On Windows 11, manage Skype discoverability inside Skype—not in Windows privacy or search settings. The control is Appear in search results under Profile picture → Settings → Contacts → Privacy. It governs general Skype search visibility; Microsoft does not document a separate switch for hiding only your phone number while keeping the rest of your profile searchable.
Turn off Skype search visibility
- Open Skype on your Windows 11 PC and go to Chats.
- Select your profile picture, then select Settings.
- Open Contacts, then Privacy.
- Turn Appear in search results off.
Microsoft says opting out makes your profile unsearchable to other people in Skype. Allow the setting time to synchronize. This is a public search-visibility change; Microsoft does not say it deletes existing chats or contacts, or blocks every other way someone might contact you. Turn search visibility back on
Return to Profile picture → Settings → Contacts → Privacy and turn Appear in search results on. Your profile will be discoverable in Skype search again. The setting applies broadly, so turning it on is not a phone-number-only choice.

Change or remove the phone number on your Skype profile
If you want to stop associating a particular number with the profile, manage the number separately from search visibility:

- Open your Skype profile page or open your profile in Skype.
- Go to Contact details and choose Edit Profile.
- Edit or remove the phone number, then select Save.
- If prompted, select Verify phone number and complete the verification process.
In the app, Microsoft also gives the route Profile picture → Settings → Account and Profile; select Verify under the phone number. A number must be verified to save it to the profile. Microsoft says only one verified phone number can be associated with a Skype profile, and an unverified number may not be searchable. A phone number may also be a Microsoft account sign-in alias. Removing it from Skype Contact details is not necessarily the same as removing it from the account’s sign-in options; check Microsoft account sign-in management separately if that is your goal. Older instructions may also show Home and Office phone fields. Microsoft says newer Skype profile experiences no longer allow users to add or update those fields; existing entries may be inactivated and removable.

Can you hide only the number and stay searchable?
Microsoft documents one general Appear in search results control, not an individual phone-number visibility switch. Based on those separate instructions for search visibility and profile numbers, do not assume you can remain searchable by name while hiding only the number. If you want to reduce discovery through the number, the documented options are to turn off search visibility for the profile or remove or change the number associated with it. Removing the number does not itself guarantee a particular search result.

- Search visibility is off. Check Appear in search results in Skype’s Privacy settings.
- The number is missing, outdated, or unverified. Review Contact details and complete verification if prompted.
- The number format differs. Check that the saved number, including its country code, is the one your friend is searching for; Skype may not match the format they expect.
- The profile may be findable by another identifier. Being visible by name does not establish that a phone-number search will return the same result.
- Your friend may be using the wrong search. Search within Skype, not the Windows taskbar or another Microsoft app.
- A client may show stale information. Microsoft warns that older Skype versions may not accurately reflect an opt-out changed in a newer version.
If a person still appears to find you after you opt out, they may be opening an existing chat or contact, using an invitation or shared group, or finding you through another identifier rather than a public phone-number search. Microsoft recommends updating Skype or checking your Skype profile on the web for the most accurate view of opt-out status. An older client’s display should not be treated as authoritative.

Windows privacy settings govern device capabilities such as contacts, microphone, camera, calendar, and location. They are separate from the account-level Skype directory setting. Windows privacy information is available from Microsoft’s Windows privacy settings guide.

If the setting is missing or seems not to work
- Update Skype to the latest version available to you, then check Contacts → Privacy again.
- Sign out and back in, then allow time for the account setting to synchronize.
- Check your Skype profile on the web if an older client still shows you as discoverable; Microsoft specifically cautions that older versions may display inaccurate opt-out status.
- Confirm that the number is the one saved to the Skype profile and that verification is complete.
- For a practical test, ask someone using an up-to-date Skype client to search from a separate account, rather than relying on an existing conversation. This can help distinguish public search from an established contact path.
