Paste latitude, longitude into the Google Maps search box and submit. For example, 40.748817, -73.985428 puts a pin at that coordinate. Enter latitude first and longitude second; the same basic method works on a computer, Android, and iPhone or iPad.
Enter coordinates on a computer
- Open Google Maps in a browser.
- Click the search box and paste or type the latitude and longitude, such as
40.748817, -73.985428. - Press Enter. If Google shows a results panel, select the result to view the point on the map.
The pin marks the coordinate you entered. It may not identify a street address, entrance, trail access point, or property boundary.

Android
- Open Google Maps and tap the search field.

- Submit the search, then check the pin and its location details.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap the search box.

Google documents coordinate searches for Android and iPhone and iPad. The exact placement of details can vary by device, app version, language, and whether the point matches a named place.

Coordinate formats Google Maps accepts
Google Maps supports these three latitude-and-longitude formats:

These examples and supported formats are listed in Google’s coordinate-search help. Use one format consistently rather than combining pieces from different systems.
Formatting rules that prevent mistakes
- Put latitude first. The order is
latitude, longitude, not longitude then latitude. Reversing the values can point to a different place, or produce an invalid pair. - Keep values within range. Latitude must be from
-90to90; longitude must be from-180to180. - Use a period for decimal fractions. Type
41.40338, not41,40338. A comma between the two coordinates is fine; commas used as decimal marks can make the pair ambiguous or fail to parse. - Preserve the hemisphere. In signed decimal coordinates, positive latitude is north and negative latitude is south; positive longitude is east and negative longitude is west. For example,
40.748817, -73.985428indicates north latitude and west longitude. - Do not double-mark a hemisphere. With decimal values, use the minus sign where needed. With DMS or DMM, use the appropriate N, S, E, or W letter. Avoid adding both a negative sign and a hemisphere letter to the same value.
- For clean pasting, include only the values. Prefer
40.748817, -73.985428over a longer string containing labels, extra punctuation, or unrelated text.

Find coordinates for a point in Google Maps
- Computer: Right-click the location on the map. The latitude and longitude appear in the pop-up; click the coordinate display to copy it.
- Android: Press and hold an unlabeled area of the map to drop a pin. The coordinates may appear in the search field or location details.
- iPhone or iPad: Touch and hold an unlabeled spot to drop a pin, then open the place sheet to look for the coordinates.
On mobile, where coordinates appear can differ by interface and by whether the selected spot has a name or address. Google documents these methods in its coordinate help, with platform-specific pages for Android and iOS.

If the coordinates do not work or show the wrong place
- Check the order: make sure the first value is latitude and the second is longitude.
- Check signs and hemisphere letters: a missing minus sign can move a point across the equator or prime meridian. In decimal coordinates, western longitudes are normally negative; in DMS or DMM, check for W or S where appropriate.
- Check punctuation: use a period for decimal fractions, and remove extra labels or stray symbols if the search fails. DMS symbols copied from another source may not transfer cleanly.
- Check the ranges: latitude outside -90 to 90 or longitude outside -180 to 180 cannot be a valid latitude/longitude pair.
- Confirm the input type: UTM coordinates, grid references, Plus Codes, and what3words addresses are not ordinary latitude/longitude pairs. Do not assume Google Maps will parse every coordinate system as a latitude-and-longitude search.
- Consider the source’s coordinate system or datum: local surveying grids and some non-WGS84 data may need conversion before they match a standard GPS latitude/longitude location.
- Try the original values in another supported format: this can help expose a transcription or symbol error, but do not change values arbitrarily.
- Check the map, not just the address: a valid point in a remote or sparsely mapped area may have no conventional address. Zoom in to inspect where the pin falls relative to the intended feature.
A plausible-looking pin does not prove the pair is correct: reversing two values can still produce numbers that fall within both valid ranges. Compare the result with the expected region before relying on it.

Entering coordinates finds the point; it does not by itself guarantee a route to the exact spot. Open the result or dropped-pin details and choose Directions where available. Google’s routing follows mapped roads and paths, access restrictions, and available navigation data, so a route may end near a coordinate rather than at a door, trailhead, or remote point.
To share it, you can send the coordinate pair or share the Google Maps result. A Google Maps link is convenient for someone using Maps; numeric coordinates are easier to inspect and reuse in GPS, GIS, and other tools.

Plus Codes are another way to identify and share places, including locations without street addresses. Google describes them as digital addresses derived from latitude and longitude (Google’s Plus Codes overview). They are useful for sharing within Google Maps, but are not a substitute when a tool or workflow specifically requires numeric coordinates.
Precision is not the same as accuracy
More decimal places represent a finer numerical coordinate, but they do not guarantee that the source location, GPS reading, or map imagery is equally accurate. A pin can mark the entered point precisely on the map while still missing the intended entrance or physical feature. For a critical destination, verify the pin against reliable local information before using it.
