Open your browser’s menu and choose Full screen—you don’t need F11. On a Mac, Chrome and Edge use Control + Command + F; Firefox uses Command + Shift + F. On a Chromebook, press the dedicated Full screen key, usually marked with a rectangle icon.
Choose the method for your device

Menu labels and layouts can vary slightly by browser version. If a shortcut doesn’t work, use the menu method for your browser.
Chrome
Windows or Linux: Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner. In the Zoom row, select the Full screen icon at the right. It may appear as a four-corner icon rather than a text command. Chrome’s documented Windows and Linux keyboard toggle is F11; the menu is the alternative when you can’t use it. Google’s Chrome full-screen instructions show the menu control.
Mac: Press Control + Command + F. Chromebook: Press the dedicated Full screen key. See Chrome’s keyboard-shortcut reference for documented platform shortcuts.

Microsoft Edge
Windows: Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner, then choose Full screen. This switches the browser into full-screen mode rather than merely enlarging its window. Mac: Press Control + Command + F. Microsoft lists the Mac shortcut and Edge keyboard controls in its Edge keyboard-shortcut reference.
Firefox
Select the Firefox menu button, then choose Full Screen. On a Mac, use Command + Shift + F. Firefox documents these controls in its guide to making Firefox and websites go full screen and its keyboard-shortcut reference.

If you are willing to use the F11 command but your compact keyboard hides it behind a hardware key, Fn + F11 may send F11 instead of changing volume or brightness. That depends on the keyboard; using the menu avoids the issue altogether.
Browser full screen, video full screen, or maximize?
- Browser full screen hides the browser’s tabs, address bar, and toolbar so the page takes up more of the display.
- Video or webpage full screen enlarges only content such as a video, presentation, or game. Use the four-corner or diagonal-arrow control inside that content. A site may ask for permission, and the browser or an administrator may restrict the request.
- Maximize enlarges the browser window but usually leaves some browser or system controls visible. Use the window’s maximize button for this; it is not the same as full screen.
A video’s full-screen control is separate from the browser’s own full-screen command. The browser Fullscreen API lets web pages request full screen for their content, subject to browser behavior and restrictions. Chrome’s documentation on keyboard lock and web full-screen behavior describes that distinction.

Exit full screen or recover hidden controls
- Reveal the browser controls: Move the pointer to the top edge of the screen. In Firefox, the toolbar and tabs can reappear there; macOS may also reveal its menu bar at the top.
- Use the browser menu: Open the menu and select the full-screen control again, or select Exit Full Screen if shown. In Chrome, the full-screen icon beside Zoom toggles the mode.
- Try the browser’s toggle shortcut: On Windows or Linux, F11 is the common browser toggle; use Fn + F11 if your keyboard requires it. On Mac, use the browser-specific shortcut in the table above.
- If only a video or site is full screen: Press Esc or select the content’s full-screen button again. Esc may not exit browser-level full screen in every browser, so use the browser menu if it does not work.
If full screen does not work
- Nothing happens: Confirm that the browser window is active and that you are using the shortcut for that browser and operating system. Then try the menu; a shortcut could be claimed by the system or another app.
- The top-row key changes brightness or volume: Use the browser menu, or try Fn + F11 if you specifically want to send the F11 command.
- You cannot find the menu: Move the pointer to the top edge to reveal browser controls, then open the menu. If the browser is only maximized, look for the window’s restore-down button instead.
- A site refuses full screen: The site, browser settings, extensions, or a managed-device policy may block it. On managed Edge installations, an administrator can control full-screen availability with the FullscreenAllowed policy.
