Telegram’s Passcode Lock adds a local lock to the app on the device where you enable it. Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock, create and confirm a passcode, then optionally turn on biometric unlocking and choose an Auto-Lock interval. Menu labels can vary slightly by platform and client. This protects an open Telegram app from casual access; it does not secure your account on other devices.
Enable Telegram Passcode Lock
Use Telegram’s own settings—not your phone’s system settings. The usual path is Telegram → Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock. Create and confirm a passcode when prompted. Some clients offer a simple four-digit code; available formats and labels can vary.
Telegram’s FAQ describes the feature as an app-level lock. Telegram’s interface resources show controls for passcodes, biometrics, Auto-Lock, and manual locking across clients, though the screens are not identical on every operating system.

Android
- Open Telegram and tap the three-line menu, or open the Settings tab if your version shows one.
- Tap Settings if needed, then Privacy and Security.
- Tap Passcode Lock, create a passcode, and confirm it.
- If offered, enable Unlock with Fingerprint or the available biometric option.
- Choose an Auto-Lock interval if you want Telegram to lock after inactivity.
Fingerprint unlocking depends on the device and Telegram client. Do not expect that exact option on a device without supported fingerprint authentication.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Telegram and tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy and Security, then Passcode Lock.
- Create and confirm your passcode.
- Enable Unlock with Face ID or Touch ID, if the option is offered on your device.
- Set an Auto-Lock interval if desired.
Which biometric label appears depends on your device and client. Older Telegram materials refer to Touch ID; supported newer devices may offer Face ID. See Telegram’s passcode feature announcement.
Telegram Desktop
In the desktop client, open Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock, then follow the prompts to set a passcode and, if available, configure Auto-Lock. Desktop menus vary by operating system and client; if the path differs, look for Passcode Lock under Privacy and Security. Telegram’s interface resources show desktop passcode and locking controls, but this should not be taken to mean every web or third-party client offers the same feature.
A desktop passcode protects only that local installation. It does not sign you out of other Telegram sessions or lock your account on another device.

Lock Telegram immediately
After setting a passcode, Telegram displays a lock icon above the chat list. Tap or click it to lock the app right away; the next access requires the passcode or an enabled biometric method. You do not have to wait for Auto-Lock. The lock icon and manual-lock behavior are documented in Telegram’s official interface resources.

Choose an Auto-Lock interval
Auto-Lock asks for authentication after Telegram has been inactive for the selected period. Depending on the client, choices may include Disabled, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 1 hour, among other intervals; these are examples, not a universal list. Telegram’s interface strings show some of these options.
A short interval is useful on a shared phone or tablet, but may interrupt frequent app switching. A longer interval is more convenient but leaves Telegram accessible for longer if the device is unattended. Auto-Lock is separate from your device’s screen timeout: the screen lock protects the operating system, while Telegram’s lock adds an app-specific barrier.
Use biometrics as a convenience option
Where supported, Telegram can offer fingerprint, Touch ID, Face ID, or another biometric method supported by the device and client. Biometrics are an alternative way to unlock the local app, not a replacement for remembering the Telegram passcode. A device may require its primary credential after a restart or security event, and Telegram may sometimes ask for the passcode again.

Important: forgetting the passcode can cost you Secret Chats
Telegram does not offer a normal email-based reset for its local app passcode. Telegram’s interface warning says that if you forget it, you may need to log out or reinstall the app. The recovery route depends on the client and what controls remain available.
Before logging out or reinstalling, understand the consequence: ordinary cloud chats remain associated with your Telegram account and can sync again after you sign back in, but Secret Chats are tied to the device and session and are lost when that session is logged out or the app is reinstalled. Telegram explains this distinction in its FAQ. Do not casually delete the app if preserving Secret Chats matters.
This local passcode is different from your 2-Step Verification password. Telegram’s FAQ describes a recovery email for 2-Step Verification; that does not reset the local Passcode Lock.
What each Telegram security feature protects

Passcode Lock does not encrypt all messages end-to-end; ordinary cloud chats and Secret Chats have different security properties. For account sign-in protection, consider Settings → Privacy and Security → 2-Step Verification. Telegram also lists Passkeys under Privacy and Security; they are a separate account-login method that can use a device PIN or biometric rather than an SMS login code. Check notifications and app previews separately
A Telegram passcode does not necessarily hide message text shown by the operating system before Telegram opens. Review both Telegram’s notification settings and your phone or tablet’s lock-screen notification settings; hide message previews if other people might see the screen. Also consider what the app switcher or task switcher displays. Telegram’s interface resources include an Allow Screen Capture control and warn that allowing capture can make chat content visible in the task switcher even when the app passcode is enabled. Exact behavior varies by operating system.

Telegram can be signed in on multiple devices at the same time. To review them, open Settings → Devices, check the active sessions, and terminate any you do not recognize. A passcode on your phone or desktop does not lock or sign out another session. If you use a shared or work computer, log out when it is outside your control; an employer or administrator may have access beyond the app’s local lock.
When Passcode Lock is not enough
Use a strong device screen lock as your first line of defense, with Telegram Passcode Lock as an additional barrier. A person who knows your device unlock code may be able to change settings or reach data outside Telegram. Rooted or jailbroken devices, malware, spyware, or administrative control can undermine ordinary app protections. Telegram warns that physical, root-level, or organizational access to a device can defeat app-level protections; see its FAQ.
For a shared phone or tablet, choose a passcode others will not guess, enable biometrics only if appropriate, use a short Auto-Lock period, hide lock-screen previews, and review sessions. On a personal phone, prioritize a strong device lock and choose an app timeout that fits how often you switch apps. On a shared computer, use the desktop passcode if available, but do not rely on it against an administrator with control of the machine.

Troubleshooting
“I can’t find Passcode Lock”
Make sure you are in Telegram’s own Settings → Privacy and Security, rather than the phone’s settings. The layout differs between Android, iOS, and desktop, and a web or third-party client may not offer the same controls. Look for the exact label Passcode Lock, use settings search if the client has it, and update the official app if needed.
“Telegram asks for a passcode I don’t remember setting”
It may have been enabled earlier or configured by someone else with access to the device. Make sure you are not confusing it with the device unlock code or your 2-Step Verification password. Before logging out or reinstalling, read the warning above: Secret Chats in that session will be lost.
“My chats still appear in notifications”
That is a separate notification-preview setting. Change Telegram’s notification options and the operating system’s lock-screen display settings; the app passcode does not universally hide notification text.
