For Echo Dot 2nd–5th generation: keep the speaker plugged in, then hold Volume Down and Microphone Off together for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again, then let the Dot enter setup mode. For a 1st-generation Dot, use the physical reset button underneath with a paper clip.
The correct method depends on your goal. A restart may be enough for a temporary glitch; an Action-button reset can preserve smart-home connections; a full factory reset erases the Dot’s local settings and connections.
Choose the right reset first

Amazon documents the two button-based choices for Echo Dot 2nd–5th generation models in its current reset instructions. The Action-button method is not the complete erase: it is designed to retain smart-home connections.

- 1st generation: small puck with a physical reset opening/button on the underside.
- 2nd generation: puck-shaped body with physical volume buttons and a microphone-off button.
- 3rd generation: fabric-covered puck with four buttons on top.
- 4th and 5th generation: spherical designs that look similar.
Amazon groups the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th generations under the same full-reset procedure, so you do not need to distinguish among those four models. Do not use that procedure on a 1st-generation Dot, which has a physical reset button.

Factory reset an Echo Dot 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th generation
- Leave the Echo Dot connected to its power adapter.
- Find the Volume Down and Microphone Off buttons on top.
- Press and hold both buttons at the same time for 20 seconds. Do not release early.
- Continue until the light ring turns off and comes back on.
- Wait while the Dot enters setup mode. An orange setup light is common, but the decisive confirmation in Amazon’s instructions is the light-ring cycle followed by setup mode.
- Set it up again in the Alexa app, or leave it in setup mode for the next owner.
This full reset removes the Dot’s personal information, device settings, saved Wi-Fi information, device connections and smart-home connections. It does not automatically mean that every item stored in your Amazon account—such as voice history, routines, lists, reminders, skills or subscriptions—has been deleted.
Factory reset a 1st-generation Echo Dot
- If necessary, disconnect the power adapter so you can safely turn the Dot over.
- Locate the small Reset opening/button on the underside.
- Insert a paper clip or similar tool and press the reset button.
- Hold it until the light ring turns off and comes back on, then wait for setup mode.
Use only the clearly marked reset opening. Do not force a tool into an unrelated hole. If the underside layout does not match this description, identify the model before proceeding. Amazon staff describe this 1st-generation method in its support forum guidance.

Reset while keeping smart-home connections
If you are troubleshooting and want to retain your smart-home setup, press and hold the Action button on a 2nd–5th generation Dot for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on, then allow the device to enter setup mode. Because this reset can keep smart-home connections, do not use it when your objective is a complete privacy erase or a clean transfer to another person. For those cases, use Volume Down + Microphone Off instead.

When the Dot is in setup mode, use the Alexa app on a compatible phone or tablet:

- Open Alexa.
- Select Devices.
- Tap the plus (+) button.
- Choose Add Device.
- Select Amazon Echo.
- Select Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the intended Amazon account and Wi-Fi network.
App labels can vary slightly by version, platform and region. You will need the Alexa app, the Amazon account that should own the speaker, Wi-Fi credentials, the Echo Dot and its power adapter. See Amazon’s setup flow if the labels differ.
If the reset does not work
- No response: confirm the supplied adapter is connected, unplug the Dot for 10 seconds, reconnect it and wait for startup before trying again.
- Buttons seem ineffective: press both buttons simultaneously and hold for the full 20 seconds. Releasing early can cancel the reset.
- No lights at all: try another outlet and inspect the adapter. A failed power supply or hardware fault cannot be repaired by a reset.
- No orange light: do not rely on color alone. Check for the required light-ring off/on cycle and entry into setup mode. Wrong buttons, a booting or frozen device, or a 1st-generation model are common explanations.
- Smart-home devices remain connected: the Action-button reset may have been used. Repeat the full Volume Down plus Microphone Off procedure.
Selling, gifting or disposing of the Echo Dot
Perform the complete factory reset first. Then, while signed in to the former owner’s Alexa or Amazon account, check the device list. If the Dot is still shown as an active registered device, use Amazon’s separate deregister option. A physical reset returns the speaker to setup mode, but it should not be treated as proof that every account-side record has disappeared.

Deregistration and resetting are different: the reset is performed on the hardware, while deregistration removes the device from the Amazon account. The recipient should add and register the Dot under their own account.

A factory reset clears the information and connections stored on the Dot according to Amazon’s device instructions. If privacy is the reason for resetting, separately review Alexa voice history, routines, lists, reminders, skills, subscriptions and other cloud-based account data. Removing the speaker does not by itself promise deletion of all of those records.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reset an Echo Dot without the Alexa app?
Yes. The reset itself is performed with the Dot’s buttons, or with the underside reset button on a 1st-generation model. You need the Alexa app afterward if you want to configure the speaker again.
Will a factory reset delete my Alexa routines and voice history?
It removes the Dot’s local settings and connections, but routines, voice history and other account-level data should be reviewed and deleted separately in your Amazon account if needed.
Do I need to deregister a Dot after resetting it?
For a sale or gift, verify the device in the former owner’s Amazon device list and deregister it if it remains registered. Deregistration is separate from the physical factory reset.

After the reset and account verification, the new owner should open the Alexa app, choose Devices, plus, Add Device, Amazon Echo, then Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more, and follow the setup prompts.
