To show Tripadvisor reviews for a business or destination on a WordPress site, generate a personalized widget in Tripadvisor’s Widget Center and add its code to a compatible HTML or code area. If WordPress strips the code or you want a shortcode-based setup, a WordPress plugin is another option. Tripadvisor’s documented widgets are for business and destination listings; the sources do not establish an official widget for displaying an individual traveler’s personal review history.

Choose the right kind of Tripadvisor widget

Tripadvisor’s Widget Center lets you find a business or destination, choose a widget, and generate personalized code. Depending on the available widget, it can show a rating, recent review excerpts, awards, or a link to the listing. Tripadvisor describes widget content as updating automatically and the widget as a small code snippet for an HTML-based page. See Tripadvisor’s widget resource for current choices.

This route is intended for a business or destination listing, not a personal portfolio of reviews written by an individual traveler. An older Tripadvisor Support Forum thread titled “Tripadvisor plugin for wordpress” asked about displaying an author’s own contributed reviews and received an answer distinguishing those from business-owner widgets. Because that forum answer is dated, treat it as historical guidance rather than current policy; the official widget resource describes business and destination widgets.

Use Tripadvisor’s Widget Center code in WordPress

  1. Check eligibility. Confirm that the listing is for the business or destination and that your site fits Tripadvisor’s current Widget Terms of Use. The terms define a “Qualified Website” to include a personal, noncommercial journal or diary, a site primarily related to travel that offers travel-related goods or services, or a destination marketing organization.
  2. Generate the widget. Open Tripadvisor’s Widget Center, enter the business or destination name, choose a widget, and copy its personalized code.
  3. Add the code using a suitable WordPress area. Use an HTML- or code-capable area available to your account and site configuration. WordPress does not accept arbitrary embed URLs by default, and its embed handling applies security filtering; whether a snippet is retained can depend on your permissions, editor, plugins, host, and configuration. WordPress explains the whitelist and filtering behavior in its oEmbed documentation.
  4. Preview or publish, then verify it. Check that the widget renders on the page rather than appearing as code or disappearing. If it fails, use the troubleshooting checks below and check whether WordPress or your host is stripping or restricting the code.

Use a WordPress plugin and shortcode instead

The WordPress.org directory lists Trustindex WP Tripadvisor Review Widgets as an alternative. Its documented workflow is to install and activate the plugin, connect the Tripadvisor company profile, choose a layout or style, configure available filters, and insert the generated shortcode where the widget should appear.

At the time the directory was checked on September 30, 2026, its listing showed version 14.2, 20,000+ active installations, WordPress 6.2 or later, PHP 7.4 or later, and testing up to WordPress 7.1.2. These are changeable directory details, not evidence that the plugin works on every setup. The listing says a widget can be claimed without a subscription while also offering premium features; check the current listing and the in-plugin offer for present compatibility, feature limits, and pricing.

Compare the two setup routes

Route Setup What to consider
Tripadvisor Widget Center Generate official code for a business or destination widget and add it to a compatible HTML area. Tripadvisor offers free business and destination widget categories. Keep the official widget intact; its terms restrict modifying or separating its components.
Trustindex WP Tripadvisor Review Widgets Install the plugin, connect a Tripadvisor company profile, configure a display, and insert its shortcode. Check current WordPress and PHP compatibility, available display controls, feature limits, and pricing. It is third-party software, not Tripadvisor’s own Widget Center code.

The useful deciding factors are whether you want Tripadvisor-generated code or a plugin-managed shortcode, which display controls you need, whether the option fits your WordPress and PHP setup, and whether your goal is a business or destination listing. Neither route is established as universally better.

Keep the widget and review content within Tripadvisor’s terms

Tripadvisor’s widget terms prohibit copying, extracting, or summarizing widget content outside the widget and specifically prohibit displaying Tripadvisor ratings or reviews outside it. They also say not to modify or disassemble the widget, obscure its notices, or imply that Tripadvisor endorses your site. Review the live terms before publishing because they can change.

Use Tripadvisor’s generated widget intact, or choose a plugin only after reviewing its terms and data source. Do not scrape Tripadvisor pages or manually copy reviews into a custom block as a substitute for the documented widget.

Troubleshoot a widget that does not appear

Tripadvisor’s widget guidance recommends checking the code and page markup. In particular:

  • Put the code in the page source or a suitable code area, not in visible page text.
  • Check that the page uses valid HTML and that every tag is closed.
  • Keep the script tag on one line.
  • Confirm that the badge includes a div followed by a script tag, in that order.
  • Check that the script retains its &lang= parameter; Tripadvisor notes it can be corrupted into a left-angle bracket.

If the code appears correct but WordPress removes it, check the account’s permissions and the editor, plugin, hosting, and security configuration. WordPress’s oEmbed documentation says that only whitelisted providers are embedded by default and that discovered HTML or video is restricted and sandboxed. The shortcode plugin may offer a more guided configuration, but its compatibility and current feature availability still need to suit your site.
