To make browsing darker on an Android phone or tablet, start in Chrome: open Chrome, tap More (three dots) → Settings → Theme, then choose Dark. Choose System Default if Chrome should follow Android’s dark theme or Battery Saver. This changes Chrome’s interface and some pages, but it does not guarantee that every third-party website will turn dark.
Android’s device-wide dark theme and Google Search’s separate appearance control affect different parts of the experience. Use the setting that matches what remains bright.
Choose the setting that matches what you want dark

Android manufacturers rename or rearrange menu items, so your phone may show slightly different labels. The scopes above are separate: turning on one does not automatically force every page into the same color scheme.
Turn on Chrome’s dark theme
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More, the three-dot button in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Theme.
- Select Dark to keep Chrome in its dark theme.
Chrome’s documented theme setting darkens its homepage, toolbar, settings and some other Chrome pages. It is a browser-interface preference, not a universal “darken every website” switch. A site with its own light-only design may continue to display a white background.

Dark versus System Default
- Dark: Chrome stays dark even when Android itself is using a light theme.
- System Default: Chrome follows Android’s dark theme, and Chrome Help also documents Battery Saver as a condition that can make Chrome use its dark appearance.
- Light: Chrome uses its light browser theme.
Use System Default when you want one device setting to control Chrome. Use Dark when Chrome should remain dark regardless of the phone’s schedule or current theme.
Turn on Android’s system dark theme
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Display.
- Turn on Dark theme (the wording can vary by manufacturer).
This changes Android’s interface and can change supported apps. Chrome can follow it when its own Theme setting is System Default. A website viewed in Chrome still controls its own page colors, so the system switch alone cannot guarantee a dark webpage.
Android 16 expanded darkening
Current Android Accessibility guidance describes an expanded dark-theme option on Android 16 and newer. When available, it can automatically darken interfaces for many apps that do not provide a native dark theme. It is broader than a simple app preference, but it is not a promise that every web page will be redesigned correctly.
Expanded darkening can change the appearance of images and make some text less legible. If a particular app or page looks damaged, disable the expanded option or use that app’s own appearance control instead.
Make Google Search pages dark
Google Search has its own appearance setting. If Chrome is dark but Google’s homepage or results are still bright:

- Tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Find Appearance.
- Choose Dark theme.
The available choices are Device default, Dark theme and Light theme. This preference controls Google Search pages, including the homepage, results and Search settings. When you are signed in, Google says the preference can persist across mobile devices.
Why is Chrome dark but the website still white?
Chrome’s dark theme and a site’s design are different layers. Chrome can darken its own controls while leaving a third-party page untouched because the website may not provide dark styling or may not honor the browser’s preferred color scheme. Android’s system dark theme has the same boundary.
Check the site’s own control
Look for a moon icon, a Theme menu, or an Appearance item in the site’s navigation, profile menu or settings. A site-provided dark mode is usually the most reliable way to preserve its intended colors, images and contrast.

Chrome for Developers described an Auto Dark Theme origin trial and an experimental flag in a 2021 article. That historical material is not verified current setup guidance. Do not assume an old flag or checkbox is present in your current Chrome release, and avoid treating it as a supported universal switch.
Color inversion: a last-resort accessibility option
Android’s color inversion changes all displayed content, including photos, videos and other media. It is useful when you need broadly inverted pixels, but it is not the same as a web page designed with a dark color palette. Skin tones, logos, charts and contrast can look incorrect, and legibility may worsen.

Open your device’s accessibility settings to find Color inversion; the exact path and label vary by Android version and manufacturer. Prefer a site’s own dark mode, Chrome’s theme, or Android’s dark theme first. Turn inversion off when it makes images or text harder to understand.
What developers should know about embedded WebView
If you are building an Android app rather than browsing in Chrome, Android WebView has different behavior. Android Developers documents that WebView may use a page’s prefers-color-scheme styling, or may algorithmically darken content when the host app permits it and the page does not opt out. The conditions depend on the Android and API target.

A WebView embedded in one app can look dark while the same URL in Chrome remains light, or the reverse, because the host app and page negotiate darkening differently.
Troubleshooting checklist
Chrome’s menus do not match
- Update Chrome from Google Play, then reopen it.
- Look under More → Settings for Theme; manufacturer skins do not normally rename Chrome’s internal menu, but older versions may place options differently.
- If the option is missing, use Android’s system dark theme and check whether your Chrome version supports the documented control.
Only some pages are dark
- Confirm Chrome is set to Dark or System Default.
- Check the website for its own theme switch.
- Accept that a site without dark styling may remain light; there is no current, documented Chrome consumer switch that guarantees recoloring every third-party site.
Google Search remains light
Set Google Search separately: Google → More → Settings → Appearance → Dark theme. If you choose Device default, verify Android’s system theme is dark.
Dark mode turns off unexpectedly
Chrome set to System Default follows Android’s theme and may respond to Battery Saver. Choose Dark for a fixed Chrome theme, or change Android’s schedule and Battery Saver behavior.

Images or text look distorted after expanded darkening or inversion
Disable the expanded dark-theme option for the affected app, or turn off color inversion. Then use the website’s native dark mode if available. These broad transformations can change image colors and contrast by design.

Private browser extensions, content scripts and site code can override colors. Test the same URL in another tab or browser, clear site data only if you understand the sign-in consequences, and contact the site owner if its theme control is broken. Android and Chrome settings cannot repair a page that deliberately fixes a light palette.
