Open github.com/trending, select Repositories, then narrow the live list with the programming-language, spoken-language, and time controls available on the page. Open promising projects to assess them, then star them or save them in a list for later. For discoveries beyond Trending, use GitHub repository search or gh search repos. If you want a dated visual record of the list, capture the page after setting its filters.

Open GitHub Trending

Visit github.com/trending. Start with the Repositories view to discover projects; the page also offers a Developers view. Its live controls include a spoken-language filter, which is different from filtering by a repository’s programming language. The list changes over time, so treat it as a current discovery surface rather than a permanent ranking.

If you plan to share or compare a particular set of results, record the date and the selected filters. Otherwise a reader may be unable to reproduce the same list later, even if they visit the same URL.

Filter the list to match what you want to find

Choose a time horizon

GitHub’s published explanation describes daily, weekly, and monthly Trending time buckets. A daily view can be useful for a quick snapshot; weekly and monthly views cover broader periods. The explanation does not establish that one window is inherently better, and its details should not be mistaken for a guarantee about every control or result on today’s page.

Choose a programming language

Select a language when you want to focus on repositories primarily written in it. Choose the page’s equivalent of an unrestricted language selection when you want to scan across languages. GitHub’s explanation says its language filter applies to a repository’s primary language and describes an unknown-language category for cases where its language library cannot determine the language. That explanation was published on August 13, 2013 and updated on December 6, 2019, so check the live page’s current controls rather than assuming every historical detail remains unchanged.

Use spoken language for a different kind of filter

The spoken-language control can help when the language of a repository’s description or README matters to your search. It is not the same as a programming-language filter: a project written in one programming language may document itself in another spoken language.

GitHub’s historical explanation says Trending data was calculated eight times a day and grouped into daily, weekly, and monthly buckets. It also described a top-25 display and ranking signals that included stars, forks, commits, follows, and pageviews, with attention to how recently activity occurred. Those are claims in GitHub’s article, not verified current refresh, result-count, or ranking rules. The article’s own wording emphasized recency: “It’s not just about total numbers, but also how recently the events happened.”

Inspect repositories before you save or use them

A Trending position is a discovery cue, not a quality, security, maintenance, or suitability endorsement. Open a candidate’s repository page and assess it against your needs before adopting its code. Useful checks include:

Rank #2
CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Starter PRO Kit - 4GB RAM
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
  • Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
  • Documentation: Is the project’s purpose clear, and are setup and usage instructions understandable?
  • Recent activity: Are there recent commits or other signs of maintenance relevant to your use case? Activity alone does not guarantee support.
  • License: Does the repository state terms compatible with how you plan to use or distribute the code?
  • Context: Do the maintainers, dependencies, issue history, and project scope make sense for the task?

GitHub’s historical description of a Trending row mentioned the owner and repository name, primary language, description, a star button, and contributors. The current listing may differ; use the repository itself as the place to verify details instead of assuming each row shows the same information.

Save a promising repository for later

Star it

Open the repository and use GitHub’s star control. GitHub describes stars as a way to find repositories again and discover related content. A star is a useful bookmark, but it does not record why you saved the project or mean that you have reviewed it.

Organize stars into lists

GitHub’s documentation describes creating public lists and adding starred repositories to them from the Starred dropdown. The stars page supports searching, sorting, and filtering saved repositories. GitHub labels lists as a public preview and says the feature is subject to change.

Keep list names specific enough to help you act later—for example, “Read later” or “Try locally.” If you need to remember why a project caught your attention, keep that note in your own tracking system; the cited GitHub documentation does not establish a note field attached to each saved star.

Find projects beyond Trending with repository search

Trending is a broad discovery view. Repository search is more useful when you already know a constraint, such as a topic, language, or recency window. GitHub’s repository-search documentation describes qualifiers including:

  • language:LANGUAGE to narrow by programming language.
  • topic:TOPIC to find repositories tagged with a topic.
  • created:<YYYY-MM-DD to constrain creation dates.
  • pushed:>YYYY-MM-DD to find repositories with a push after a date. GitHub explains that this qualifier concerns the most recent commit made on any branch.

For example, search GitHub repositories for topic:machine-learning language:Python pushed:>2025-01-01 if you want Python repositories with that topic and a push after the chosen date. Change the topic, language, or date to suit the question you are investigating; a recent push is not a substitute for checking project quality or compatibility.

Search from the command line with GitHub CLI

GitHub CLI’s gh search repos command supports structured filters such as language, license, owner, topic, stars, creation date, and update date. It also supports JSON output and formatting options, which can help when you want to inspect or process results in a script. The command manual states that the default maximum is 30 results.

For example, start with a simple query:

gh search repos "machine learning" --language Python --limit 30

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Desktop PC with SSD (Fully Assembled) (256 GB SSD)
  • Fully assembled for plug-and-play operation
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM
  • 256 GB PCIe Pi NVMe SSD (Pre-loaded with Pi 64-Bit OS)
  • M.2 HAT+
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Pi 5

To request structured output for fields you want to inspect, use the command’s JSON option, for example:

gh search repos "machine learning" --language Python --limit 30 --json name, owner, description, url, stargazersCount

CLI flags and output fields can depend on the installed GitHub CLI version. If a command rejects an option, consult gh search repos --help for the flags supported by your installation. Do not substitute gh repo list when your goal is broad Trending-style discovery: that command lists repositories owned by a user or organization, while gh search repos is the documented search route.

Keep a dated record of a Trending snapshot

If you need a record for a report, review, or discussion, note the access date and all selected filters alongside it. A screenshot preserves what was visible at that moment; it does not preserve a stable ranking or establish why a repository appeared. Avoid presenting a saved image as a current or enduring leaderboard.

For a simple manual record, open Trending, set the desired controls, capture the visible page using your browser’s screenshot function, and save the image with a filename or note that includes the date and filters. If you need a repeatable capture, an automated page image can document the displayed list, but it cannot make GitHub’s changing results static.

Troubleshooting discovery and saving

  • The same search shows different repositories later: Trending is live and its entries can change. Record the access date and filters when the exact result set matters.
  • You cannot find a repository by its programming language: Check that you chose the programming-language control rather than spoken language, and verify the repository’s primary language on its page.
  • A CLI search returns fewer results than expected: The documented default maximum is 30. Check the command’s help for supported limit and filtering options, then broaden or adjust your search.
  • A saved star is hard to locate: Use the starred repositories page’s documented search, sort, and filter tools, or group starred projects into a list.
  • You are treating popularity as a safety check: Review documentation, license, recent activity, and project context directly; a Trending result or star count does not prove a project is appropriate to run.

Sources and scope

The live Trending page is at github.com/trending. GitHub’s explanation of its Trending page is historical: it was published August 13, 2013 and updated December 6, 2019. Its ranking details and display limits above are attributed to that explanation rather than presented as current specifications. Repository search and star-list behavior are described in GitHub’s documentation, and command syntax should be checked against the help for the installed GitHub CLI version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save Trending results so another person sees the same repositories?

A star or list helps organize repositories, but neither makes a live Trending result set permanent. For a reproducible record, retain the access date, filters, and a dated capture or other record.

Does starring a repository endorse it?

GitHub documents stars as a way to find repositories again and discover related content. A star is not a project review, endorsement, or license check.
