The redesigned Windows 11 App Picker—the Open with dialog—was a hidden experiment associated with Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22563, released to the Dev Channel on February 24, 2022. Contemporary testing used ViVeTool feature ID 36302090 to turn it on. This is a historical, build-sensitive tweak, not a supported setting for ordinary current Windows 11 installations; it may fail or cause problems on other builds.
What the redesigned App Picker changed
Windows shows the App Picker when you choose an application to open a file. Reports from the Build 22563 period described a visual redesign with rounded corners, Fluent-style effects, dark-mode support, and a clearer division between suggested apps and other installed applications. The dialog also made the Always and Just once choices more explicit and, in some reports, offered a way to find another app, including through Microsoft Store.
Those descriptions come from contemporary testing, not a Microsoft feature announcement. Microsoft’s Build 22563 release post did not list the App Picker among the build’s announced changes. Its exact appearance could also vary between installations.
Before you begin
- Check the build: This procedure was reported for Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22563 and builds from that development period. Press Win + R, enter
winver, and press Enter to see your Windows version and OS build. - Use the right context: Build 22563 was a Dev Channel preview, not a regular stable release. Microsoft cautioned that Dev Channel features could change, disappear, or never ship broadly.
- Get ViVeTool from its project: ViVeTool is an independent open-source utility, not a Microsoft tool. Download the package for your computer’s architecture from the official ViVeTool releases page. Its current releases and command syntax may differ from those used in 2022.
- Use an administrator account: The historical command was run from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Consider the risk: This was experimental. Contemporary testing reported crashes when opening some image files, even though other file types worked. Avoid enabling it on a computer where reliability matters.
ViVeTool’s compatibility guidance explains that feature toggles depend on the Windows build. Do not assume this ID works on a current Windows release.

Enable the App Picker on a compatible historical build
- Download and extract ViVeTool. Extract the ZIP contents to a dedicated folder, such as
C:ViVeTool. There is no need to place the files inC:WindowsSystem32. - Open Command Prompt as administrator. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Change to the extracted folder. For the example folder, enter:
cd /d C:ViVeToolIf you used a different folder, substitute its path. Put quotation marks around a path containing spaces:
cd /d "C:UsersYourNameDownloadsViVeTool" - Run the historical enable command:

- Restart Windows. Reboot before testing the change.
Later ViVeTool versions may use newer command terminology; the project’s source code documents legacy command forms. Do not assume substituting syntax or using a newer release will make this old feature ID work on a different build.
Test the new dialog
- After restarting, right-click a file that can be opened by more than one installed application.
- Choose Open with, then Choose another app or the equivalent option shown in your build. Depending on the context menu, you may need to choose Show more options first.
- Select an application and test Just once to open the file without changing its default, or Always to make that app the default for the file type.
The labels and menu route can vary between Windows builds. If an application is missing, the issue may be its file association rather than the picker: Windows lists apps registered to handle the selected file type, and portable or incorrectly registered apps may not appear.

Undo the change
In an elevated Command Prompt, change to the ViVeTool folder again and run the historical rollback command:
ViVeTool.exe delconfig 36302090 2Restart Windows afterward. Treat this as the rollback command for the historical procedure, not a universal instruction for every later ViVeTool release. If the picker remains unstable, revert it before trying other changes.

Troubleshooting
“ViVeTool” is not recognized or the command cannot run
Make sure the ZIP was extracted, the elevated Command Prompt is in the folder containing ViVeTool.exe, and the executable filename matches. To check, run:
cd /d "C:pathtoViVeTool"
dirThen run the command by its listed filename. Contemporary instructions recommended Command Prompt; if using PowerShell, a relative executable path may need the prefix . —type it as ./ViVeTool.exe only if that shell accepts it, or use the documented PowerShell form . ViVeTool.exe? For this historical procedure, prefer Command Prompt to avoid shell-specific path issues.

The command succeeds, but the dialog looks unchanged
Recheck winver, verify you used the appropriate architecture package, and confirm the command ran from an elevated Command Prompt. Restart the PC. If the UI still does not change, the feature may be absent, controlled by additional dependencies, or incompatible with your build or ViVeTool version. Stop rather than trying random feature IDs.
The picker freezes or crashes
Undo the feature with ViVeTool.exe delconfig 36302090 2 from the elevated Command Prompt, then restart. A contemporary report noted crashes with some image files. If Windows remains unstable, use an available System Restore point or restore from a backup rather than enabling unrelated hidden features.
A Windows update changes or removes the feature
Feature configuration can change between builds. An update may undo the setting, make the ID ineffective, or alter the behavior. ViVeTool’s build-compatibility guidance is a reason not to reapply an old command blindly after upgrading.

The evidence establishes this as a Build 22563-era Insider experiment, not as a universally supported feature in current Windows 11. It does not establish that the redesigned picker shipped in stable Windows. If your goal is simply to change which application opens a file, use Windows’ supported Settings > Apps > Default apps controls instead; that changes file associations but does not enable this experimental interface.
