To embed a social media post in WordPress, copy the post’s share URL, add the matching service block (or the generic Embed block), paste the URL, and select Embed. WordPress loads the post from the social network; it does not upload the media to your WordPress Media Library. Publish or preview the page, then check the result on the front end.
Embed one social media post in WordPress
- Copy the real post URL. Open the post on its social platform and use its Share or Copy link command. Copy the URL for that individual post, video, reel, or playlist—not a profile or search-results URL.
- Open the WordPress editor. Edit the page or post where the item should appear and click the + inserter.
- Choose a block. Select the provider-specific block when WordPress lists one. If there is no suitable block, search for Embed. You can also type
/embedin a paragraph and press Enter to insert the generic Embed block. WordPress documents the general workflow in its Embeds guide and Embed block guide. - Paste and embed. Paste the URL into the block and select Embed. Wait for the preview to load.
- Preview as a visitor. Use WordPress’s page preview and then open the published or preview URL in a separate browser window. The editor preview can differ from the final page, and a provider can change visibility or embed rules.
If WordPress rejects the URL or the published page shows no post, use a normal text link to the post. A link is more reliable than promising that every social URL will render as an embedded card.
Which WordPress block should you use?
| Choice | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Service-specific block | A supported provider such as YouTube, TikTok, Bluesky, or X | Usually gives the clearest provider-specific controls, but it still depends on the post being eligible and the provider’s current embed service. |
| Generic Embed block | A provider without a visible dedicated block, or a quick compatibility test | Paste the URL and choose Embed. Unsupported URLs remain a plain link or produce an error. |
| Plain link | Posts that are private, blocked, unstable, or unsuitable for third-party loading | Works without loading the provider’s embedded scripts and is the dependable fallback. |
WordPress’s supported-provider list changes. Its easy embed feature relies largely on oEmbed: WordPress asks a provider for the HTML needed to display external content. A provider can remove support, change an endpoint, or impose account, location, and privacy requirements even when a block is listed.
Platform-specific requirements
Only public Instagram posts are eligible for WordPress’s Instagram embedding workflow. WordPress also documents that Facebook closed the former Instagram/Facebook oEmbed endpoint and that the authenticated route requires a developer account, an app ID, and an authentication token. The Instagram embed documentation contains older instructions, so treat them as conditional rather than proof that every Instagram URL works in core WordPress. Test the actual public URL and check Instagram’s current provider requirements.
#1 Best Overall
Facebook posts must be public for the Facebook block. WordPress notes that Facebook pages, events, and groups cannot be embedded through that block, and its documentation also flags the closed oEmbed endpoint and authentication requirements. Because parts of the block guidance describe an older interface, current Facebook endpoint and account rules determine whether a particular post renders. If it fails, publish the post URL as a normal link.
YouTube
The video owner must allow embedding; country restrictions can also prevent playback. WordPress’s YouTube guidance states that private videos cannot be embedded, while public and unlisted videos and playlists are supported when the publisher permits embedding. WordPress also warns that viewing a YouTube embed shares non-personally identifying viewing data with YouTube and the publisher. Consider a regular link if that third-party loading or data sharing is inappropriate for your audience.
TikTok, X, Bluesky and other providers
WordPress currently lists providers including TikTok, Twitter (now commonly called X), and Bluesky, among others, in its embed documentation. A listed provider does not guarantee every post will work: the post may be private, the URL format may be unsupported, or the provider may have changed its embed endpoint. Try the dedicated block first, then the generic Embed block.

Check these causes in order:
- Wrong URL: confirm that the copied address opens the individual post directly, without an internal editor, login-only, or shortened URL that the provider cannot resolve.
- Private or restricted content: sign out or use a private browser window to verify that the post is publicly viewable. Instagram requires a public post; YouTube private videos cannot be embedded.
- Embedding is disabled: for YouTube, the publisher’s setting controls whether external sites can embed the video.
- Provider or endpoint changes: Facebook and Instagram have documented oEmbed endpoint and authentication complications. Older WordPress instructions may no longer match the provider’s current requirements.
- Geographic restrictions: a video or post can be unavailable in the visitor’s country even when the URL is valid.
- Editor-only success: reload the published or preview URL as a logged-out visitor. A block that appears in the editor can fail when the provider’s script runs on the front end.
- Unsupported provider: use a normal linked title or button rather than pasting arbitrary third-party iframe code as a first-line fix.
Embedding versus displaying a social feed
The URL-and-block method is for one post. It does not create an automatically refreshed timeline. A continuously updated, filtered, or heavily styled feed is a different project: it normally requires a feed plugin or the provider’s own integration, plus ongoing checks when platform APIs and permissions change.
Rank #3
For example, the WordPress.org listing for Smash Balloon Social Photo Feed describes an Instagram feed plugin with oEmbed support and responsive feed options. Consider that route only when you need a recurring, customizable Instagram feed; it is unnecessary for embedding a single post.

Practical checklist before publishing
- Is the URL the individual post, video, reel, or playlist?
- Is the content publicly viewable, and does the provider permit embedding?
- Did you try the provider-specific block before the generic Embed block?
- Did you check the published page on desktop and mobile?
- Does the embedded content create a privacy or loading concern for your visitors?
- Would a plain link provide a more reliable experience?
