To export an AngularJS modal, convert the live, visible DOM element after AngularJS has rendered its bindings—not the template file. A practical browser-side option is html2pdf.js: select the modal body, configure its page and canvas settings, then call html2pdf().set(options).from(element).save(). This approach is convenient for ordinary dialogs, but it can differ from the on-screen rendering, fail on cross-origin images, and struggle with very large canvases.
What you need before exporting
AngularJS turns templates and model values into live browser DOM. The PDF must be generated from that rendered DOM so it includes the actual values and content the user sees. AngularJS guidance places DOM manipulation in directives; for an existing application, a controller-triggered export can still be a pragmatic integration, provided it runs after the dialog is visible and its bindings have rendered.
This example uses html2pdf.js, which uses html2canvas and jsPDF to convert an element or webpage in the browser. Install and load the project version documented by its maintainers, then pin that version in your application. Do not assume a script copied from an old tutorial is current or compatible with your legacy dependency set.

<button type="button" ng-click="exportModalPdf()">

</button>
Place the button where it remains usable without being included in the selected element. If the modal data loads asynchronously, disable the export action or otherwise wait until the data is ready; starting the conversion before rendering finishes can capture incomplete content.
Export the visible modal with html2pdf.js
With the library loaded on the page, add an export function to the scope that owns the button. The following uses the options documented by html2pdf.js for filename, margins, image quality, canvas rendering, PDF page format, and page breaks. html2pdf.js documentation and project describes the workflow and option categories.
$scope.exportModalPdf = function () {
var element = document.getElementById('invoice-modal-body');
if (!element) {
return;
}
var options = {
margin: 0.4,
filename: 'invoice.pdf',
image: { type: 'jpeg', quality: 0.95 },
html2canvas: {
scale: 2,
useCORS: true,
windowWidth: element.scrollWidth,
windowHeight: element.scrollHeight
},
jsPDF: {
unit: 'in',
format: 'letter',
orientation: 'portrait'
},
pagebreak: { mode: ['css', 'legacy'] }
};
html2pdf().set(options).from(element).save();
};
Load the script before the AngularJS code that invokes it. Use the exact package or CDN installation instructions for the version you choose; avoid combining mismatched html2canvas or jsPDF versions unless that combination is explicitly supported.

AngularJS Material dialogs: capture during the dialog lifecycle
An AngularJS Material $mdDialog may compile its template or temporarily move an existing content element into the dialog and restore it when the dialog closes. Select the target while the dialog is open and visible. Do not query a hidden template before compilation, or retain a reference and attempt capture after the dialog has been torn down.

Connect the download action to the dialog’s scope or component and ensure the target selector refers to the content inside the active dialog instance. If dialogs can appear more than once, avoid duplicate IDs: use a dialog-local reference, a unique ID, or a selector scoped to the active dialog. The essential ordering is: open dialog, let AngularJS render the bindings and any data, then run the export.
Make the PDF paginate and resemble the dialog
html2pdf.js is useful when a browser-side export of ordinary HTML is sufficient. It is not a print engine that reproduces every browser pixel. html2canvas rebuilds an image from DOM information rather than taking a literal screenshot; its documentation warns that the result may not be fully accurate to the actual page because unsupported CSS is omitted. See the html2canvas documentation for that rendering limitation.
Use export-specific styling
Modal layouts often rely on fixed heights, scrolling containers, shadows, animations, or controls that make sense on screen but not on paper. Add a class to the export root and use print/export CSS to remove unnecessary effects, set readable colors, and ensure content flows rather than remaining constrained to a small scroll box. Simplify styles that html2canvas does not render as expected, then inspect computed styles and compare the resulting PDF.
Choose page breaks intentionally
For tables, invoices, and other structured content, avoid splitting important rows or headings where possible. CSS page-break rules supported by html2pdf.js can guide pagination:

.pdf-export .keep-together {
break-inside: avoid;
page-break-inside: avoid;
}
.pdf-export .new-page {
break-before: page;
page-break-before: always;
}
Apply these classes to the export DOM and keep pagebreak.mode configured to process CSS rules. Browser and library behavior can still vary, so inspect documents with multiple pages and adjust the markup if a heading is stranded or a row breaks awkwardly.
Balance sharpness against canvas size
The example uses scale 2 to produce a sharper rendering than a low-resolution canvas, but scale is not a free quality upgrade: it expands the canvas and memory demand. Extremely tall or wide content can exceed browser canvas limits and result in partial or blank output. The html2canvas FAQ discusses these limits and recommends taking the element’s dimensions into account; see the html2canvas FAQ. For very long dialogs, reduce scale, split the export into sections, or use a server-side document-generation design rather than trying to rasterize one enormous element.
Cross-origin images, privacy, and execution trade-offs
External resources need permission
An image served from another origin can taint or block canvas capture unless that server supplies suitable CORS headers, or you route the image through a proxy you control. useCORS: true does not bypass browser security policy. The html2canvas FAQ explains the cross-origin constraint and proxy option: html2canvas FAQ. Where practical, serve export images from the same origin or configure the image host to allow the requesting origin.

Client-side conversion keeps the content in the browser
In this workflow, html2pdf.js converts the DOM in the user’s browser. The rendered content remains client-side unless your own application sends it elsewhere. Avoid logging generated data URLs or PDF contents, and review any custom upload or analytics code surrounding the export if the modal contains sensitive information.

When browser-side export is not the right fit
The trade-off is convenience against fidelity and scale. Browser conversion avoids building a PDF service for straightforward dialogs, but it inherits canvas rendering limitations, CORS rules, device memory constraints, and the need to test the user’s browser. For exact print layout, complex CSS, very long documents, or centrally managed output, consider a server-side PDF process and validate its privacy and operational requirements. No numeric performance or browser-limit guarantee is published, so test representative content on the browsers and devices your application supports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting blank, clipped, or incomplete PDFs
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Blank PDF | The selector did not find the visible modal body, capture began before bindings or images were ready, or the canvas hit a size limit. | Confirm the element exists and is visible at export time; wait until data and images are ready; inspect the browser console; try a smaller scale or split a very large export. |
| External images missing | The image host does not send suitable CORS headers, or the resource is otherwise inaccessible to canvas rendering. | Use same-origin assets, configure CORS on the image server, or use a proxy you control. useCORS alone cannot override browser content policy. |
| PDF styling differs from the modal | html2canvas supports only a subset of CSS and reconstructs the DOM rather than capturing the browser’s exact pixels. | Simplify unsupported effects, inspect computed styles, and create export-specific CSS. |
| Bottom or side of content is clipped | The capture viewport reflects the visible box rather than the full scrollable dimensions, or the canvas is too large. | Set windowWidth and windowHeight from the target’s scroll dimensions, lower scale if needed, and test a long dialog in each target browser. |
| Unexpected page splits | Content is flowing across page boundaries without suitable break guidance. | Use CSS break rules such as break-before, break-after, or break-inside where supported, together with html2pdf.js page-break modes. |
| Export contains stale or missing values | The click happened before AngularJS finished updating the model or rendering asynchronous content. | Only enable export after the view is ready, then select the live element in the visible dialog. |
AngularJS maintenance and dependency risk
AngularJS support officially ended in January 2022, according to the AngularJS project. Treat PDF export in an AngularJS application as maintenance on a legacy stack: pin dependency versions, test upgrades in a controlled environment, and verify the output after changing AngularJS, html2pdf.js, html2canvas, or jsPDF. Keep the export narrowly scoped so replacing the UI framework later does not require rewriting unrelated PDF logic.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a webpage rather than a PDF generated from your AngularJS application’s rendered modal, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A server-side capture cannot automatically see a modal that exists only in a user’s browser session; the page must be reachable by the capture service and any required state must be supplied appropriately. For a public page, a single request looks like this (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. For modal-to-PDF export, use the DOM-based method above when the dialog is private or exists only in your app session; use ScreenshotNeo when a reachable webpage screenshot is what you need.
Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does html2pdf.js export the AngularJS template source?
No. It converts the rendered DOM element, so AngularJS bindings must have populated the visible dialog before capture.
Can this method export a modal that only exists in a user’s logged-in browser session?
Yes, the browser-side approach can capture the live element in that session. A remote screenshot service cannot automatically access that private browser state.
