To connect a coding agent to a Next.js development app, use Next.js 16 or later, add the next-devtools-mcp server to a project-root .mcp.json, start the development server, and make sure your agent has loaded that configuration. The connection exposes development-time app context—such as errors, logs, routes, and project metadata—to the agent. A root AGENTS.md serves a different purpose: it can direct the agent to documentation bundled with the version of Next.js installed in the project.
What Next.js MCP does—and what it does not do
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is “an open standard that allows AI agents and coding assistants to interact with your applications through a standardized interface,” as the Next.js MCP Server guide puts it. In this setup, the agent can ask a running Next.js development server for relevant development information rather than relying only on the code it can read.
The documented workflow is for a running development instance. The guide describes a built-in MCP endpoint at /_next/mcp in Next.js 16 and later; the next-devtools-mcp package discovers available endpoints and forwards tool calls to the appropriate development server. Do not read this as unrestricted access to a production deployment: the documented setup connects the agent to the development server you start for the project.
Requirements before you configure it
- Next.js 16 or later: this is the requirement stated by the MCP guide.
- A project-root configuration: create or edit
.mcp.jsonat the root of the project, alongside the project’s other top-level configuration files. - A running development server: the package discovers a running Next.js instance. For example, start one with
pnpm dev. - An MCP-compatible coding agent: the agent must support MCP and load the project’s MCP configuration.
Check the actual installed Next.js version in the project before proceeding. The AI Coding Agents guide separately gives a version qualifier for its documented bundled-docs setup: for an existing project, its example says to use Next.js v16.2.0-canary.37 or later. That qualifier belongs to the guide’s AGENTS.md documentation workflow; it is not a replacement for the MCP guide’s stated Next.js 16-or-later requirement.

Configure the MCP server in the project
- Open the project root. Place
.mcp.jsonthere, not in a nested application directory, unless that nested directory is itself the project root your coding agent opens. - Add the server entry. Use this JSON configuration:

}- Save valid JSON. Keep the quotes and braces intact; do not add comments, since JSON does not support them.
- Start Next.js in development mode. From the project root, run the development command used by your project, such as
pnpm dev, and leave it running. - Load the project in your coding agent. Confirm that the agent has read the project’s MCP configuration. If the development server was already running when you added the configuration, restart it, then have the agent reconnect or reload the project configuration.
The package is invoked through npx using the @latest package tag shown in the official example. The guide does not require manually adding a separate URL for /_next/mcp to this client configuration; it describes the package as discovering and connecting to the running instance.
What the agent can query after connecting
The Next.js guide documents tools and development capabilities that make live project context available to an agent. The exact interface presented can depend on the MCP client, but the documented tool purposes include:

The guide also describes live runtime queries, access to development logs, and browser-testing integration. These are development tools for supplying app context; they do not mean an agent can bypass your normal application permissions or safely make arbitrary changes without review.
Use AGENTS.md to keep framework guidance version-matched
MCP and AGENTS.md solve separate problems. MCP supplies information from the live development app. An agent instruction file can tell the coding agent where to find reliable framework documentation before it writes or changes code.

The Next.js AI Coding Agents guide says documentation is bundled with the installed next package under node_modules/next/dist/docs/. For an existing project, add or review a root AGENTS.md instruction such as:
Before any Next.js work, find and read the relevant doc in
node_modules/next/dist/docs/. Your training data is outdated —
the docs are the source of truth.This wording is the example instruction in the official guide. It directs the agent to documentation in the project’s installed package rather than assuming online examples or model knowledge match the version in use. Make sure dependencies have been installed so that the bundled documentation path exists.

The guide says create-next-app generates AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md automatically. It also explains that CLAUDE.md can import the shared instruction file with @AGENTS.md. Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot are named in the guide as examples of agents that automatically read AGENTS.md; exact behavior still depends on the client and its project configuration.

- Confirm the installed Next.js version meets the MCP guide’s Next.js 16-or-later requirement.
- Add the documented
next-devtoolsentry to.mcp.jsonat the project root. - Add or review root
AGENTS.mdso the agent is instructed to consult relevant bundled Next.js documentation. - Start the project’s development server from the root, for example with
pnpm dev. - Open or reload the project in the coding agent and verify that it has loaded the MCP configuration.
- Ask for a focused development-context query, such as the current errors or project metadata, to confirm the connection is useful.
The Next.js 16 upgrade guide also shows the same .mcp.json setup in the context of using DevTools MCP to help with an upgrade. The MCP server can therefore be relevant during migration work as well as ordinary development, provided the documented version and running-server conditions are met.

Why the MCP connection may not appear
- The project is on an earlier Next.js version. Check the version actually installed for the project, not just the version you intended to install. The MCP guide requires Next.js 16 or later.
.mcp.jsonis in the wrong directory. Put the file at the project root that the coding agent has opened, and check that the JSON matches the documentedmcpServersstructure.- The development server is not running. Start it from the project root and wait for it to finish starting. The package connects to a running development instance.
- The server predates the configuration. If you added the MCP setup while Next.js was already running, restart the development server and reconnect the client.
- The coding agent has not loaded the file. Reload or reopen the project using the client’s supported configuration-refresh process, and verify that the MCP server appears as available in that client.
- The agent is looking at a different project root. Check that the directory opened in the agent is the same one containing the Next.js app and
.mcp.json.
Once connected, use a documented query such as get_project_metadata or get_errors as a practical check. If the configuration is visible but no app context is returned, verify that the development process is healthy and that the client is attached to the intended project.

Does enabling MCP change how my app behaves for ordinary visitors?
The documented setup is for a development server and adds an agent-facing development connection. The cited guide does not describe it as a production feature for visitors.
Does AGENTS.md replace the MCP configuration?
No. The two are complementary: one guides the agent to version-matched framework documentation, while the other connects it to live development information.
Can I use this setup while upgrading to Next.js 16?
The Next.js 16 upgrade guide documents DevTools MCP as an aid for upgrade and migration work and uses the same project-root MCP entry.
