To control whether the standalone PrtSc key opens the screen-snipping overlay in Windows 11, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Keyboard and turn Use the Print screen key to open screen snipping on or off. On some builds the switch is under Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard; searching Settings for “Print screen” can help locate it. This changes the PrtSc shortcut, not Snipping Tool itself or every other screenshot shortcut.
Enable the Print Screen key for screen snipping
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Keyboard. If you do not see the switch there, check Accessibility → Keyboard or search Settings for Print screen.
- Turn on Use the Print screen key to open screen snipping (wording can vary slightly).
- Press PrtSc to test. Windows should open the screen-snipping interface instead of only copying a full-screen image to the clipboard.
Microsoft Q&A reported the newer Bluetooth & devices path on February 14, 2026, while older guidance and some Windows 11 builds show Accessibility → Keyboard. See Microsoft’s answer about the missing Print Screen setting.
Disable the shortcut and check what PrtSc does
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Keyboard (or Accessibility → Keyboard on builds that place it there).
- Turn off Use the Print screen key to open screen snipping.
- Press PrtSc to verify the result on your PC.
With the switch off, the standalone key should no longer open the Snipping Tool selection overlay. On systems using traditional Windows behavior, it may copy a full-screen image to the clipboard. That outcome can vary with Windows configuration, keyboard hardware, and other software, so test it rather than assuming the old behavior has returned exactly.
Choose the shortcut for the capture you want
Clipboard capture and automatic file saving are different outcomes. These shortcuts offer alternatives without changing the standalone PrtSc setting:

Microsoft lists these Snipping Tool capture shortcuts and modes in its Snipping Tool guide. Its Print Screen shortcut guidance describes screenshot saving under Pictures → Screenshots for the Windows + PrtSc shortcut.
If the setting is missing
- Search Settings for Print screen.
- Check both Bluetooth & devices → Keyboard and Accessibility → Keyboard.
- Install pending Windows updates, restart the PC, and look again.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. If that opens the overlay, Snipping Tool is available; the issue is specifically the standalone key’s assignment.
- If the option remains unavailable, check whether a work or school policy, OEM keyboard utility, or screenshot app manages the key. If you are comfortable editing the registry, use the advanced fallback below.

Use the registry only as an advanced fallback
The per-user value identified in Microsoft Q&A is PrintScreenKeyForSnippingEnabled, under HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelKeyboard. A value of 0 disables the Print Screen snipping shortcut; 1 enables it. This is a per-user change, not a guaranteed setting for every account on the PC.
Back up the registry before editing. In Registry Editor, you can export the Keyboard key, or create a restore point. Change only the named value; incorrect registry edits can cause problems. Microsoft Q&A also cautions users to back up before making registry changes.

regedit, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears. - Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelKeyboard. - In the right pane, open
PrintScreenKeyForSnippingEnabledand set its value to0to disable the shortcut or1to enable it. If it is absent, create a DWORD (32-bit) Value with that exact name and set the desired value. - Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, then test PrtSc.
The registry path and value are described in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance and the Q&A answer identifying the 0 and 1 values. This registry procedure is a fallback described in Q&A, not the standard method in Microsoft’s consumer support article.
If Snipping Tool still opens after you turn the switch off
The Windows switch governs Windows’ assignment for the standalone key. If the overlay still appears, check whether something else is generating or intercepting the shortcut before making additional system changes.

- Confirm you changed the setting or registry value for the Windows account you are currently using.
- Sign out and back in or restart after a registry change.
- Temporarily exit screenshot utilities such as ShareX, Snagit, or other capture software from the notification area, then test again. A program can register its own Print Screen hotkey.
- Check OEM keyboard software and, on a laptop, try the key with and without Fn. Function-lock settings and compact keyboard layouts can affect which key event Windows receives.
- Test Windows + Shift + S separately. If it opens the overlay, that is a separate shortcut, not evidence that the PrtSc switch failed.
- If possible, test a different keyboard to distinguish a Windows setting from a hardware or keyboard-utility issue.

Turning off the Windows switch does not automatically assign PrtSc to ShareX, Snagit, or another program. The application must support registering its own hotkey, and it may conflict with Windows or OEM keyboard software. Microsoft Q&A says Windows does not provide a built-in Settings control for selecting an arbitrary replacement screenshot app; see the answer about changing the program launched by Print Screen.

Does turning off the shortcut remove Snipping Tool?
No. It changes the action assigned to the standalone PrtSc key. Snipping Tool remains available from Start, and Windows + Shift + S continues to open the screen-snipping overlay. You do not need to uninstall the app to stop the Print Screen key from invoking it.
