To export a Figma design as a PNG, select the frame, layer, group, component, slice, or other content you want, add a PNG configuration in the right sidebar’s Export section, choose the size and any other settings, then click Export. In Figma in a browser, the file goes to your browser’s configured download location; in the desktop app, Figma prompts you to choose a file name and destination.
Export a selection as a PNG
- Select the content. Open the design and select the frame, layer, component, group, or section you want to export. You can also export a slice or, with nothing selected, the entire page canvas.
- Open Export. With edit access in Design Mode, look toward the bottom of the right sidebar. With view access, the section appears under Properties. In Dev Mode, select an object to see Export.
- Add an export configuration. In the Export section, click the plus button, choose PNG, and set the scale or dimensions you need. You can add more than one configuration to a selection.
- Check the output if useful. With one selection active, you can preview the export. Figma does not display Preview when multiple objects are selected.
- Export the file. Click Export. In the browser, check the browser’s configured download location. In the desktop app, enter a file name and choose a destination when prompted.
Figma’s Export from Figma Design guide describes export as a way to share designs, move content between tools, or save copies outside Figma.
Choose what appears in the PNG
Export one object or a group
Exporting a selected frame or object is usually the most direct way to get a neatly bounded image of that design. If you select several items, Figma can export them together; the resulting content depends on what you selected and the export settings. When only selected layers should appear, leave Ignore overlapping layers enabled. Figma enables it by default. If you disable it, intersecting or overlapping layers can be included in the export.
Export a custom canvas region with a slice
Use the Slice tool under Region tools when you need a specific rectangular area rather than the bounds of an existing frame or layer. Draw the slice over the canvas, adjust its bounds, then add an export configuration to the slice as you would to another object. Only content within the slice bounds is exported, so a slice can also give you controlled padding around the design.

Be aware that slice overlap behavior depends on whether the slice is inside a frame or group and on the Ignore overlapping layers setting. If something unexpectedly appears or is missing near a slice boundary, check both the slice’s position in the layer structure and that setting. Figma covers these behaviors in its export formats and settings guide.
Export the page canvas
To export the entire page canvas, deselect everything before adding or using the export configuration. This differs from exporting the current selection: a leftover selected frame or layer can limit what you export.

Set PNG size and quality-related options
Use a scale multiplier or fixed dimensions
In the export configuration, you can use a multiplier such as 2x, or set a fixed width or height with w or h (for example, 800w). Pick the output dimensions for the place the image will be used, then check the resulting pixel size before exporting. A larger multiplier or dimension creates a larger image; it does not make a small or low-resolution source contain new detail.
Figma says image exports default to 72 DPI, with examples of 144 DPI at 2x and 216 DPI at 3x. These figures describe Figma’s export scaling convention and metadata, not a universal recommendation for how large every PNG should be. Use the dimensions required by the destination rather than increasing scale automatically. More detail on these settings is in Figma’s static export settings documentation.

Choose a color profile and filename suffix
Figma’s export options include the file’s existing color profile, sRGB, and Display P3. By default, Figma uses the file’s color profile. Choose a different profile only when it matches the intended workflow or destination. You can also set an optional suffix; Figma appends it to the exported filename, which is useful for distinguishing variants such as different sizes or themes.
Adjust resampling only when resizing matters
When resizing a PNG, Figma offers two image resampling methods in Advanced export settings:

- Detailed uses bicubic sampling and is the default. Figma describes it as suitable for detail such as high-quality images, vector art, gradients, or shadows.
- Basic uses nearest-neighbor sampling. It can suit hard edges, icons, logos, low-resolution images, and pixel art.
If resizing changes the appearance of the design, compare these methods in the exported output. The best choice depends on the content: a setting that preserves crisp pixel edges may not suit a gradient or photograph.

PNG is a raster format with lossless compression and transparency support. Figma supports 32-bit PNGs using RGBA; its documentation says PNGs cannot be exported without an alpha value. That makes PNG a practical choice for logos, charts, illustrations, and designs combining text and images when transparent areas or lossless output matter. PNGs are generally larger than JPG exports.

Export several configured assets at once
For a batch export, use Figma’s export modal rather than opening each selection and exporting it separately:
- On Mac, choose File > Export or press
Shift+Command+E. On Windows, choose File > Export or pressShift+Ctrl+E. - Review the current page’s selections that have export configurations. The modal lists information such as scale, format, dimensions, and file name.
- Uncheck any entries you want to skip, then export the remaining items.
The modal works from configurations already attached to selections on the current page; it is not a substitute for adding the right PNG settings first. The steps and shortcut are documented in Figma’s export guide.
Access and missing Export controls
View access can be enough to export assets: Figma says anyone with can view access can export them if the file owner has not restricted copying and sharing. Anyone with can edit access can use the Slice tool. If you cannot find Export, refresh the file once and check whether the owner has restricted copying or sharing. Where the control appears also depends on the mode and access level: in Design Mode, it is in the right sidebar; with view access, it is under Properties; in Dev Mode, select an object to expose it.

Troubleshoot common export problems
- Export is missing: Refresh once, confirm a selection is active when using Dev Mode, and check the file owner’s copying and sharing restrictions. View access does not guarantee export if the owner has restricted it.
- The wrong area was exported: Confirm which object is selected. To export the whole page canvas, deselect everything. For a precisely bounded region, create and configure a slice.
- Overlapping content is missing or unexpected: Check whether Ignore overlapping layers is enabled, and whether the slice is inside a frame or group. Its behavior depends on both the setting and that context.
- The PNG is too small or too large: Review the scale multiplier or fixed
w/hvalue in the configuration and choose dimensions for the intended use. - The resized image looks different: In Advanced export settings, compare Detailed and Basic resampling against the kind of content being resized.
- You cannot find the downloaded file: Browser exports go to the browser’s configured download location. Desktop exports ask for a destination during export.
- Preview is unavailable: Preview is not shown when multiple objects are selected. Try a single selection if you need to preview before export.
