On desktop, start with Chrome’s Customize Chrome → Appearance → Dark; on Android, use Chrome → More → Settings → Theme → Dark. Fire tablets can darken Silk’s menus and tabs, but not the web pages you visit. If Amazon remains bright, an Amazon-specific dark-mode extension is the practical workaround.
What dark mode can—and cannot—change on Amazon
Amazon’s storefront, account pages and checkout do not share a reliably documented native dark-mode control. A dark browser or device theme may change the browser interface and any page components that support the setting, but it does not automatically recolor every Amazon page.
Think of the display as separate layers:
- Browser chrome: tabs, menus, address bar and settings.
- Operating-system theme: controls whether compatible apps and browsers follow Light or Dark.
- Amazon page content: HTML, images and controls delivered by Amazon, which must support dark styling itself or be modified by an extension.
That separation explains why Chrome can look black while Amazon remains white.
Enable dark mode on Amazon with desktop Chrome
- Open a new Chrome tab.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner. In some Chrome versions, the same controls are available from the side panel.
- Under Appearance, choose Dark. Choose Device if Chrome should follow your computer’s system theme.
- Return to Amazon and refresh the page. Reopen the tab if the interface does not update immediately.
What to expect
This setting reliably darkens Chrome’s own interface. It can also affect websites that implement browser or system theme support. It is not a command to invert every Amazon color, so product pages, search results or checkout may stay light.

Enable dark mode on Android Chrome
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Theme.
- Select Dark for a permanent dark Chrome interface, or System Default to follow Android’s current theme. Light is the third option.
- Return to Amazon and refresh the page.
Android Chrome’s theme choice does not guarantee dark Amazon content. It may darken Chrome while Amazon’s own page background, cards and menus remain unchanged.
Use the dark theme in Amazon Silk on a Fire tablet
Silk includes Dark Theme and Light Theme choices for Silk’s tabs and menus. Select Silk’s Dark Theme in the browser settings, then return to Amazon.
Amazon explicitly warns: “Note: The background color of the web pages you visit won’t change.” In other words, Silk’s controls can be dark while Amazon’s page is still white. That is expected behavior, not a failed setting.

Make Amazon pages dark with a Chrome extension
When built-in themes leave the storefront bright, a third-party extension that targets Amazon pages is the most direct desktop workaround. The Chrome Web Store listing for Amazon Dark Mode says it is designed for desktop Amazon browsing and can switch the theme with one click. The listing was published or updated on January 22, 2026.
Before installing any extension:
- Confirm the publisher name and read the privacy disclosure.
- Review requested permissions, especially access to data on Amazon pages.
- Check recent ratings and reviews for your Chrome version.
- Install only from the official Chrome Web Store listing, not an executable downloaded from an unrelated site.
- Test product pages, account pages and checkout separately; a theme that works on search results may not style every Amazon surface.
Because extensions can change as their permissions, code or compatibility changes, review them after major browser updates and remove one you no longer trust.
Which approach should you choose?
| Approach | What becomes dark | Setup effort | Privacy and maintenance | How easily you can undo it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop Chrome: Customize Chrome → Appearance → Dark | Chrome interface and supported page elements | Built-in setting | No third-party software; maintained by Chrome | Switch back to Light or Device |
| Android Chrome: Settings → Theme → Dark | Chrome interface and supported page elements | Built-in setting | No extension permissions | Choose Light or System Default |
| Fire tablet Silk: Dark Theme | Silk tabs and menus, not visited page backgrounds | Built-in setting | No extension permissions | Choose Light Theme |
| Amazon Dark Mode extension | Amazon page styling targeted by the extension | Install and enable an extension | Requires permission and publisher review; compatibility can change | Disable or uninstall the extension |
Why Amazon is still white: troubleshooting
Chrome is dark, but Amazon is unchanged
That usually means you changed Chrome’s interface theme rather than Amazon’s page styling. Confirm that Appearance is set to Dark, refresh Amazon, and then use an Amazon-specific extension if the page itself remains light.

Only some Amazon components changed
Different Amazon surfaces can use different styles. A search page, product detail page, account area and checkout may respond differently. Test the exact page you use instead of assuming that one successful page proves site-wide support.
Android follows the wrong color
If Chrome is set to System Default, check Android’s system theme. Select Chrome’s explicit Dark option when you want Chrome dark regardless of the device schedule, then reload Amazon.
Silk menus are dark but the page is white
This is Silk’s documented behavior. Its Dark Theme applies to browser controls; it does not change the background color of visited web pages. Use a page-targeting extension in a supported browser if you need Amazon content recolored.

An extension does not style every page
Check whether the extension is enabled for the current Amazon domain, reload the tab after installation, and review its listing for compatibility notes. If one page breaks, disable the extension temporarily to determine whether it caused the problem. Do not grant broader permissions than you need.
Amazon looks dark, but text or images are hard to read
Theme extensions can alter contrast, icons and image backgrounds. Try the extension’s own toggle or disable it for that page. Keep Chrome’s built-in theme separate from an extension while troubleshooting so you can identify which layer changed the colors.
Privacy and maintenance checklist
- Prefer Chrome, Android or Silk’s built-in theme when darkening the browser interface is sufficient.
- For page-level changes, install only a well-maintained extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Read permissions before installation and after updates.
- Do not enter Amazon credentials into an extension’s settings or a page that is not clearly Amazon.
- Keep a quick disable path available so you can restore the original page if checkout or account controls become unreadable.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a dark Amazon screenshot for documentation, testing or an AI workflow rather than a permanently themed browser, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one API request. Its dark-mode option can be combined with full-page capture, a device preset, a custom viewport, retina scale, waits for selectors or network idle, custom CSS, hidden selectors and other capture controls. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter list.

FAQ
Amazon’s regular website does not have a consistently documented native dark-mode switch in the material reviewed. Chrome and Silk themes therefore affect different layers, and an Amazon-targeting extension is needed when the page itself must be recolored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the theme of Amazon Music in its browser player?
An Amazon staff response dated July 9, 2024 said there was currently no way to change the Amazon Music app theme from within the app or for browser streaming. The response also noted that an Android device’s dark mode affected apps in that case; this is specific to Amazon Music, not a promise about every Amazon service.
Is there a reliable statistic showing that Amazon dark mode saves battery or prevents eye strain?
No authoritative, topic-specific statistic about Amazon dark-mode adoption, eye strain or battery savings was established. Treat dark mode as a personal readability preference rather than a guaranteed health or battery result.
