On a computer, open Chrome’s More ⋮ → Settings → Languages, then turn on Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages. You can go straight to chrome://settings/languages. Choose the language you write in, then select Basic or Enhanced spell check. Chrome on Android and iPhone or iPad uses the device’s keyboard or operating-system spell checker instead of this desktop control.
Turn on spell check in Chrome on a computer
- Open Google Chrome.
- Select More ⋮ in the upper-right corner, then select Settings.
- Open Languages. If you do not see it in the sidebar, enter
chrome://settings/languagesin the address bar. - Scroll to Spell check and turn on Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages.
- Enable the language or regional variant you want Chrome to check.
The wording or placement can vary slightly by platform, Chrome version, and organization policy. Google’s Chrome spell-check instructions cover the computer settings and available modes.
Chrome checks spelling in many webpage text fields, underlines words it considers misspelled, and may show corrections in a right-click menu. It is not a full grammar, style, or rewriting tool, and some websites use editors that do not support Chrome’s native spell checker.
Choose the right language and regional spelling
Turning on the main spell-check control is not always enough: the language you are writing in also needs to be enabled. In Settings → Languages, review the spell-check language list and select the dictionary that matches your writing—for example, English (United States), English (United Kingdom), or English (Canada), or Spanish, French, or German.

If Chrome flags acceptable words or suggests the wrong regional spelling, put your preferred language higher in Preferred languages and temporarily disable other variants of the same language. This is a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee that every suggestion will follow one regional dictionary. Google documents language-specific spell-check controls and preferred-language settings in its Chrome Enterprise language settings.
Basic or Enhanced: which should you use?

Enhanced is not a universally better choice: its suggestions may suit one writer or language better than another, and it is not local-only spell checking. For confidential, regulated, or proprietary text, use Basic and follow your workplace or school’s rules. Google explains Basic spell check and Enhanced spell check separately.
Test that spell check works
- Open a simple webpage with a text box, such as a search field or basic form.
- Type an unmistakably misspelled word.
- Check whether Chrome underlines it.
- Right-click (or secondary-click) the underlined word and see whether a correction appears.
If you see no underline, check the enabled language and test in a plain text field; the site may use a custom editor. If a word is underlined but no suggestions appear, the dictionary or spell-check service may be unavailable or misconfigured. A right-click Spell check submenu or a control such as Check the spelling of text fields may be available on some pages or platforms, but context-menu options vary; the Settings page is the main control.

Spell check on Android
Chrome for Android does not use the desktop Settings → Languages → Spell check switch. Google identifies the Android keyboard app as the spell-check provider. Open Android Settings, find the keyboard or on-screen keyboard settings, choose the active keyboard, and enable its spell-check, text-correction, or dictionary options. Menu names differ by Android version, phone maker, and keyboard app, such as Gboard or Samsung Keyboard.
Spell check on iPhone and iPad
Chrome on iOS relies on iOS spell checking. Open the device’s Settings → General → Keyboard, then enable Check Spelling; turn on Auto-Correction too if you want the keyboard to replace some words as you type. Make sure the keyboard language you need is installed and active. These options affect keyboard behavior across apps, not just Chrome.
Fix common Chrome spell-check problems
No words are underlined
- Return to
chrome://settings/languagesand confirm the main spell-check switch and the language are enabled. - Refresh the page and try a basic text field on another site to rule out a custom editor.
- Fully close and reopen Chrome. Check for updates at
chrome://settings/help. - Test in a new Incognito window: Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+N on macOS. Incognito is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix; extensions can be allowed to run there if enabled.
- If it works in Incognito but not in your regular window, temporarily disable extensions and test again. Manage them at
chrome://extensions/, then re-enable them one at a time. Writing assistants, privacy tools, security software, or text-replacement extensions may affect text fields.
Words are underlined, but there are no suggestions
Confirm that the right language is enabled. If you use Enhanced, network restrictions, service connectivity, or organization policy may affect it; try Basic as a diagnostic and fallback, noting that its suggestions can differ. You can also check for an available spell-check option in the field’s context menu.

Chrome flags correct words or uses the wrong spelling
Select the intended regional dictionary, move it higher in preferred languages, and temporarily disable competing variants. For example, if you want US spelling, test with English (United States) enabled and other English variants disabled. Language priority is a troubleshooting step, not a promise that every correction will strictly follow one variant.
It works on some sites but not others
The site may use a custom editor, embedded field, or drawing-style text area, or may suppress browser spell checking. Try an ordinary text box to isolate the issue. Use the site’s own checker if it provides one; Chrome’s feature cannot force compatibility with every web application.
The setting is missing, greyed out, or keeps changing
First check whether you are on Android or iOS, where the device handles spell checking. On a work- or school-managed computer or Chromebook, an administrator can enforce or disable spell check, restrict languages, control Enhanced spell check, or prevent changes. If the device is managed, ask your administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling Chrome. Google lists relevant controls in its Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.

What Chrome spell check does—and does not do
Chrome’s built-in feature is primarily for spelling in supported webpage text fields. It does not replace a grammar or style assistant, and it may not work in every web editor. A site’s own checker or a separate writing tool may be needed for grammar, tone, or rewriting; check any tool’s data practices before using it with sensitive text.

Does Chrome spell check send my text to Google?
Google says Basic uses a local dictionary and does not send entered text to Google for spell-check processing. Enhanced sends text entered in browser fields to Google to improve suggestions. Other tools, extensions, websites, or device services may have their own data practices.

Why is spell check missing in Chrome on Android?
Android Chrome relies on the active Android keyboard app for spell checking, so it does not have the same desktop Languages → Spell check control. Check the text-correction or spell-check settings for your keyboard.

Can Chrome check grammar?
Chrome’s built-in feature primarily checks spelling. Grammar, style, and rewriting tools may come from a website or a separate extension.
Why does Chrome spell check work on one website but not another?
Some sites use custom text editors or suppress browser spell checking. Test a basic text box on another page to distinguish a site-specific limitation from a Chrome setting issue.
