To expand a webpage so it uses nearly the entire display, turn on your browser’s full-screen mode. In Firefox, open the menu (☰) and choose Full Screen; on many keyboards, F11 toggles the mode, while compact keyboards may require Fn+F11. Firefox on Mac documents Command+Shift+F. To return, move the pointer to the top of the screen and choose the exit-full-screen control, or use the same toggle shortcut. See Mozilla’s current instructions at Use Firefox in Full Screen mode.
What “full screen” can mean
People use “full screen” for two different actions:
- Browser full-screen mode: hides browser tabs, address bars and other controls, giving the current page more room.
- Element full-screen mode: a website asks the browser to enlarge one element, such as a video, game canvas or presentation. This uses the web Fullscreen API.
For ordinary browsing, start with the browser’s own menu or shortcut. If only a video or embedded app should fill the display, use that site’s full-screen button. The two modes are related but are not interchangeable.
How to make a webpage full screen in Firefox
Use the Firefox menu
- Open the webpage.
- Click the ☰ menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Full Screen (the control may appear as an icon with outward-pointing arrows).
- The tabs, address bar and other browser chrome disappear, leaving the page visible across the window.
Mozilla describes this mode as a way to “see more of the web and less of the browser.” The menu route is the safest choice when you do not know which keyboard layout or operating system is in use.

Use a keyboard shortcut
- Windows and many Linux keyboards: press F11.
- Compact keyboards: hold Fn while pressing F11 if the function row controls media or system features by default.
- macOS: Firefox documents Command+Shift+F.
Pressing the applicable toggle again normally restores the browser window. Shortcuts vary by browser, operating system and keyboard, so a non-working key combination is not evidence that full-screen mode is unavailable. Use the browser menu or its current help page instead.
How to exit full screen
Firefox browser mode
Move the pointer to the top edge of the display. Firefox reveals the toolbar; choose the exit-full-screen option. You can also press the same shortcut used to enter the mode (for example, F11 on many keyboards). If the pointer does not reveal controls, press the shortcut or open the operating system’s window controls.
A video or game’s full-screen mode
Move the pointer over the media and select its full-screen icon, usually a rectangle with corner arrows. Pressing Esc commonly exits a site-controlled full-screen view, although the exact behavior belongs to the site and browser.

Full screen on other browsers and devices
Chrome, Edge, Safari and mobile browsers provide their own commands, but the exact labels and key combinations depend on the browser version, operating system and device. Rather than applying Firefox’s shortcut universally, open that browser’s main menu and look for Full screen, Enter full screen or a similar display command. On phones and tablets, browser UI is already minimized and many browsers do not offer a desktop-style full-screen toggle; use the site’s own video or app control when available.
If a keyboard shortcut is intercepted by the operating system, a laptop’s function-lock setting or an accessibility utility, the menu command remains the practical fallback.
Browser full screen versus a website’s Fullscreen API
A page can request full screen for a selected element and its descendants with the browser’s Fullscreen API. MDN documents Element.requestFullscreen() for entering and Document.exitFullscreen() for leaving. The API is intended for an element—not necessarily the entire browser window—and browsers retain control over the user-visible permission and exit experience.

Minimal example for a page author
<button id="open">Open canvas full screen</button>
<button id="close">Exit full screen</button>
<canvas id="stage" width="1280" height="720"></canvas>
<script>
const stage = document.querySelector('#stage');
document.querySelector('#open').addEventListener('click', async () => {
try {
await stage.requestFullscreen();
} catch (error) {
console.error('Full-screen request failed:', error);
}
});
document.querySelector('#close').addEventListener('click', async () => {
if (document.fullscreenElement) await document.exitFullscreen();
});
document.addEventListener('fullscreenchange', () => {
console.log('Current full-screen element:', document.fullscreenElement);
});
</script>
The request must follow a transient user activation, such as a click or key press. Calling it automatically during page load, after an unrelated timer, or from a background task can be rejected. Handle the returned promise so the interface can report failure instead of assuming the request succeeded.
Permissions Policy and embedded content
Fullscreen access is controlled by the fullscreen Permissions Policy. MDN documents a default allowlist of self. If your page embeds third-party content in an iframe, the containing page may need to delegate permission with an appropriate iframe policy (and the embedded application must still request full screen). Without that delegation, the button can appear to do nothing or the promise can reject. See MDN’s Fullscreen API reference and Fullscreen API guide.

What changes while an element is full screen
- The selected element and its descendants are presented in the full-screen viewport.
- Your page can observe entry and exit through
fullscreenchange, and should update button labels or focus accordingly. - Failures can be reported through the promise rejection and
fullscreenerrorevent. - The user can leave with browser controls such as Esc; MDN also documents F11 as an exit option in API-mode guidance. Treat those as user escape routes, not as a universal browser shortcut.
Some mobile browsers may ignore viewport meta-tag settings and can block pinch-to-zoom while content is full screen. Design touch controls that remain usable at large sizes, and do not remove the user’s ability to leave.

Troubleshooting checklist
F11 does nothing
- Try Fn+F11 on a compact laptop keyboard.
- Use Firefox’s ☰ menu and select Full Screen.
- Check whether another application or an operating-system shortcut has claimed the key.
The toolbar will not reappear
Move the pointer to the very top edge, then wait briefly for Firefox’s toolbar. If it remains hidden, press the entry shortcut again. Switching applications and returning can also make the edge trigger easier to reach.
A video’s full-screen button is missing
The site may hide controls until playback starts, may use a custom player, or may be embedded with restrictive permissions. Start playback, move the pointer over the video and look for the expand icon. If it is inside an iframe, the host may need to allow full-screen.
The Fullscreen API promise rejects
- Call
requestFullscreen()directly from a user click or key handler. - Verify that the document is allowed to use the
fullscreenPermissions Policy. - Check the browser console and handle
fullscreenerror. - Confirm that the target element is still connected to the document and that the page is not blocked by another browser restriction.
Zoom is not the same as full screen
Browser zoom enlarges or shrinks page content while leaving browser controls visible. Full-screen mode changes the available browser viewport. Use zoom for readability and full screen for workspace; they can be used together, but they solve different problems.

If your goal is to capture a clean image of a webpage rather than interact with it, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not charged, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture and usage reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will full-screen make a webpage wider than my monitor?
No. It uses more of the existing display by hiding browser controls; it cannot create physical screen space beyond the monitor’s viewport.
Can a website force my browser into full screen?
A page’s Fullscreen API request requires a user gesture and is subject to browser permissions. Browsers also provide user-controlled exit actions.
Does full-screen disable browser zoom?
No. Zoom and full screen are separate settings, so zoom can remain active while browser controls are hidden.
