To enable file sharing, first choose how the recipient will get the files: use Windows or Mac network sharing for a persistent folder on a trusted local network, Quick Share for a nearby one-time transfer, or a cloud link when the recipient is elsewhere. These methods are not interchangeable: a local network share usually is not reachable over the internet, while cloud sharing requires uploading files to a service.

Before sharing, choose a specific folder, decide whether recipients need read or edit access, and use a trusted network. Do not expose SMB file sharing directly to the public internet.
Enable file sharing on Windows 11
Windows network sharing is for devices that can reach one another on the same local network. Both computers may be on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a suitably configured VPN; guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, or separate network segments can prevent access even when the devices are in the same building. Microsoft’s Windows network-sharing guide covers the current workflow. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these steps prioritize Windows 11.
Turn on discovery and sharing
- Connect both computers to the trusted home or workplace network.
- On the computer that will host the folder, open Settings and search for Manage advanced sharing settings.
- Under Private networks, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing. Set the network profile to Private only if you trust that network; do not mark public Wi-Fi as private to make sharing work.
Share a particular folder
- In File Explorer, right-click the folder you want to share.
- Select Show more options > Give access to > Specific people.
- Choose the named user or users who should have access, then confirm. Choose Everyone only if broad access by any suitably connected user is truly intended.
Grant only the access needed. Read-only access is appropriate when people only need to view or copy files; grant write access when they must add or change files. Sharing a folder does not necessarily grant access if the user also lacks permission to the folder itself.

Open the share from another Windows computer
In File Explorer, select Network to browse for computers, or enter the host and share name directly in the address bar:
\COMPUTER-NAMESharedFolderReplace the example names with the actual computer and shared-folder names. If you want the share to appear as a drive, open File Explorer > This PC > More > Map network drive, choose a drive letter, enter the network folder path, and select Reconnect at sign-in if you want it to persist. Select Finish to connect.
Remove a Windows share
Right-click the folder, then select Show more options > Give access to > Remove access. If you mapped a network drive that you no longer need, remove it from This PC.

On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing, then turn on File Sharing. Select the information button next to it, add only the folders you intend to share, and set access for the relevant users. Choose read-only access unless recipients need to make changes. See Apple’s Mac file-sharing instructions; labels can vary slightly by macOS release.

Let a Windows computer connect to the Mac
- In the File Sharing settings, select Options.
- Turn on Share files and folders using SMB.
- Select the Mac users permitted to connect from Windows and enter the requested account password, then select Done.
From File Explorer on Windows, connect using the Mac’s name and the configured share name, for example:
\Mac-NameSharedFolderIf the name does not resolve, try the Mac’s local IP address instead, such as \192.168.1.25SharedFolder. The actual share name and credentials depend on the folders and accounts configured on the Mac; enabling File Sharing does not make every folder available automatically.
When Windows access is no longer needed, turn off the relevant SMB user access, or disable File Sharing if you no longer need any Mac shares. Apple warns that passwords for some Windows users may be stored less securely, so avoid leaving Windows accounts enabled indefinitely.

Send files to a nearby device with Quick Share
Quick Share is for nearby, one-time transfers, not a persistent shared folder. On Android, open the photo, document, or other file, tap Share > Quick Share, select the nearby recipient, and ask them to accept. You can also open Quick Share from Quick Settings and select a file there. The feature was previously called Nearby Share; Android manufacturers may use different menu labels.

Choose who can find your Android device
Open Settings, search for Quick Share, and select Who can share with you. The available choices include Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes. Prefer the narrowest option that works, and avoid leaving the phone broadly discoverable. Google’s Quick Share visibility guidance describes the options.
Transfer between Android and Windows
Install the official Quick Share for Windows app, then open it and set Device visibility to Your devices, Contacts, or, temporarily if needed, Everyone. Drag files into the app or right-click a file and choose Send with Quick Share; select the receiving device and confirm the PIN if one appears. The recipient must accept the transfer.
Google lists Android 6 or later and 64-bit Windows 10 or later as requirements; ARM-based Windows devices need Windows 11 or later. Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices, and Wi-Fi or Ethernet must be enabled. Google’s guidance also calls for the devices to be on the same network and within about 5 metres (16 feet). Quick Share for Windows is available in the United States and most countries, with some regional exclusions. Samsung PCs may use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead.
Quick Share can also work with some Apple devices, but cross-platform behavior depends on the Android device and software. Google documents an option involving an Apple device set to AirDrop’s Everyone for 10 Minutes, and a QR-code transfer route. Google says the QR route requires internet access, encrypts transfers end to end, and makes files available to download for 24 hours. Its listed limits include up to 10 GB per 24 hours, 1,000 files in one session, and 20 iPhone, iPad, or Mac receivers at a time. Check Google’s current Quick Share guidance for device and software qualifications.

Share files over the internet with a cloud service
If the recipient is in another location, a cloud link or invitation is usually easier than configuring local network sharing. It works across locations and can support collaboration, but you must upload the data and control who can access it. Do not treat a link as private just because it is difficult to guess: anyone with an unrestricted link may be able to open it.
OneDrive
Select a file or folder in OneDrive, choose Share, set who can use the link or invite specific people, choose the intended access level, select Apply, and copy the link or send the invitation. Microsoft explains the flow in its Windows file-sharing guide. Choose named recipients rather than a broad link when the files are sensitive, and revoke the invitation or link when access is no longer needed.
As of the supplied 2026 requirements information, OneDrive desktop and mobile app requirements include Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, macOS 14.4 or newer, iOS 18 or later, and Android 8 or later. Microsoft says OneDrive desktop-app support for Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier ended on August 15, 2026. Check the current OneDrive system requirements before relying on an older device.

Google Drive
In Google Drive, select the file or folder, choose Share, and set access for named people or by link. Confirm whether each recipient should be a viewer, commenter, or editor. Google’s Drive system-requirements page says Drive for desktop is available for supported Windows and macOS configurations, but there is no Drive for desktop app for Linux; Linux users can use Drive on the web. Drive for desktop also does not support SMB or NFS network volumes, so it is not a replacement for mounting a local network share.

Dropbox
Dropbox lets you share files and folders through invitations or links. Its separate Dropbox Transfer feature is designed for sending files by download link, rather than syncing a shared working folder. Dropbox says Basic users can create transfers, but limits and availability can vary by plan; check its Transfer page and system requirements for current details.
Across cloud services, check link permissions, expiry settings, account sign-in requirements, organizational restrictions, storage availability, and file-size limits. If a recipient should no longer have access, remove them or revoke the link in the service rather than assuming that deleting the message will disable it.
Linux, NAS, and business networks
Linux file sharing varies by distribution, desktop environment, firewall, and installed server software, so there is no single reliable menu path for every system. For Windows and Mac interoperability, Linux systems commonly use SMB through Samba. Use a designated directory, authenticated accounts where possible, and allow only the required sharing service on a trusted local network. Do not expose SMB directly to the internet.

A NAS typically offers a web administration interface for configuring SMB or NFS shares, users, and permissions. Menu names and security controls vary by manufacturer and model. For a workplace, follow the organization’s rules for external access, data classification, retention, and auditing; ask the administrator before enabling a share or using a consumer cloud account for confidential data.
Fix common file-sharing problems

| The other computer does not appear | Confirm both devices are on the same reachable network, not isolated guest Wi-Fi. Check that the host is awake and connected, Windows discovery and sharing are on, and the firewall allows the relevant traffic. Try entering the direct network path instead of relying on browsing. |
| The computer is visible, but access is denied | Check the account and saved credentials, the share’s user list, and permissions on the underlying folder. Share permissions and filesystem permissions are separate; the more restrictive effective permission can still block access. Work or school policy may also restrict sharing. |
| Windows cannot open a Mac share | Make sure SMB is enabled on the Mac, the Windows user is selected in File Sharing options, and the correct Mac account credentials and share path are being used. Check network and firewall settings as well. |
| Quick Share cannot find a device | Bring devices close together; check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet; make the receiving device visible; and ensure its screen is unlocked. Check that the Quick Share app is not running as administrator on Windows and that notifications are not suppressed. Confirm both devices meet the requirements. |
| A cloud link fails | Check the recipient’s permission and sign-in, link expiry, whether the file was moved or deleted, organizational external-sharing rules, and storage or file-size limits. |
| A transfer is unusually slow | For a local transfer, check Wi-Fi signal and network congestion. For cloud sharing, upload speed and file size matter. Keep the host computer awake during a LAN transfer; it cannot serve files while asleep or powered off. |
For Windows discovery problems, Microsoft also lists the Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services as relevant troubleshooting checks. Avoid disabling password-protected sharing as a routine fix: although Microsoft includes it as a troubleshooting option, doing so can weaken authentication for network access. Prefer named accounts and passwords, and if you temporarily change the setting for diagnosis, restore password protection afterward.
Turn sharing off when you are finished
- Windows LAN share: use Show more options > Give access to > Remove access on the shared folder.
- Mac: remove unneeded folders or users and turn off File Sharing or SMB access when it is no longer required.
- Quick Share: return visibility to Your devices, Contacts, or No one rather than leaving it broadly discoverable.
- Cloud service: remove recipients or revoke the link from the service’s sharing controls.
Use a local network share for continuing access to a folder on a trusted network, Quick Share for a nearby one-time transfer, and a cloud service for remote sharing or collaboration. For a simple offline handoff, removable storage is often the least complicated option.
