If you’re visiting a site, your device’s dark-mode setting only affects pages that support it; for other pages, a browser force-dark feature or extension may help, but can distort colors and images.
What dark mode on a web page actually means
There are two different ways a page can become dark. In a site-authored theme, the site provides a dark palette and can respond to a visitor’s preference. In a forced theme, a browser or extension tries to alter a page that was not designed for dark mode. The first gives the site control over text, backgrounds, links, images, and controls. The second is a reader-side workaround, and its results depend on the page and browser.
For site authors, the main building blocks are the prefers-color-scheme media feature, CSS color variables, and the color-scheme property. For readers, the key point is that turning on dark mode in a phone or computer does not automatically rewrite every website’s colors.
If you’re a reader: try the site and browser settings
Check whether the site offers its own theme
Look for a sun, moon, or theme control in the page header, menu, or account settings. A site-provided switch is usually the best choice because the site can select colors that suit its own layout and content. Some sites follow your device preference automatically; others offer a manual choice or no dark theme at all.

Set a dark preference on your device
Enable dark appearance in your operating system or browser settings. A website that supports the preference can then select its dark CSS using prefers-color-scheme: dark. The preference is a signal to the page, not an instruction that forces every page to recolor itself.
Use force-dark only when the page has no theme
Some browsers and extensions offer a feature that attempts to darken pages regardless of whether the site authored a dark palette. Its name and availability vary by browser and version, so check the browser’s own settings or extension listing. Because this method modifies colors rather than using a page’s intended theme, photographs, logos, charts, SVG artwork, and colored interface elements may look wrong. If text becomes hard to read or imagery is altered, turn the feature off for that page or use the site’s own theme instead.
If you’re a site author: follow the system preference
Define light colors as the default, then override the same variables inside a dark-preference media query. This lets one stylesheet serve both appearances while keeping the actual palette under your control.
<head>
<meta name="color-scheme" content="light dark">
<style>
:root {
color-scheme: light dark;
--bg: #ffffff;
--fg: #111111;
--link: #0645ad;
}
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
:root {
--bg: #111111;
--fg: #eeeeee;
--link: #8ab4f8;
}
}
body {
background: var(--bg);
color: var(--fg);
}
a { color: var(--link); }
</style>
</head>
The prefers-color-scheme media feature detects a light or dark preference supplied by the operating system or user agent; it does not generate suitable dark colors for you. The CSS variables in the example provide the two palettes, and the browser selects the dark values when the preference matches. MDN marks prefers-color-scheme widely available across browsers since January 2020.

Tell the browser which schemes the page supports
The color-scheme declaration communicates that the document can render in light and dark schemes. It can help browser-provided interface elements, such as scrollbars and form controls, match the selected scheme. The CSS property and document-level meta declaration serve related purposes: the property describes the supported scheme in CSS, while the meta element communicates support early to the user agent. That early signal can help avoid a flash of controls in the wrong scheme during page load. MDN marks the property widely available across browsers since January 2022.
Declare both light and dark only if your page is prepared to render acceptably in both. The declaration does not replace your site’s background, text, or link styles: provide those explicitly, as in the example.
How to add a manual light/dark/system toggle
A manual toggle is separate from automatic system synchronization. A useful three-state control lets visitors choose “System,” “Light,” or “Dark.” Store an explicit choice, and use the system preference only when the stored choice is “system” or no choice exists. This prevents a saved manual selection from being silently overwritten by the operating system setting.
Use a theme attribute and variables
Keep the palette in CSS variables, then set an attribute on the root element for an explicit override. Here is a compact example that remembers a selection in local storage and includes a system option:

const saved = localStorage.getItem('theme');

choice.addEventListener('change', () => applyTheme(choice.value));
toggle.addEventListener('click', () => {
applyTheme(root.dataset.theme === 'dark' ? 'light' : 'dark');
});
</script>
The select makes the system choice explicit; when it is selected, removing the attribute lets the media query take effect. The button is a shortcut that switches between explicit light and dark choices. You can omit the button if your interface only needs the three-option selector. MDN’s User Preferences API page includes a minimal JavaScript toggle example.
For a production site, consider whether the control should expose its current state to assistive technology, whether a visitor’s selection should persist across visits, and how to handle storage being unavailable. If local storage access fails, fall back to the system preference rather than preventing the page from rendering.
Check the parts of the page CSS variables don’t fix by themselves
A theme is more than the body background and text color. Review the full page in both schemes, including:
- Headings, body text, links, visited links, focus indicators, and disabled text.
- Form fields, placeholders, borders, validation states, and browser-native controls.
- Cards, separators, shadows, overlays, menus, and modal backdrops.
- Images, logos, icons, SVGs, charts, and any content with its own background color.
- Scrollbars and embedded content, which may have styling or appearance rules of their own.
A light logo can disappear on a dark background, while a dark logo can disappear on a light one. Supply theme-appropriate assets when needed, or give the asset a background that remains legible. Do not assume that changing the page’s main foreground and background colors makes every component readable.

Troubleshooting dark mode
The page stays light when the device is in dark mode
If you own the site, check that the dark palette is actually inside @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark), and that the relevant elements use the variables or rules being overridden. If you are a visitor, the site may not support the preference; use its own theme control if available, or try a browser force-dark feature with the understanding that it may alter content incorrectly.
Browser controls change but the page background does not
color-scheme helps the browser choose appearances for its own controls, but it is not a substitute for page-authored background, text, and link styles. Define those styles for both schemes.
The page flashes in the wrong scheme before changing
Place the color-scheme meta declaration in the document head so the browser sees the page’s scheme support early. Also ensure the initial theme decision is made before rendering styles that depend on a saved manual choice. A system-following page can rely on the media query; a page with a stored override needs to apply that override consistently during startup.
A saved toggle seems to ignore system changes
That is expected when the visitor has made an explicit light or dark choice. Provide a “System” option that clears the explicit override so the media preference can control the appearance again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does dark mode automatically make a web page use dark colors?
No. The system preference is a signal that a page can respond to; the page needs its own dark styles unless a browser or extension forcibly alters it.
Can a website let me choose dark mode even if my device is set to light?
Yes. A site can add a manual theme control that applies an explicit dark theme independently of the system preference.
