To export selected pages, open the PDF in an editor that supports page extraction, select the page thumbnails or enter page ranges, choose Extract pages, and save the resulting PDF as a separate file. Adobe Acrobat desktop, Acrobat on the web, and PDFsam Basic all support this workflow, but they differ in storage, privacy, and output controls.
Choose the right extraction method

Choose a desktop option when the PDF contains confidential information or when you need the original to remain strictly local. Use Acrobat on the web when browser convenience matters and Adobe cloud storage is acceptable.
Before you extract: check permissions and plan the output
Confirm that extraction is allowed
In Acrobat desktop, open File > Document Properties > Security. Review the document restrictions before trying to extract pages. A PDF can open normally while still limiting editing or page operations.

Write down the pages you need
Use physical page numbers shown by the editor, not necessarily the printed numbers in the document footer. For example, a report may label its first page “i” while the PDF viewer calls it page 1. For a non-consecutive selection, list every page explicitly, such as 2, 5, 9, and 14. For a continuous section, use a range such as 20–27.

Decide whether the source must remain unchanged
The safest default is a new PDF containing the extracted pages while leaving the source untouched. Acrobat also offers controls to delete extracted pages from the original or create one output file for each selected page. Those options change the result and should be selected only when that is your intent.
Export pages in Acrobat desktop
- Open the generated PDF in Acrobat.
- Choose All tools > Organize pages.
- Select the required page thumbnails. For non-consecutive pages, click one page, then hold Ctrl on Windows or Cmd on Mac while selecting additional pages. You can also enter page numbers in the selection field when that control is available.
- Choose Extract pages.
- In the extraction dialog, leave the optional boxes unchecked if you want one new PDF and want to preserve the original. Select the option to delete pages from the source only if you intentionally want to modify that file. Select the option to create separate files when each page should become its own PDF.
- Choose Extract.
- Save the new document with a descriptive name, such as contract-pages-2-5-9.pdf.
Acrobat warns that bookmarks or article threads associated with pages are not extracted. If navigation links or reading-order features matter, inspect the exported file rather than assuming they survived the operation.
Use Acrobat on the web
- Open the Acrobat web homepage.
- Choose Edit > Extract pages.
- Select the PDF from your device and mark the desired page thumbnails.
- Choose Extract.
Adobe says the extracted PDF is automatically saved to Adobe cloud storage. That is convenient for access across devices, but it is a material privacy difference from a local desktop workflow. Do not upload a sensitive generated PDF unless your organization permits that storage arrangement.

- Open PDFsam Basic and add the PDF.
- Enter the pages or ranges in its page-selection field. A value such as
2,5-7,12-means page 2, pages 5 through 7, and page 12 through the end. - Choose whether to create one combined output or one file for each range when that option is offered.
- Choose the destination folder and run the extraction.
- Open the output and verify the selected pages.
Range syntax is especially useful for long generated reports because it avoids clicking dozens of thumbnails. If your PDFsam build presents slightly different labels, the relevant functions are the page-range field, output destination, and split-per-range setting.
How to handle consecutive and non-consecutive pages
One continuous section
For pages 30 through 42, select the range 30–42. A range is preferable to selecting each thumbnail individually because it reduces accidental omissions.
Several individual pages
For pages 2, 5, 9, and 14, multi-select the thumbnails in Acrobat or enter a comma-separated list where supported. Keep the list in the order you want the pages to appear; some tools preserve document order automatically, while others follow the selection order.

One PDF per selected page or range
Acrobat can create separate files for each selected page, and PDFsam Basic can create one file for each range. Use this only when downstream recipients or an automated workflow requires multiple files; otherwise a single combined PDF is easier to name, share, and archive.
Verify the exported PDF
- Page count: compare the output count with your selection. A selection of 2, 5, and 9 should produce three pages.
- First and last pages: open both and confirm they are the intended documents or sections.
- Non-consecutive pages: check every selected page, not only the first and last.
- Visual content: inspect charts, scanned pages, signatures, and images for clipping or unexpected blank pages.
- Navigation: test bookmarks and article-thread behavior if the source used them, because Adobe says those items are not extracted.
- Filename and location: confirm the output was saved where your workflow expects it and does not overwrite the source.
Troubleshooting common extraction problems
“Extract pages” is unavailable
Check File > Document Properties > Security for restrictions. If the PDF is protected, you may need the owner’s permission or an authorized, unrestricted copy. Do not attempt to bypass a restriction you are not entitled to remove.
The wrong pages were exported
Distinguish viewer page numbers from printed labels, then reopen the source and select by thumbnail position. For non-consecutive pages, verify each thumbnail before confirming extraction.

Generated PDFs can contain intentionally blank separator pages. Compare the output thumbnails with the source and remove a page only after confirming it was not part of the required section.

Bookmarks or article navigation disappeared
This is an expected limitation noted in Acrobat’s documentation: bookmarks or article threads associated with pages are not extracted. Preserve the original for navigation, or recreate the required bookmarks in the new file.
The browser workflow raises a privacy concern
Use Acrobat desktop or PDFsam Basic instead. Acrobat web saves the extracted file to Adobe cloud storage, whereas PDFsam Basic processes locally.
PDFsam does not accept the range
Check the syntax carefully: use commas between individual pages and hyphens for ranges, such as 2,5-7,12-. Remove spaces or unsupported characters if the field rejects the entry, then confirm the page count before running the job.
The source was changed accidentally
Restore the original from your backup or reopen the untouched source copy. In Acrobat, the default extraction settings create a new document; leave deletion options unchecked when preservation matters.

Performance, reliability, and privacy considerations
For a few pages, thumbnail selection is usually simplest. For repeated or large selections, explicit ranges reduce selection errors and make the operation reproducible. Local tools avoid uploading documents, while browser extraction trades that privacy advantage for convenience and cloud access.
Keep the original file until the exported PDF has passed your checks. Extraction is a structural operation, not a guarantee that every document-level feature will transfer. Treat the exported file as a new artifact with its own filename, permissions, and retention policy.

When extraction is the wrong operation
If you need to edit text, remove confidential information, rotate pages, or repair a damaged file, page extraction alone is insufficient. Create the selected PDF first, then use an authorized editing or redaction workflow and verify that the resulting file meets your document-retention requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export pages from a PDF that was generated by a website or script?
Yes. Once the file is a valid PDF, extraction is based on its page structure rather than how it was created. Restrictions or corruption can still prevent the operation.
Will extracting pages reduce the quality of images?
The cited workflows describe page selection and output creation, not a guaranteed image-quality policy. Open the exported file and inspect high-resolution images or scans before distributing it.
