The dependable way to embed Instagram content is to use a public post or Reel and insert either Instagram’s embed code or a supported Instagram URL in your website editor. Your account must be public and allow embeds, and the page must permit the external Instagram script to load. Preview the published page because an embed is rendered by Instagram in the browser, not stored as a static image.
What you need before embedding
- A public Instagram post or Reel. Meta’s official WordPress plugin supports public post URLs, Reel URLs and profile URLs; it does not support Stories.
- An account that allows embeds. WordPress.com identifies public-account status and permission to embed as requirements.
- Access to a website editor that accepts an HTML/custom-code block, an embed block, or Instagram URLs through a CMS integration.
- The original Instagram page link or the embed code supplied by Instagram.
Private, inactive, age-restricted or embed-disabled accounts may also prevent an embed from loading. These restrictions are useful troubleshooting checks, but availability can vary as Meta changes its platform rules.
Choose an insertion method
Use Instagram-provided embed code
Choose this route when your editor accepts HTML or a dedicated custom-code block. The snippet contains the post reference and a script that lets Instagram render the post.
Paste the Instagram URL
Choose this route when your CMS resolves supported URLs automatically. Meta’s official WordPress plugin documents URL support for public posts, Reels and profiles. A URL pasted into a normal paragraph may remain plain text if your editor does not have an Instagram integration, so use its Embed, Instagram or Custom HTML block when available.

How to embed an Instagram post
- Open the post. In Instagram, open the photo or video you want to show and copy its link. You can also obtain the embed code if Instagram offers that option for the content.
- Confirm the content is eligible. Use a post or Reel from a public account, and make sure embeds are allowed. Do not use a Story with the official Meta WordPress plugin because Stories are not supported there.
- Open the page editor. Navigate to the page or post where the Instagram content should appear. Add an Embed, Instagram, HTML, Custom HTML or equivalent block, depending on your CMS.
- Insert the content. Paste the Instagram URL into a URL-aware embed block, or paste the complete Instagram-provided snippet into an HTML/custom-code block. Do not paste HTML into a visual paragraph field that escapes markup.
- Preview and publish. Save or publish the page, then inspect it in a logged-out browser window and on a phone. Confirm that the post image, caption and controls render in the intended location.
- Check the surrounding layout. Make sure the embed is not hidden by a cookie-consent layer, restrictive Content Security Policy, ad blocker or CSS rule. Test the page after clearing any cache used by your CMS or CDN.
WordPress and WordPress.com
WordPress with Meta’s official plugin
Meta’s official Meta Embeds WordPress plugin supports public Instagram post URLs in the form instagram.com/p/{media-shortcode}, Reel URLs in the form instagram.com/reel/{media-shortcode}, and profile URLs. Add the URL through the editor or the plugin’s supported embed workflow, then preview the page. The plugin explicitly excludes Stories.
WordPress.com
WordPress.com says photos, videos and Reels can be embedded when the Instagram account is public and allows embeds. Use the editor’s supported Instagram or embed block and paste the copied link. If the URL is displayed as text, switch to the block type intended for embeds rather than a standard text block.
Self-hosted WordPress without an integration
If your installation does not resolve Instagram URLs, use a Custom HTML block and the embed code supplied by Instagram. Plugin availability, editor permissions and site security settings differ between installations, so an administrator may need to enable custom HTML.
What happens when the page loads
An Instagram embed is not a static image. Meta’s WordPress plugin documentation says WordPress makes a server-side request to graph.facebook.com/v25.0/instagram_oembed to fetch embed HTML. The returned HTML includes a script that loads instagram.com/embed.js in the visitor’s browser. That script renders the post on the front end.
Rank #2
This architecture creates practical dependencies: Instagram must still serve the content, the visitor’s browser must be able to load the external script, and your privacy or security settings must permit the required requests. Meta notes that front-end rendering is subject to its Privacy Policy. Explain this third-party dependency in your site’s privacy documentation when it matters to your audience.
Supported content and important limits
| Content | Documented support | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Public photo or video post | Supported by Meta’s official WordPress plugin and WordPress.com | Account is public and allows embeds |
| Public Reel | Supported by Meta’s official WordPress plugin and WordPress.com | Use the Reel URL, not a Story link |
| Public profile URL | Supported by Meta’s official WordPress plugin | Confirm your CMS supports profile embeds |
| Story | Not supported by Meta’s official WordPress plugin | Use a different publishing approach if you need temporary Story content |
| Private or embed-disabled account | May fail to render | Review account visibility and embed permission |
Troubleshooting an Instagram embed
The URL appears as ordinary text
Your editor probably does not recognize Instagram URLs in that field. Replace the paragraph with an Instagram or Embed block, install the CMS integration documented for your platform, or use a Custom HTML block with the supplied embed snippet.
The block is blank
Check that the account is public, the post still exists and embeds are allowed. Test a different public post. Clear page, plugin and CDN caches, then test without an ad blocker or script-blocking extension.

The post says it is unavailable
The owner may have deleted the post, changed the account to private, restricted its audience or disabled embeds. A Story link is another likely cause when using Meta’s WordPress plugin.
The embed works in preview but not for visitors
Compare the logged-in editor view with a logged-out browser. Consent tools, Content Security Policy headers, JavaScript optimization, lazy-loading rules or a firewall may block Instagram’s external requests. Allow the required Instagram and Facebook domains according to your site’s security policy, then retest after publishing.
The page is slow or shifts during loading
The browser must load third-party JavaScript and the Instagram content after the initial HTML. Place the embed where it will not disrupt the main reading path, avoid adding many embeds to one page, and test on a slower mobile connection. Do not replace a working embed with a screenshot unless you are willing to lose live captions, links and interaction.
The post disappears later
Because the embed references Instagram’s live content, deletion, privacy changes, account restrictions or platform changes can affect the page. Schedule periodic checks for important campaign or evergreen pages.

- Tell visitors when a page loads third-party Instagram content, especially where consent requirements apply.
- Keep explanatory text around the embed so the page remains understandable if scripts are blocked.
- Do not treat an Instagram embed as your only copy of an important announcement; preserve the essential information in your own page.
- Check keyboard navigation, contrast and mobile width after publishing. The embedded controls are supplied by Instagram, but your surrounding heading and context are your responsibility.
- Use a meaningful heading and caption around the embed rather than relying on the post itself to explain why it appears on the page.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered screenshot of an Instagram page or any other URL rather than a live, interactive Instagram embed, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request website screenshot API and MCP server. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API when a static PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF is the right output. It is not a replacement for an interactive Instagram embed: a screenshot will not provide live captions, likes or links. ScreenshotNeo also includes an MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

Read the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://instagram.com -o shot.webp
Replace the target URL with the public Instagram page you want to capture. The service also supports full-page shots, lazy-loaded images, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click actions, selector waits, network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://instagram.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://instagram.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Best Value
Will visitors need an Instagram account?
A public embed can render for visitors without an Instagram login, but rendering still depends on Instagram availability, browser settings and your site’s privacy or security controls.
Is an Instagram embed the same as uploading an image?
No. An embed loads external HTML and JavaScript and can show live Instagram content. An uploaded image is hosted by you but does not preserve the post’s live interaction.
