To establish a reliable guidance line, select the correct field and machine setup, set the distance between passes, then create a reference path that matches the direction you intend to work. For a straight field, that is usually an A–B line: mark Point A, drive steadily along the desired pass, mark Point B, and check the generated parallel tracks before beginning the operation. A line the display accepts is not necessarily a good line: implement width, offsets, receiver setup and field conditions all affect where the tool actually travels.

What a guidance line does

A guidance line is a virtual reference path for manual steering or automatic steering. The display uses it to generate parallel passes at a set distance from one another. The reference line is not the same thing as every track shown on the screen:

  • Reference line: The original A–B, heading, curve or other path used to lay out the pattern.
  • Guidance tracks: The subsequent paths generated from that reference.
  • Track spacing: The distance between successive passes. It may differ from the implement’s advertised or physical width.
  • Working width: The effective width actually covered, considering row spacing, active sections and the overlap you intend to leave.
  • Boundary: A mapped field edge, which can inform guidance but is not itself necessarily a suitable straight reference.

Guidance can help make passes more consistent and may reduce skips, overlap and operator fatigue. It cannot guarantee those outcomes: signal and correction quality, steering setup, implement geometry, soil and slope, speed, and operator decisions all matter.

Choose the right pattern

Field or job Pattern to consider Why
Long, mostly straight passes in a rectangular field Straight A–B Records the intended direction from a driven pass and generates parallel tracks.
Known compass or surveyed direction A+ heading Creates a straight reference from a heading, without needing to drive to Point B. In John Deere’s convention, 0° is north, 90° east, 180° south and 270° west.
You want the display to infer direction from travel Auto B Uses machine movement to calculate a heading. John Deere’s current simulator specifies at least 15 m (49.2 ft) of travel and calculates a best-fit heading from the last five data points.
Consistent curved passes, contours or terraces A–B curve or equivalent Builds parallel curved paths from a reference curve; names and behavior vary by system.
Irregular geometry, obstacles or changing contours Adaptive curve or equivalent Can guide from a recorded prior pass and adapt to changing geometry. Check the display’s pattern behavior before relying on it.
Center-pivot field Pivot or circle Creates concentric or circular guidance paths.
Perimeter work or mapped field edge Boundary-based guidance Uses a field boundary as a reference; boundary quality and shape matter.
Repeat paths from a previous operation AutoPath or equivalent recorded-operation guidance Can reuse recorded paths and may help keep traffic on established wheel tracks. John Deere notes that using source-operation paths can also create coverage overlap.

These are general choices, not interchangeable brand labels. Deere lists straight, A/B curve, adaptive curve, circle, boundary and AutoPath options; other displays use their own names and capabilities. See John Deere’s AutoTrac overview.

Before you create the line

  1. Select the right field. Check the client, farm and field hierarchy, not just the field name. A line saved to the wrong field can be difficult to find or reuse.
  2. Confirm the machine and implement configuration. Check antenna location and height, machine dimensions, hitch or drawbar position, implement width, lateral offset and any implement-guidance geometry. A tractor can follow a line while a trailing tool remains offset.
  3. Set the intended pass spacing. Use the distance you want between passes—not automatically the catalog width. Account for actual row spacing, active tool width, intentional overlap and section-control behavior.
  4. Check the positioning system. Confirm that the receiver is operating and the selected correction service is available. A saved line does not make positioning error disappear.
  5. Choose the working direction and pattern. Match existing rows, beds, surveyed lines or terrain where relevant. Identify waterways, terraces, obstacles, headlands and unsafe edges.
  6. Check for an existing line. Use a shared master line or known heading when appropriate rather than making a nearly identical new line by eye.

Manual parallel guidance and automatic steering are separate capabilities. Deere’s cited documentation requires a StarFire receiver for its guidance functions and identifies steering hardware or an appropriate steering system for AutoTrac. Requirements differ by machine and system; check the current documentation for your equipment. John Deere’s guidance requirements

Establish a straight A–B line

  1. Position on the intended first pass. Align the machine in the direction you want the rest of the field laid out. If working into existing rows, use their direction rather than an arbitrary field edge.
  2. Start the line at a stable point. Set Point A while travelling straight and under control—not during a turn, severe bounce or maneuver around an obstacle.
  3. Drive straight before setting Point B. Keep a steady heading over as long a clear distance as practical. A longer stable run gives you more opportunity to establish the intended direction; it is practical advice, not a guarantee of accuracy.
  4. Set Point B and finish the pattern. Deere’s A+B method requires more than 3 m (10 ft) of travel before B can be set. That is a minimum for that workflow, not a recommended target for every field.
  5. Save and identify the line. Use a name that distinguishes the field, direction or purpose. Avoid creating duplicates with vague names.
  6. Inspect the generated tracks. Confirm they run the intended way, have the intended spacing and make sense at the field edges and headlands.
  7. Test before committing. Check the first passes against rows or beds and watch the implement—not only the tractor. Correct a bad setup before planting, spraying or another operation where a misplaced pass is costly.

For Auto B, Deere specifies at least 15 m (49.2 ft) of travel and says it calculates a best-fit heading from the last five data points. For A+ heading, enter the intended heading carefully. On long passes even a small angular error can cause the line to diverge noticeably from the desired rows or surveyed direction. The exact controls vary by display. John Deere in-cab example

On the documented John Deere display workflow, the example path is Menu → Applications → AutoTrac Guidance → Set Track → New Track. Select the appropriate straight-track method, such as A+B, A+ Heading or Auto B, then verify track spacing. For A+B, select Set A, drive to the intended B location, select Set B and then Done. Name and save the line, inspect its generated tracks and select the one you intend to use.

The guidance application also provides controls for track selection, spacing, shifting, AutoTrac and diagnostics. Exact labels and sequence depend on display, software and configuration, so use the help for the installed display rather than assuming this path applies to every Deere machine. Create a line in Operations Center

A documented Operations Center workflow is to open Map, choose Setup, then Land, find the field, select Add → Track, and choose a straight or circle track. Enter the track spacing, name the track and place Points A and B on the map; where available, you can also specify a precise heading.

Ag Leader and Case IH examples

Ag Leader InCommand: A representative workflow begins on the Run screen with New Guidance Pattern. Set implement width in Pattern Options, then choose a supported pattern such as Straight, SmartPath, Pivot or Identical Curve. For a straight pattern, use the current or a manually entered heading, establish the reference and save the line group; use Load Pattern to recall it. Confirm the width and any line shift before operating. These pattern names describe distinct functions and are not universal equivalents of Deere’s pattern names.

Case IH AFS Connect: In a representative workflow, confirm the field and implement, open the swath or guidance controls, choose a type such as Heading, accept or enter a heading, apply it and verify the resulting lines and spacing. Confirm the exact steps in the operator manual for the display and software in your machine; menu paths and capabilities can change. Agriculture.com’s brand workflow examples

Set spacing for the implement, not the brochure

Track spacing is the distance between passes. Deere explicitly distinguishes it from working width. For example, a 30-ft planter might use 30-ft spacing if its row setup and configuration support that distance. A sprayer operator may choose narrower spacing for intentional overlap; a tillage tool may cover a different effective width than its frame suggests. Section control can switch sections on and off within a pass, but it does not repair a fundamentally wrong track spacing.

If the tractor is centered on the guidance track but the tool is not, check implement offset, hitch geometry and tool configuration. On slopes, side draft can pull an implement away from the tractor’s path even when tractor guidance is functioning properly. For implement guidance, Deere warns that an inaccurate center-of-rotation measurement can cause poor performance or damage. John Deere implement-steering setup guidance

Verify, name and reuse the line

  • Confirm the selected field and line name before starting.
  • Check that generated passes follow the intended rows, heading or contour.
  • Compare the displayed spacing with the planned effective working width.
  • Watch whether the implement follows the tractor, including on slopes.
  • Check headlands, point rows, waterways and field-edge behavior.
  • Leave and re-enter the field or reload the line, if practical, to confirm it was saved and assigned correctly.

Use a consistent naming convention for shared lines, such as field plus direction or use, and document whether a line is a farm master, an operation-specific line or an implement-specific setup. Keep track of who changed a shared line and why. Deere documents that a shift made by one operator on a shared line affects that operator until other users deselect and reselect the line. A shift can compensate for GPS drift, but an undocumented shift can make operators disagree about where the master track lies. John Deere track-list and shared-line help

When transferring lines across brands, do not assume that a successful file transfer preserves every property or produces the same path. Compatibility depends on display model, software, file format and pattern type. Validate heading, spacing, coordinates, field assignment, units, offsets and curve or pivot behavior before using an imported line for a high-value operation. Deere’s option to use Deere, BeeLine or Trimble calculation methods changes how newly created straight tracks are calculated; it does not import a competitor’s lines. Troubleshoot by symptom

AutoSteer will not engage

Check receiver signal and correction status, steering hardware or controller status, the guidance and AutoSteer controls, travel speed and direction, distance from the selected line, and any displayed engagement message or diagnostic. Confirm that required hardware and activation are present for your machine. Do not assume that manual guidance being available means automatic steering is enabled.

The machine wanders or oscillates around the line

First verify the line and receiver setup, then check antenna location and machine geometry, steering calibration, speed and steering sensitivity. Deere notes that excessive sensitivity can make the machine unstable, while insufficient sensitivity can cause wandering. Change settings in small steps and follow the machine’s guidance documentation rather than trying to compensate for a bad reference line with steering adjustments. John Deere line-sensitivity guidance

The tractor is on line but the implement is offset

Check the implement’s lateral offset, hitch or drawbar geometry, center-of-rotation measurements, and whether the tool is being pulled sideways by a slope or soil conditions. Confirm that the implement configuration matches the tool actually attached. Tractor position alone does not prove the tool is centered.

Passes overlap or leave skips

Check track spacing against actual working width, implement offset, section-control configuration, receiver and correction quality, and the guidance method used to create the line. Also check whether the implement is operating at its intended width. If the tractor tracks correctly while the tool does not, investigate implement geometry and draft rather than shifting the entire line immediately.

The line is wrong, missing or does not match another operator’s display

Confirm field assignment and saved name first. If the direction is wrong, recreate the reference from a correct pass or known heading rather than preserving a bad line. If a shared line has shifted, deselecting and reselecting may be necessary for another operator to see the shared state. For an imported line, validate the pattern and coordinates on the receiving display; visual similarity is not proof that its calculations match.

Limits and safe operation

Long lines can amplify small heading differences; Deere says its guidance-line preview accuracy degrades when a line exceeds 16 km (10 mi). Do not treat a screen preview or stored track as proof that the machine or implement will be correctly positioned in every part of the field.

Guidance and AutoSteer assist the operator; they do not replace supervision or control. Stay alert to people, obstacles, waterways, field edges, roads and overhead hazards, and be ready to steer or stop. Follow the machine and display manuals, particularly when setting up steering, making geometry changes or working near hazards.
