On a Windows Server DHCP service, enable conflict detection with an elevated PowerShell session:

Get-DhcpServerSetting | Select-Object ConflictDetectionAttemptsA value of 1 makes one pre-lease check for an IPv4 address. Windows Server accepts values from 0 through 5; 0 is the default and disables the feature. The setting applies to the DHCP server generally, not to an individual scope.
What DHCP conflict detection does
Before leasing an IPv4 address, Windows DHCP can test whether the candidate address appears to be in use. If the check indicates that the address responds, DHCP should avoid offering it and record an event. Microsoft documents this behavior through EVENT_SERVER_PING_FAILED (event ID 1029), which indicates that the DHCP service could not successfully ping a new IP address.
This is a preventive, pre-lease check—not continuous conflict monitoring. It does not scan every address in a scope, repair an existing duplicate, or stop a second DHCP server from issuing leases.

Requirements and scope
- The Windows DHCP Server role must be installed.
- Use an elevated PowerShell session and an account permitted to administer DHCP.
- The
DhcpServerPowerShell module must be available. - The documented setting concerns Windows DHCP IPv4 leasing. It is not an IPv6 duplicate-address-detection control.
ConflictDetectionAttempts is a server-level parameter. Changing it affects allocations from that Windows DHCP server, including all of its scopes; it is not a normal scope option.
Enable and verify it with PowerShell
1. Inspect the current value

Microsoft documents the command and accepted range in the Set-DhcpServerSetting reference.
2. Set a starting value
Set-DhcpServerSetting -ConflictDetectionAttempts 1One attempt is a practical starting point for most networks and matches Microsoft’s documented example. It reduces the chance of assigning an address that is visibly in use without adding several checks to every allocation.

Select-Object ConflictDetectionAttemptsThe cmdlet documentation does not state that a DHCP service restart is required. Confirm the value after changing it and test a subsequent lease rather than restarting solely on the assumption that one is necessary.

Use the DHCP console (version-dependent)
On releases that expose the setting in the MMC console:
- Open Server Manager > Tools > DHCP.
- Right-click the DHCP server and select Properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Find Conflict detection attempts and enter a value from
1to5. - Select Apply or OK, then confirm the result with PowerShell.
Microsoft documents access to the DHCP console in its DHCP installation and configuration guide. The exact tab and label can vary by supported Windows Server release, so PowerShell is the more consistent method.
Choosing the number of attempts
Why start with 1
One attempt provides a basic safeguard with the least allocation delay. It is not a guarantee that every duplicate will be found.
When 2 through 5 may be reasonable
Consider a higher value when the network has recurring duplicate addresses, undocumented static devices, or frequently reused pools, and when slower lease allocation is acceptable. Each additional attempt can increase allocation latency. Microsoft documents the allowed range but does not prescribe a universal best value.
Check the event log
Open Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DHCP-Server. Event ID 1029 (EVENT_SERVER_PING_FAILED) relates to the DHCP service being unable to ping a new address. Microsoft’s event reference is available at DHCP Server events.

You can also query recent events, although the channel name should be confirmed on the target release:

Silent or unreachable devices
A static-IP device may be powered off, asleep, intermittently connected, protected by an ICMP-blocking firewall, or separated by routing controls when DHCP performs its check. No response does not prove that an address is unused.
Existing static addresses, reservations, and exclusions
Conflict detection acts before a new lease. Audit manually configured addresses, DHCP reservations, exclusions, and overlapping pools when a collision already exists. Enabling the setting does not reclaim a conflicted lease or change a static configuration.
Another DHCP server
A rogue or duplicate DHCP server can issue an address, gateway, or DNS configuration independently of the legitimate server’s address check. In an Active Directory environment, list authorized Windows DHCP servers with:

Relays and routed client networks
When DHCP clients are across a router or relay, validate server bindings, relay reachability, firewall rules, and the path between the server and client subnet. Microsoft’s DHCP server troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
DHCP failover partners
Failover shares scope information and lease state, but ConflictDetectionAttempts is a server-level setting. Check and configure both partners individually according to your operating procedure; do not assume changing one server changes its partner. See Microsoft’s DHCP failover documentation.
Troubleshooting commands and recovery
The cmdlet is not recognized
Check whether the module is present:
Get-Command -Module DhcpServerIf it is missing, install the DHCP role management tools appropriate to the Windows Server version and open a new PowerShell session. The DHCP deployment documentation identifies the management cmdlets.
Access is denied
Reopen PowerShell as administrator, use an account authorized to manage DHCP, and verify remoting and firewall policy for a remote target.
The value remains 0

Clients still receive duplicate addresses
- Confirm the conflict is IPv4; this setting does not cover IPv6.
- Determine whether the conflicting device can answer the server’s probe.
- Audit static addresses, reservations, exclusions, and overlapping scopes.
- Look for an unauthorized or second DHCP server.
- Verify relay reachability and firewall conditions.
- Review DHCP events and collect simultaneous client/server traces for difficult cases, following Microsoft’s DHCP client troubleshooting guidance.
Allocation becomes too slow
Reduce repeated checks to one while investigating the underlying address-management issue:
Set-DhcpServerSetting -ConflictDetectionAttempts 1More attempts provide more opportunities to detect a responding device, but they can delay assignment and still cannot detect silent or unreachable hosts.
What this setting does not replace
- Accurate IP address management and documented static assignments.
- Correct reservations, exclusions, and non-overlapping scopes.
- Rogue-DHCP detection and switch or wireless-network controls.
- DHCP failover, which improves service availability but is not conflict detection.
- IPv6 duplicate-address mechanisms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does conflict detection apply to only one DHCP scope?
No. ConflictDetectionAttempts is a server-level Windows DHCP setting, so changing it affects address allocation across that server’s scopes.

Does this setting detect IPv6 duplicates?
No. Microsoft documents this setting for IPv4 DHCP leasing. IPv6 uses different address-configuration and duplicate-address-detection mechanisms.
Will enabling it fix an existing duplicate IP address?
No. It checks candidate addresses before new leases; it does not repair static-address collisions, incorrect reservations, or leases already in conflict.
What should I do if duplicate addresses continue?
Check for silent devices, static addresses, reservation or exclusion errors, relay and firewall problems, and unauthorized DHCP servers. Review DHCP events and capture client/server traces when necessary.
