You can embed a public Instagram post in WordPress, but pasting its URL alone is no longer a dependable built-in feature. WordPress removed Instagram from its default oEmbed provider list in version 5.5.2 after Meta (then Facebook) closed the unauthenticated oEmbed endpoint. For an automatic URL workflow, install and configure a compatible Meta Embeds plugin. For a single item, paste Instagram’s embed code into a WordPress Custom HTML block.

Why pasting an Instagram URL changed

oEmbed lets WordPress request ready-to-display HTML from a service such as YouTube when you insert a supported URL. WordPress keeps an internal provider allowlist for security, so a URL works automatically only when its service is on that list.

Instagram was among the providers removed in WordPress 5.5.2. WordPress documentation records that the former Instagram Embed block stopped working after Facebook closed its endpoint on October 24, 2020. That retired block is not a current solution, and a plain Instagram permalink should not be presented as a reliable native WordPress workflow.

Choose the method that fits your site

Method How it works Best for What you must check
Meta Embeds plugin Registers Meta oEmbed endpoints as WordPress providers, so WordPress can process supported URLs automatically. Sites that regularly add Instagram URLs and want an editor-friendly workflow. Current plugin requirements, WordPress compatibility, maintenance, and the URL type supported by the installed version.
Custom HTML block You paste Instagram’s supplied embed code rather than only its permalink. One-off posts or pages where you can handle the code manually. The source must be public, and the code must be inserted in a Custom HTML block.

Method 1: Use the official Meta Embeds plugin

Meta’s official WordPress plugin readme lists public Instagram post, reel, and profile URLs as supported and says the plugin registers Meta API endpoints as WordPress providers. Because plugin requirements and endpoint compatibility can change, read the current plugin readme and test it on your WordPress version before relying on it across a site.

Install and activate it

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New.
  2. Search for Meta Embeds, confirm that the plugin is the official Meta plugin, and review its current requirements and compatibility information.
  3. Click Install Now, then Activate.

Insert a supported Instagram URL

  1. Open the post or page in the block editor.
  2. Add an Embed block (or paste the URL into a new paragraph and let WordPress offer the embed).
  3. Paste the public Instagram URL and select Embed when prompted.
  4. Save or publish, then open the public page in a logged-out browser window to verify the result.

The plugin’s declared URL forms include a post such as instagram.com/p/{media-shortcode}, a reel such as instagram.com/reel/{media-shortcode}, and a profile such as instagram.com/{username}. Use the exact URL format supported by the plugin version you installed; do not assume that every Instagram URL, story, or private item is handled.

Method 2: Paste Instagram embed code in Custom HTML

WordPress documentation distinguishes supported URL embeds from unsupported services that require supplied embed code in a Custom HTML block. This method does not make a bare permalink work; it inserts the HTML and script needed for that individual embed.

Get the code from Instagram

  1. Open the public Instagram post or reel in a browser.
  2. Use Instagram’s More menu and choose Embed, if that option is available.
  3. Copy the generated embed code. Do not edit out required attributes or scripts unless you understand the effect.

Add it to WordPress

  1. Edit the target post or page.
  2. Insert a Custom HTML block.
  3. Paste the complete Instagram embed code into the block.
  4. Use the editor’s preview if available, then save and publish.
  5. Open the published URL itself and check the embed on the front end.

A block-editor preview is not proof that visitors will see the same result. Front-end caching, scripts, permissions, and the source account’s visibility can affect the published page.

Limits that apply to both methods

  • Public content: The cited WordPress and Meta documentation supports public Instagram content. Do not plan on embedding private posts or profiles.
  • Supported URL type: A plugin may support posts, reels, and profiles without supporting every Instagram surface. Check its current readme.
  • Provider changes: Meta can change endpoints, authentication, or supported formats. A previously working URL may need a plugin update or a different method.
  • Site policy: Review any plugin’s maintenance, compatibility, privacy, and performance implications before deploying it broadly.

Why an Instagram embed is not working

The URL is pasted into a native Embed block without a provider

WordPress only processes URL-only embeds for providers on its allowlist. Install a compatible Meta Embeds plugin for automatic handling, or use the Instagram code in a Custom HTML block.

The source is private or unavailable

Confirm that the post, reel, or profile is publicly viewable in a logged-out browser. The available documentation does not establish a supported private-content workflow.

The URL type is not supported by the installed plugin

Compare the URL with the plugin’s current declared support. A profile URL and a reel URL are different forms; support for one does not prove support for another.

You checked only the editor preview

Publish or update the page and test its public URL. Check it while logged out and, where appropriate, in another browser so an administrator session or cached editor state does not hide a front-end problem.

The plugin or endpoint has changed

Check for plugin updates and read the current compatibility notes. If the automatic route remains unreliable, use the supplied embed code for a public individual item when Instagram makes that code available.

Which approach should you use?

Choose Meta Embeds when editors need to paste supported public Instagram URLs repeatedly and you accept the added plugin maintenance and compatibility review. Choose Custom HTML when you need one particular public embed and prefer not to add a provider plugin, provided Instagram supplies usable embed code for that item.
