You can enable an HP laptop’s built-in webcam in BIOS only if that model’s firmware includes a camera setting. On supported systems, look under Configuration > Built-in Device Options for Integrated Camera or Camera, set it to Enabled, then save and exit. The option is not available on every HP computer; if it is missing, check the camera shutter, Windows permissions, and Device Manager instead.
Before opening BIOS, check the quick fixes
A closed privacy shutter or disabled camera key can look like a software failure. These checks are faster and safer than changing firmware settings.
- Open the shutter: Look for a slider beside or above the lens, or a privacy switch on the laptop’s side.
- Check the keyboard: Look for a key with a camera icon. Press it, or try it with Fn if the action key does not respond. Indicator-light behavior varies by model, so use the camera icon and your model’s guide rather than assuming the light always means on or off.
- Test in Windows Camera: Open Start, search for Camera, and launch the app. A live preview shows that Windows can use the camera; if it works there but not in one program, investigate that program’s permissions and camera selection.
- Check Windows 11 permissions: Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and Let desktop apps access your camera. If a control is unavailable, an administrator or organization policy may manage it.

How to enable the webcam in HP BIOS
These steps apply only when the computer’s BIOS provides a camera control. Menu names and key behavior vary by HP model and BIOS version.

- Save your work, then restart the computer or shut it down and power it on.
- As the HP logo appears, repeatedly press Esc to open the Startup Menu. On some systems, repeatedly pressing F10 immediately after power-on opens BIOS Setup directly.
- From the Startup Menu, press F10 for BIOS Setup. If the key does not work, try holding Fn while pressing it; keyboard action-key settings can affect function keys.
- In BIOS Setup, look for Configuration > Built-in Device Options.
- Find Integrated Camera, Camera, or a similarly named entry, such as Webcam or Internal Camera. If present, change it from Disabled to Enabled.
- Select Exit > Save Changes and Exit, then confirm if prompted. Allow Windows to start.
- Open Start > Camera and check for a live preview.
HP documents the Configuration > Built-in Device Options path for systems that expose a camera setting in its BIOS camera guidance. If you made no changes, choose Ignore Changes and Exit rather than saving unrelated settings.
Do not change boot mode, Secure Boot, storage-controller mode, virtualization, or other unrelated BIOS options while troubleshooting the camera. If Esc and F10 do not open Setup, start pressing the key immediately after pressing the power button, try a wired keyboard if the built-in keyboard is unresponsive, or consult the guide for your exact model. You can also try Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings, if that option is available.

If there is no camera setting in BIOS
Some HP computers do not offer a BIOS webcam toggle. Its absence alone does not mean the camera is broken, and there is no universal setting to enable on every Pavilion, ENVY, Spectre, Victus, EliteBook, or ProBook. The same caution applies to HP desktops, All-in-One computers, and monitors with integrated cameras: check the documentation for the exact product.
Check whether Windows sees the camera
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras. If it is not listed there, check Imaging devices and Sound, video and game controllers; the category depends on the model and driver.
- If the camera appears, right-click it. Enable device means it is currently disabled; if the menu offers Disable device, Windows already considers it enabled.
- If the camera is absent, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes, then restart Windows and check the categories again.
Install the model-specific camera driver
Use the HP support page for the computer’s exact product number to check for the appropriate camera driver. Install it, restart, and test again. HP Support Assistant can also identify updates for supported Windows systems; HP notes that it may not be available in Windows S mode, where Windows Update may be the alternative. Avoid replacing a specialized camera driver with the generic USB Video Class driver unless necessary: basic video may return, but manufacturer features such as Windows Hello facial recognition can be lost.

If the camera worked before a Windows update and failed immediately afterward, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide describes driver rollback and reinstall options. If it remains absent after scanning and installing the correct driver, the cause could still be a privacy control, internal connection, or hardware fault—not necessarily BIOS.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
Windows says no cameras are attached
Error 0xA00F4244 indicates Windows cannot detect a camera. Check the physical privacy controls, verify that the integrated camera is enabled in BIOS if the option exists, then inspect Device Manager and install the model-specific driver. The code is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis.

The camera appears, but the preview is black
Open the shutter and make sure nothing covers the lens. Close other programs that may be using the camera, then test again in Windows Camera. If the preview works there, select the correct camera in Zoom, Teams, or your browser. Also check whether privacy or antivirus software is blocking access. Errors 0xA00F4243 and 0xA00F4289 can indicate another process is using the camera, but they do not prove it is the cause.

It works in Camera but not in a meeting app
The built-in camera and BIOS are less likely to be the issue if the Windows Camera app shows a live preview. Check the meeting app’s selected device and its permission to use the camera. For desktop applications, confirm that Let desktop apps access your camera is on. Error 0x80070005 can point to denied access; 0xA00F4292 can indicate access restricted by policy. On a work-managed computer, contact the organization’s IT administrator.

You are troubleshooting a USB webcam
The BIOS setting described here is for a built-in camera; it generally does not enable an external USB webcam. Check its cable, try another USB port, and follow the webcam manufacturer’s driver instructions.

Reset BIOS defaults only as a considered last resort
HP’s BIOS camera guidance includes a BIOS reset among possible steps when a camera is installed but no camera entry appears. Before loading Setup Defaults, record or photograph any custom settings. Defaults can change boot, security, virtualization, or storage configuration, so this is not a routine first step. Save the change and restart only if you understand the possible effect on your setup.
Update BIOS only when the exact model warrants it
A BIOS update is not a guaranteed webcam fix. Consider one if HP’s support page lists a camera-related correction, HP Support Assistant offers a relevant update for the exact computer, broader firmware or device-detection problems are present, or HP support recommends it. Keep the AC adapter connected during an update, and do not install firmware for a different model.

When to seek repair
If the built-in camera remains absent from both BIOS (where a camera option should exist) and Device Manager after checking privacy controls, scanning for hardware changes, and installing the correct driver, run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and use its webcam connection test if available. A persistent detection failure may require service for an internal connection or camera module. If repair is impractical, an external USB webcam is a separate workaround; confirm warranty coverage and model-specific repair guidance before opening the display assembly.
