Windows 11 normally lets you turn optional diagnostic data on or off from Settings. Turning it off does not disable all Windows data collection: required diagnostic data continues to be sent on typical personal PCs. The setting is found at Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Diagnostics & feedback.
What required and optional diagnostic data mean
Microsoft divides Windows diagnostic data into two main levels. The labels shown in Windows 11 may vary slightly by edition, release, updates, and device-management status.
Required diagnostic data
Required diagnostic data is the minimum information Microsoft says Windows needs to help keep the operating system secure, updated, reliable, and functioning as expected. It may include device configuration, operating-system details, reliability information, and crash metadata.

On a normal consumer Windows 11 installation, required diagnostic data cannot be disabled from the standard Settings page.
Optional diagnostic data
Optional diagnostic data provides additional information for troubleshooting, compatibility analysis, and product improvement. According to Microsoft, it may include more detailed device and configuration information, Windows and application usage and performance data, device activity, enhanced error reports, diagnostic logs, larger crash dumps, and information about websites browsed.
This does not mean that Microsoft necessarily records everything you do online. The documentation describes categories of information that may be included in optional diagnostic data, depending on the configuration and circumstances.

How to enable optional diagnostic data
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy & security.
- Select Diagnostics & feedback.
- Find the Diagnostic data section.
- Turn on Send optional diagnostic data.
Windows will then send required diagnostic data plus the optional diagnostic data permitted by the device’s configuration. Microsoft’s current consumer instructions are available in its Diagnostics & feedback privacy guide.

After enabling the setting, Windows may show related controls such as Tailored experiences, Improve inking & typing, Feedback frequency, and Diagnostic Data Viewer. These are separate controls; enabling optional diagnostic data does not automatically make all of them equivalent to the main switch.
How to disable optional diagnostic data
- Open Start → Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security → Diagnostics & feedback.
- Under Diagnostic data, turn off Send optional diagnostic data.
Windows will continue sending required diagnostic data. This setting disables the optional level; it does not disable Windows diagnostic data completely and does not block every connection made by Windows or Microsoft services.

Turning off the switch also does not automatically delete diagnostic information already collected. Microsoft says that changing the setting does not delete diagnostic data associated with your Microsoft account. Account privacy controls and local log cleanup are separate actions, and deleting local logs cannot necessarily remove information that has already been transmitted.
Can you disable all Windows diagnostic data?
Not through the ordinary consumer Settings control. Microsoft documents a Diagnostic data off (Security) level for certain editions and managed configurations, including Windows Enterprise, Windows Education, and Windows Server. It is not the normal option provided to Windows 11 Home users.
- Windows 11 Home: Required diagnostic data is generally the practical minimum.
- Windows 11 Pro: Administrators can manage diagnostic levels with Group Policy, although the available options still depend on the Windows release and configuration.
- Enterprise and Education: Organizations can apply stricter diagnostic-data policies where supported.
Registry changes, firewall rules, and disabling Windows services should not be presented as a supported way to create a guaranteed “zero telemetry” state. They can break Windows features, be overwritten by policy, or fail to stop other required service communications.

Why is the switch greyed out or missing?
If the page says “Some settings are hidden or managed by your organization,” a workplace, school, domain, MDM platform, Configuration Manager deployment, Windows Insider configuration, or previously applied policy may control the setting.

Start by reading the message at the top of Settings → Privacy & security → Diagnostics & feedback. Then check Settings → Accounts → Access work or school to see whether the PC is enrolled in an organization.
If the setting keeps reverting
- Check whether Windows reports that the device is managed.
- Review Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
- If the PC is personal but still connected to an old organization, remove that connection only if it is no longer needed.
- On Windows 11 Pro or higher, review Local Group Policy.
- On an organization-managed device, ask the administrator to check domain policy or MDM settings.
- Investigate registry values only after checking policy precedence.
A policy enforced by a domain or MDM service can overwrite a local Settings change. An Insider or evaluation build may also have program- or build-specific eligibility requirements. Do not assume that every Insider installation universally requires optional diagnostic data.
If the option is missing
Make sure you are viewing Diagnostics & feedback, not App diagnostics. The two pages control different things. Other possible causes include a restricted edition, an organization policy, different wording in your Windows release, or a managed configuration.
Administrator controls with Group Policy
On editions that include the Group Policy tools, administrators can configure the diagnostic level centrally.

Set the diagnostic-data level
- Press Win + R, type
gpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Go to
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Data Collection and Preview Builds. - Open Allow diagnostic data.
- Set the policy to Enabled.
- Choose Send optional diagnostic data from the options list.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Refresh policy with
gpupdate /force, or restart the computer.
The documented policy values are:

Enhanced is a legacy policy level and is not available in the normal current Windows 11 interface. The Microsoft policy guidance should be checked when applying settings to a particular release.
Prevent users from changing the setting
- In Group Policy, open
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Data Collection and Preview Builds. - Open Configure diagnostic data opt-in settings user interface.
- Set it to Enabled.
- Select Disable diagnostic data opt-in settings.
- Apply the policy and refresh Group Policy.
This controls whether users can change the setting in Windows. It does not, by itself, define which diagnostic level the organization enforces. That is the role of Allow diagnostic data. Microsoft maps this user-interface control to the ConfigureTelemetryOptInSettingsUx MDM setting and the policy location SoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsDataCollection.
Limit crash dumps and diagnostic logs
Organizations can retain optional diagnostic data while limiting some of its more detailed components:
- Limit dump collection:
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Data Collection and Preview Builds → Limit dump collection. When enabled, Windows Error Reporting is limited to kernel mini dumps and user-mode triage dumps rather than potentially larger dump types. - Limit diagnostic log collection: Use the same policy branch and enable this setting to limit additional diagnostic logs sent to Microsoft.
These are reductions within an optional-data configuration, not a complete diagnostic-data opt-out.
MDM and Microsoft Intune
Administrators using Microsoft Intune or another MDM platform can manage relevant Policy CSP settings, including:

System/AllowTelemetrySystem/LimitDumpCollectionSystem/LimitDiagnosticLogCollection
The latter two are documented for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022. On an enrolled device, MDM policy may take precedence over a local Settings change. See Microsoft’s System Policy CSP documentation.

Required service data
Connected Windows features may send required service data so that a particular online service can function. Microsoft says this is separate from Windows diagnostic-data consent. Turning off optional diagnostic data does not stop all required service data. See Microsoft’s explanation of required service data.
Tailored experiences
Tailored experiences uses diagnostic data for personalized recommendations, tips, offers, and some Microsoft consumer features. Turning it off is not the same as disabling optional diagnostic data.

Settings → Privacy & security → App diagnostics controls whether apps can access diagnostic information about other apps. It does not control Windows diagnostic data sent to Microsoft. Microsoft documents this separately in its Windows app diagnostics privacy guide.
Feedback frequency
Feedback frequency controls how often Windows asks you for feedback. It does not independently disable diagnostic-data collection.
Which setting should you choose?

Windows 11 releases currently documented by Microsoft include 25H2, 24H2, 23H2, 22H2, and 21H2, although older releases may no longer be serviced. Labels and behavior can change according to the release, edition, cumulative updates, Insider status, and management policies.
For most personal users, the practical choice is straightforward: leave Send optional diagnostic data off if minimizing additional data sharing matters more than extra diagnostics, or enable it temporarily while troubleshooting a persistent Windows problem. In either case, required diagnostic data remains enabled on a typical consumer installation.
