In the Microsoft 365 admin center, create an Edge configuration policy, add Enable Drop feature in Microsoft Edge, set it to Enabled, and assign the policy to a Microsoft Entra group. Users must be signed in to a managed Edge work profile; personal Microsoft-account profiles are outside this policy’s scope.
Drop lets a user send notes and files to themselves between signed-in Edge desktop and mobile devices. It is a lightweight self-transfer feature, not a replacement for an enterprise document-management or file-sharing system.
What the Edge Drop policy controls
The policy reference for EdgeEDropEnabled defines three states:
| Policy state | Result |
|---|---|
| Enabled | Drop can be used by users in scope. |
| Disabled | Drop cannot be used by users in scope. |
| Not configured | Drop remains available by default, according to Microsoft’s current policy documentation. |
The policy is mandatory, dynamically refreshable, and applies per profile. It does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft personal account. A work or school Microsoft Entra profile is the relevant target for centrally delivered policy.

Supported versions and platforms
| Scope | Microsoft-documented minimum |
|---|---|
| Edge management service | Microsoft Edge 115.0.1901.7 or later |
| Windows | Edge 104 or later |
| macOS | Edge 104 or later |
| Android | Edge 145 or later |
| iOS | Edge 145 or later |
The individual policy’s platform and version details are listed in Microsoft’s policy reference. The management service documentation currently states that the service is unavailable to GCC customers; confirm availability for your tenant because cloud-service eligibility can change.
Prerequisites and rollout decisions
- Access to a Microsoft 365 tenant and the Microsoft Edge Administrator role. Microsoft notes that GDAP roles are not fully supported for this service.
- A Microsoft Entra security group for the users who should receive the setting.
- Edge at or above the versions listed above, with the user signed in to the intended work profile.
- An agreed management path. Do not create competing Cloud Policy, Intune, Group Policy, and MDM settings for the same users unless your precedence design is intentional.
Because Drop moves content between a user’s signed-in devices, decide whether that behavior fits your data-handling rules before broad deployment. Consider a pilot group first, especially for regulated, privileged, kiosk, or shared-device populations.
Create the policy in the Microsoft 365 admin center
Portal wording can change. The stable route documented by Microsoft is Settings → Microsoft Edge → Configuration policies; the January 2025 HTMD walkthrough uses the same area and a Create policy action. See Microsoft’s Edge management service documentation and the original walkthrough at HTMD.

- Sign in at admin.microsoft.com with an account that has the required Edge administration permissions.
- Open Settings, select Microsoft Edge, then open Configuration policies.
- Select Create policy.
- On Basics, enter a descriptive name such as Edge Drop – Pilot Users. Include the deployment ring or group in the name, and record whether the policy is Cloud Policy or Intune-backed.
- Open Settings, choose Add settings, search for
EdgeEDropEnabled, and select Enable Drop feature in Microsoft Edge. - Set the value to Enabled, then select Select (or the portal’s equivalent confirmation control). Check that the setting appears in the selected-settings list.
- Skip Extensions unless this policy is also intended to configure extension controls; that page is unrelated to Drop.
- Open Assignments, choose Select group, select the target Microsoft Entra group, and confirm the assignment.
- On the review page, verify the name, policy type, platform,
EdgeEDropEnabledvalue, and groups. Select Review and create (or the current equivalent).
The HTMD example selects an Intune policy type and Windows 10 and later. Treat those as workflow examples, not universal requirements; available policy-type and platform choices depend on the management path and target operating systems.

Cloud Policy
Cloud Policy is the user-targeted Edge management service workflow in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft documents priority handling when multiple Cloud Policies conflict; priority 0 is the highest assignable priority.
Intune
An Intune-created Edge configuration policy can be managed through the Edge management service and is represented in the Intune portal under device configuration. The HTMD procedure uses this route. Intune conflicts do not use the same Cloud Policy priority mechanism, so avoid overlapping assignments.

Group Policy or MDM
Organizations with established device-management pipelines can deploy the same policy through Windows ADMX, registry policy, or supported mobile-management methods. Microsoft lists the Windows path as Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge, with registry location SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, value EdgeEDropEnabled, type REG_DWORD; an enabled value is 1.
Choose the workflow your organization already governs. Duplicating the setting across systems makes the effective source harder to identify.
How the policy reaches Edge
Cloud-delivered Edge policies are retrieved when the user signs in to Edge. Microsoft documents an immediate first-device check, approximately 90-minute checks for targeted users, a further check about 90 minutes after a policy change, and 24-hour checks when no change is detected. If Edge is closed at the scheduled time, the check occurs at a later browser launch. Most Cloud Policy changes take effect after Edge is restarted.

On Windows, enforcement is based on the primary account signed in to Edge. If several accounts are present, only the primary account’s policies apply. A user who belongs to the group but is browsing in another profile will not necessarily receive the setting.
Verify the setting and the feature
Inspect effective browser policy
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to
edge://policy. - Select Reload policies.
- Search for
EdgeEDropEnabled. - Confirm that the value is enabled, the policy source is the expected management channel, and no higher-precedence entry sets it to disabled.
Check the profile and interface
- Verify membership in the assigned Microsoft Entra group.
- Verify that the correct work profile is signed in and is the primary profile.
- Restart Edge after the policy has arrived.
- Check the sidebar settings at
edge://settings/sidebarand look for Drop in the available sidebar or toolbar controls.
The visible control can vary by Edge version, platform, profile, rollout state, and organization policy; policy presence at edge://policy is the more reliable deployment test.
Review Windows Intune logs when applicable
For an Intune deployment, the HTMD walkthrough checks Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider → Admin. It reports Event IDs 814 and 813 during policy processing. Treat those events as workflow-specific diagnostic evidence: payloads and event details can vary by enrollment type and deployment path.

Troubleshoot when Drop is missing
The policy is absent from edge://policy
- Confirm that the user is in the assigned group and that group membership has propagated.
- Confirm the user is signed in to the managed work profile, not a personal Microsoft-account profile.
- Check the Edge version and restart the browser.
- Allow for the documented polling interval, then select Reload policies.
- Check the management-service or Intune status before recreating the policy.
The policy is present but Drop remains unavailable
- Inspect the policy’s source and value for a conflicting disabled entry.
- Check local Group Policy and MDM. Microsoft states that conflicting MDM or Group Policy values override Edge management service policy.
- Check whether a device policy conflicts with a user policy; device policy takes precedence.
- Confirm that the user is not using a personal Microsoft-account profile, which the policy reference excludes.
- Check platform support, sidebar availability, and any organization-level controls that intentionally restrict the feature.
Changing precedence
Microsoft documents a private registry-controlled override that makes Edge management service policy supersede platform policy:
reg add HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftEdge ^
/v EdgeManagementPolicyOverridesPlatformPolicy ^
/t REG_DWORD ^
/d 1
Do not use this as a routine fix. Remove or change the conflicting MDM or Group Policy at its source unless a documented policy architecture requires the override.
Governance and safer deployment
Before enabling Drop broadly, determine whether users may transfer corporate content to all of their signed-in Edge devices, including mobile devices. Review DLP, retention, regulated-data, acceptable-use, and endpoint-protection requirements. The policy reference explains availability control but does not by itself establish your organization’s compliance or retention posture.
- Assign the enabled policy to a pilot group.
- Test work-profile sign-in and multiple-profile behavior.
- Test supported Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android scenarios used by your workforce.
- Confirm that security and data-governance controls permit the workflow.
- Expand the assignment only after the pilot is accepted.
Alternatives to enabling the policy
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Leave not configured | You accept Microsoft’s default availability and do not need an explicit control. | There is no clear allow or deny decision for future governance. |
| Set Disabled | You prohibit cross-device self-transfer or want an explicit block. | Users lose a convenient personal workflow. |
| Use Group Policy or MDM | Device-management systems are already the authoritative control plane. | Those policies can override cloud settings and complicate mixed-management troubleshooting. |
| Use an enterprise storage or transfer service | You need ownership, auditing, retention, DLP, or sharing permissions. | It is a different workflow from Drop’s lightweight self-transfer. |
Drop should not be presented as a replacement for SharePoint, OneDrive, or an enterprise file-transfer platform. Its documented purpose is sending a user’s own notes and files between signed-in Edge devices.
