages instead.
