You can export Messenger messages through Meta’s Accounts Center. For end-to-end encrypted chats, use Messenger’s separate secure-storage download instead. The first method is the right starting point for most people who want a browsable archive; the second is needed for encrypted chat history when secure storage is enabled.
These exports include only information available to the selected account and within the options you choose. They are not a guaranteed way to retrieve deleted messages or every conversation ever sent.
Export messages through Accounts Center
For a general Messenger archive, request a Facebook information export to your device. Meta’s current documented path is in Accounts Center, although menu wording can vary by device, region, or interface version.

- Open Accounts Center, then select Your information and permissions.
- Select Export your information, then Create export.
- Choose the Facebook profile whose information you want to export.
- Select Export to device.
- Choose the information category that includes messages. If you want only a particular period, set a custom date range; otherwise choose the broadest available range.
- Choose a format, notification email, and media quality, then start the export.
Meta prepares the archive before it is ready. You’ll receive a notification and email when it can be downloaded. The export is delivered as a ZIP file; Meta currently says a prepared download is available for four days. You may need to re-enter your password or complete a security check. If it expires, request another export. See Meta’s export instructions.

Choose HTML or JSON
| Format | Choose it when | What to expect |

| HTML | You want to read or browse your messages | Opens in a web browser and is the easiest option for most people. |
| JSON | You want to process, filter, or analyze the data with software | Contains structured records rather than a polished chat transcript; a JSON viewer or technical tools may be needed. |
If you are unsure, choose HTML. If you need both a readable archive and structured data, make separate requests where available.
Download end-to-end encrypted chats separately
Do not assume the ordinary Accounts Center export is a substitute for Messenger’s encrypted-chat download. Meta documents a separate download for end-to-end encrypted conversations, and the documented process is on a computer. It requires that secure storage is enabled and that you can authenticate with your Messenger PIN or a supported one-time code.

- On a computer, open Messenger.com.
- Click your profile photo and choose Privacy & safety.
- Open End-to-end encrypted chats, then Message storage.
- Under Manage secure storage, select Download secure storage data.
- Enter your Messenger PIN or use the offered one-time code, then choose Download file.
- Enter your Facebook password if prompted and confirm the download.
Meta says this download can include encrypted messages and attachments such as images, files, and other media. Facebook.com also has a documented route to the same secure-storage controls. See Meta’s Messenger secure-storage instructions and its Facebook.com instructions. If you forgot the PIN, use the recovery option shown in the secure-storage flow; the PIN or one-time code is distinct from your Facebook password.

Open the downloaded archive
For the standard export, extract the ZIP file using your device’s built-in archive utility or another trusted ZIP tool.

- HTML: Open the extracted folder and launch the
indexHTML file in a browser. Navigate to the messages or conversations section. Browser search can help locate text in a page, though it may not search every conversation at once. - JSON: Find the message-related JSON files and open them in a text editor, JSON viewer, or data-processing tool. The data is structured for software, not formatted as an easy-to-read transcript.
Keep the original ZIP unchanged if you need to preserve the downloaded archive. Store it somewhere private: it may contain sensitive conversations and other account information depending on the categories you selected.
What can the export contain?
The standard export can include messages and conversation information for the selected profile, date range, and categories. Depending on your selections and available data, it may also include media or other Facebook account information. Media quality, date range, and selected categories affect the archive’s size. Higher media quality can make it much larger.

Neither route promises a complete record of everything ever sent. Deleted content may no longer be available, and retention varies by type of information. Meta notes that another participant may still have their own copy of a message even when it is no longer available from your account. See Meta’s information-retention guidance.

Phone or computer?
You can look for the general Accounts Center export in Facebook settings on a phone or in a browser. Meta also has a separate Messenger feature called “Download a copy of your information” documented for Android and iPhone, not computers; it is not the same feature as the broad Accounts Center export. For end-to-end encrypted secure-storage data, Meta currently documents the download process on a computer. See Meta’s device-availability note.

If messages are missing or the export is unavailable
- Check the profile and scope: Confirm you selected the right Facebook profile, included the messages category, and chose a date range that covers the conversation.
- Check encrypted chats: If the missing conversation is end-to-end encrypted, try the separate secure-storage download, provided secure storage is enabled and you can authenticate.
- Allow for preparation: The general export is prepared asynchronously. Check Facebook notifications, email, and the export tool’s available downloads.
- Look in Accounts Center: If you cannot find an older “Download Your Information” control, open Facebook settings and go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information. A desktop browser may expose controls that are hard to find in an app.
- Reduce a very large export: Request messages only, narrow the date range, lower media quality, or split the archive into separate periods. These choices can reduce file size.
- For an expired download: Request a new export; Meta currently gives prepared standard exports a four-day download window.
- For deleted messages: A fresh export is not a recovery guarantee. Deleted information may no longer be retained in data available for download.
- For a deactivated or deletion-pending profile: The export controls or available data may be affected. Check Meta’s Accounts Center information and account settings.
Privacy, legal records, and third-party tools
The official tools export data for the authenticated account holder; they are not a legitimate way to obtain another person’s private account data. You may have a copy of a conversation exchanged with someone, but that does not give you access to their account or their full message history.
If you need a record for a legal matter, an export may help preserve account data, but an HTML or JSON file is not automatically admissible evidence. Keep the original ZIP, note when and how it was downloaded, store an unmodified copy securely, and ask a lawyer about authentication and record-handling requirements for your situation.
Avoid browser extensions or recovery services that ask for your Facebook password or broad access to your account. They can expose private messages or credentials, and they cannot reliably bypass Meta’s retention, authentication, or encryption limits. Meta’s official export tools are the safer option for ordinary archiving.
