How to Extract Images From Web Pages starts with the simplest option: in Chrome, right-click the visible image and choose Save Image As. If that saves the wrong rendition—or the image is hidden in responsive HTML, CSS, or a script-loaded resource—inspect the page source and DevTools, then retrieve the exact asset URL. This guide shows which method to use, how to preserve resolution and format, how to download several linked assets, and what image rights still apply after you save a file.

Choose the method that fits the image

Situation Best starting point What to verify
One image is visible Chrome Save Image As The downloaded file opens and has the required resolution
The context menu saves an unexpected file Inspect the element and its source attributes srcset, sizes, and picture/source candidates
The image is decorative or absent from the HTML Inspect CSS declarations and loaded resources Background-image URLs and generated styles
You need to identify everything the page requested Chrome DevTools Network or Sources Image requests, formats, dimensions, and response status
You need multiple linked assets GNU Wget recursive retrieval HTML/CSS references, authentication, and site restrictions

These approaches are complementary. A browser is fastest for a single visible file; source inspection reveals alternatives; DevTools shows what actually loaded; and Wget can follow references in HTML and CSS. None guarantees access to an authenticated, script-generated, or access-controlled image.

Save a visible image in Chrome

  1. Open the page containing the image.
  2. Right-click the image.
  3. Select Save Image As.
  4. Choose a folder, keep the offered extension unless you have a reason to change it, and select Save.
  5. Open the saved file and check its pixel dimensions, transparency, and visual content.

Chrome documents this command for downloading an image. The saved file is the rendition supplied to the browser, which may be smaller than an original stored elsewhere on the site.

When you need the whole page

Saving an image is different from archiving a page. Chrome’s documented page command is More > More Tools > Save Page As. That saves the page and its associated files as a page copy; it is not a way to extract every image in a JavaScript application or to establish reuse permission.

Find the real image URL in HTML

An <img> element normally has a src URL, but modern pages often provide several candidates. Right-click the image, choose Inspect, and look at the selected element.

Check src, srcset, and sizes

The src value may be an absolute URL such as https://example.com/photo.jpg or a relative URL such as /images/photo.jpg. A relative URL must be resolved against the page’s address. Do not assume it is the highest-resolution file.

srcset lists alternative files, commonly with width descriptors (for example, small.jpg 480w, large.jpg 1600w) or pixel-density descriptors. The sizes attribute tells the browser how wide the image will render at different viewport conditions. The browser chooses a candidate using those hints, the viewport, and device pixel ratio. Copy the largest suitable candidate from the inspected markup when you need more resolution, then open that URL in a new tab and save it.

Inspect a picture element

A <picture> can contain several <source> elements, each with a media or type condition, followed by an <img> fallback. The visible file may therefore be a WebP or AVIF source even though the fallback references JPEG. Review every source srcset before choosing a download.

Account for lazy loading

Some pages place a placeholder in src and keep the real URL in a data attribute until the image enters the viewport. Scroll the image into view, wait for it to load, and inspect the element again. If no URL appears, use DevTools’ resource list while the image is being requested.

Extract CSS background images

Decorative images often are not <img> elements. In DevTools, select the element, open the Styles or Computed pane, and search for background-image or url(. Copy the URL inside the declaration, resolve relative paths against the stylesheet or document as appropriate, and open it directly.

Backgrounds can be layered, swapped by media queries, or generated by a pseudo-element such as ::before. Check the active rule at your current viewport and inspect pseudo-elements when the visible artwork is not on the selected node. A CSS URL may point to an SVG, sprite, font, or data URI rather than a standalone raster image; save or decode it according to its actual format.

Use Chrome DevTools to locate loaded image requests

  1. Open DevTools with More > More Tools > Developer Tools (or the browser’s equivalent shortcut).
  2. Select the Network panel.
  3. Reload the page so requests are recorded from the start.
  4. Use the resource-type filter and select Img, or type an image extension or part of the URL in the filter box.
  5. Trigger lazy loading, a carousel slide, modal, or other interaction that reveals the desired image.
  6. Select a request and review its Headers, Preview, and Response tabs. Use the request URL to open the asset directly.

Chrome’s DevTools documentation describes both Network and Sources as places to browse page resources, including images. Network is usually better for files fetched after interaction; Sources is useful for exploring the resource tree and loaded files.

Preserve the request context

A direct URL may work only with the original page’s cookies, referrer, authorization, or user-agent. If opening it separately returns a 403, a login page, or an empty response, the server is enforcing access controls. Do not attempt to bypass those controls; use an authorized session and follow the site’s terms.

Retrieve linked assets with GNU Wget

GNU Wget can recursively retrieve resources referenced in HTML and CSS, including markup src values and CSS url() values. A basic starting command is:

wget --recursive --level=1 --page-requisites --convert-links https://example.com/page

This is a retrieval workflow, not a promise that every image will be found. JavaScript-created URLs, images returned only after an API call, login-protected resources, robots or server policies, and client-side transformations can prevent a recursive downloader from seeing the final asset. Review the downloaded directory and confirm the files and dimensions you actually need. Wget’s exact flags and behavior vary by version; consult the manual installed with your version before using it in automation.

Download the right rendition and format

Resolution

Record the pixel dimensions rather than relying on a filename such as large or original. Responsive candidates can differ substantially, and an image displayed at 800 CSS pixels may have a 1600-pixel density candidate available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Format and transparency

WebP and AVIF may be smaller than JPEG or PNG but require compatible software. PNG commonly preserves transparency; JPEG does not. If a page uses a modern format and you need an editable or widely supported file, convert a copy after downloading rather than assuming that changing the extension converts the data.

Query parameters and signed URLs

Image services often encode width, quality, format, or an expiration signature in the query string. Keep the complete URL while downloading. Removing parameters can produce a thumbnail, an error, or an unauthorized response.

Common problems and fixes

“Save Image As” is missing

You may have right-clicked a container, an overlay, or a canvas rather than an image. Use Inspect, select the underlying element, and check Network requests. A canvas has no ordinary image URL; you may need the page’s own export control or an authorized capture of the rendered result.

The saved file is a tiny placeholder

The page may use lazy loading or a low-resolution placeholder. Scroll the image into view, wait for it to finish, then inspect srcset, picture, and Network requests for the full candidate.

The downloaded file is HTML

Open the response headers and file contents. A login page, bot check, 404 document, or access-denied response can be saved with an image-looking filename. Reuse the authenticated browser session through the site’s supported workflow instead of trying to defeat the check.

The URL works in the page but not in a new tab

The request may depend on cookies, a referrer, an authorization header, or a short-lived signature. Use DevTools to compare request headers and ask the site owner for an approved download path.

Wget misses images

Wget follows references it can parse in HTML and CSS. It does not automatically reproduce every JavaScript interaction or authenticated API call. Use DevTools to identify the final requests, then retrieve them only with authorization.

Copyright, licensing, and hotlinking

Finding or downloading a file does not grant permission to republish it. Check the license and the particular site’s terms before using an image in a product, article, advertisement, or dataset. MDN’s HTML images guidance states: “Never point the src attribute at an image hosted on someone else’s website without permission.” That warning addresses hotlinking—embedding another party’s hosted file and consuming its bandwidth—not every question of copyright or downloading. Keep a record of the license, attribution requirements, and any restrictions.

Operational checklist

  • Start with Save Image As for one visible image.
  • Inspect srcset, sizes, and picture when resolution or format matters.
  • Check CSS backgrounds and pseudo-elements for decorative artwork.
  • Use Network or Sources to find resources loaded after scrolling or interaction.
  • Keep complete URLs, including query parameters and signatures.
  • Verify file type, dimensions, and transparency after download.
  • Confirm licensing and avoid unauthorized hotlinking or access-control bypasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extract an image without downloading the entire web page?

Yes. Save the visible image directly, copy its inspected source URL, or select its individual Network request. A full-page save is only needed when you want an offline page copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the image URL different from the one I see in the address bar?

The page URL identifies the document. The image is a separate resource, often selected from srcset, picture sources, CSS, or a script-generated request.

Does extracting an image mean I can use it commercially?

No. Technical access and reuse permission are separate. Check the image’s license and the site’s terms before republishing or embedding it.
