The most portable way to move bookmarks is to export them as an HTML file, copy that file to the destination computer, and import it into the new browser. HTML normally preserves bookmark titles, URLs, and folder hierarchy, but not passwords, history, extensions, cookies, or open tabs.

Before you start

  • Use the desktop version of each browser where possible; mobile menus and capabilities vary.
  • Check the active profile before exporting. Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and other Chromium browsers can keep separate bookmark collections per profile.
  • If the destination already has important bookmarks, export it first. This makes a merge reversible.
  • Keep the export on local or encrypted storage, and do not upload it to an unknown converter.

Export, import, sync and backup: what is the difference?

  • Export creates a portable file, usually HTML.
  • Import adds bookmarks from a file or another installed browser.
  • Sync keeps a browser account’s bookmarks updated across signed-in devices.
  • Backup is a restorable snapshot. Sync is not a substitute: an unwanted deletion can synchronize too.

The universal HTML method

For a cross-browser move, use HTML. It is supported by most major desktop browsers and generally carries names, URLs, and nested folders. It may not carry favicons, tags, separators, reading-list status, custom sorting, or other browser-specific metadata. Keep the original file unchanged until you have checked the import; a name such as bookmarks_2026-09-28.html is easier to identify than a generic filename.

Chrome

Export

  1. Open the correct Chrome profile.
  2. Select More (three dots) > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager.
  3. In Bookmark Manager, select More and choose Export Bookmarks.
  4. Save the generated HTML file.

Chrome documents this HTML file as the transfer format: Google Chrome Help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Import

  1. Choose More > Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings.
  2. Select Choose file, open the HTML file, then select Open and Done.

Imported items may be in Other bookmarks, a new imported folder, or the bookmarks bar, depending on the profile’s existing layout.

Firefox

Export to HTML

  1. Open the Firefox menu and choose Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
  2. In the Library window, select Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML….
  3. Save the file (Firefox uses bookmarks.html by default).

Mozilla says HTML is for transferring bookmarks to another browser or computer: Mozilla Support.

Do not confuse export with backup: Export Bookmarks to HTML is the cross-browser option. Backup creates a Firefox-specific JSON/JSONLZ4 file intended mainly to restore Firefox and should not be assumed to work in Chrome, Edge, Safari, Brave, or Opera.

Import

Use Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup, then choose the HTML-file import option. Firefox also provides an import wizard for supported installed browsers such as Chrome, Safari, and Edge; if a browser is not listed, export its bookmarks to HTML first. See Firefox bookmark features and Mozilla’s import guide.

Microsoft Edge

Export

  1. Open Favorites.
  2. Select More options and choose Export favorites.
  3. Save the HTML file.

Menu labels can change; search Edge Settings for export favorites if necessary.

  1. Choose File > Export Browsing Data to File.
  2. Select the data, choose a Safari profile or All Profiles, then select Download.
  3. Name and save the resulting .zip file.

Apple says this export is not encrypted. Store it securely and delete it after a successful migration: Apple’s Safari guide.

Older Safari versions

Older macOS/Safari releases use File > Export > Bookmarks, producing Safari Bookmarks.html. Use the menu visible in your version rather than assuming this legacy path is universal.

Brave

Export and import

  1. For export, choose Bookmarks > Bookmarks Manager, open the upper-right More-options menu, choose Export, and save the HTML file.
  2. For direct import, choose Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks and Settings and select a detected browser.
  3. For an undetected source, choose the HTML-file option and open the exported file.

On macOS, Brave notes that importing Safari data may require Full Disk Access. An HTML file avoids direct Safari-database access. See Brave Help.

Opera

Opera and Opera GX support HTML bookmark import and export through the Bookmarks manager. Open that manager and use its import/export controls; labels can differ by edition. Opera also offers account-based synchronization. See Opera’s feature guide.

Browser-to-browser recipes

Source Destination Recommended method
Chrome Firefox Chrome HTML export, Firefox HTML import
Firefox Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera Firefox HTML export, destination HTML import
Edge Chrome, Firefox or Safari Edge HTML export, destination import
Safari Chrome, Firefox or Edge Use the Safari export available in that version, then import; older Safari may create HTML
Brave or Opera Most major desktop browsers HTML export and import

Merge bookmarks without losing anything

  1. Export the destination browser first.
  2. Import the source into the destination without deleting existing bookmarks.
  3. Leave the imported folder intact while checking it.
  4. Remove duplicates and reorganize only after verification.
  5. Keep both exports until cleanup is complete.

Major browsers generally add imported items rather than replace the collection. Chrome may use Other bookmarks; Edge may use Imported; Safari places imported bookmarks after existing ones.

If imported bookmarks seem missing

  • Check Other bookmarks, Imported, or Imported favorites.
  • Open the full Bookmark or Favorites Manager and check whether the bookmarks bar is hidden.
  • Confirm the active profile.
  • Reopen the manager or restart the browser.
  • Re-export the source and import the new local copy.
  • Try a clean profile to isolate profile or sync conflicts.

If the HTML file is rejected

  • Re-export it; confirm it is a bookmark export, not a web page saved as HTML.
  • Use a local file rather than a cloud-placeholder file.
  • Start the import from the destination’s dedicated bookmark-import control.
  • Do not manually edit the HTML unless you understand that malformed markup can damage folder structure.

What does not transfer with a bookmark export?

Data Normal HTML bookmark export What to do instead
Passwords No Use the browser’s separate password migration or a password manager. CSV exports may be readable text.
History No Use browser-specific data import, if offered.
Extensions No Reinstall them in the destination browser.
Cookies and sessions No Sign in again; use supported profile migration only when appropriate.
Open tabs No Save tabs as bookmarks or use a browser-specific tab-sync feature.
Reading lists and settings Usually no Use the browser’s separate import categories.

Microsoft documents password import separately from favorites, and Safari treats passwords as a separate browsing-data category: Microsoft Support.

Export versus sync

Method Best for Trade-off
HTML export/import Switching browsers, computers, or accounts; offline snapshots Usually bookmarks only; duplicates require cleanup
Browser sync Keeping one browser current across signed-in devices Account-dependent and can propagate unwanted deletions
Browser-specific backup Restoring the same browser Often preserves more native structure but is not portable

For Safari, iCloud sync requires the same Apple Account with Safari enabled. Apple also provides recovery for recently deleted bookmarks for up to 30 days under applicable account and sync conditions: Apple Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer bookmarks without signing in?

Yes. Exporting to an HTML file and importing it locally does not require a browser account.

Will importing overwrite my existing bookmarks?

Major desktop browsers generally add imported bookmarks, often in an imported folder, but export the destination first so the operation is reversible.

Can I move bookmarks between Windows and Mac?

Yes. An HTML bookmark file is platform-independent for supported desktop browsers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are my folders in a different place?

Browsers map toolbar, favorites, and profile-specific folders differently. Names and hierarchy usually transfer, but placement and metadata can change.

Is an HTML bookmark file safe to share?

Treat it as private. It reveals the websites you saved; never upload it to an untrusted service.
