To embed a YouTube live stream in WordPress, add a YouTube Embed block to a post or page, paste the stream’s URL, select Embed, and preview the page. WordPress supports YouTube Live URLs in the form youtube.com/live/videocode. If the editor does not embed the link, use the iframe code from YouTube’s Share > Embed menu in a Custom HTML block.
Embed a YouTube live stream with a WordPress block
- Copy the stream URL. Use the URL for the specific live stream you want visitors to watch. WordPress documents the Live URL format as
youtube.com/live/videocode. Check that the stream is available to the intended viewers. WordPress’s YouTube embed instructions describe the supported format and block workflow. - Open the WordPress editor. Edit the post or page where the player should appear, add a YouTube Embed block, and paste the URL.
- Choose Embed. When WordPress recognizes the URL, select Embed to place the player in the content. The block lets visitors watch without leaving your site.
- Preview the page. Use WordPress’s preview option, then check the page at both desktop and phone widths. The block’s small-device media setting can preserve the player’s aspect ratio. Wide and full-width alignment options depend on your theme.
Use YouTube’s iframe code if the URL will not embed
If WordPress does not accept the link, get the embed HTML directly from YouTube: open the stream, select Share > Embed, and copy the iframe code. In the WordPress editor, add a Custom HTML block, paste the code, save the page, and preview the public result. YouTube documents this embed option in its video and playlist embedding guidance.
The native block is the simpler choice for a straightforward player. Iframe HTML is a useful fallback when the URL is not handled as an embed and gives you access to the embed code YouTube supplies. If you edit iframe parameters, verify the result on the front end rather than assuming the editor preview reflects how every visitor will see it.

Why a YouTube live stream may not play
- WordPress shows a link instead of a player: Check that you copied a supported YouTube Live URL and used the YouTube Embed block. WordPress may turn unsupported URLs into text links; try YouTube’s iframe code in a Custom HTML block. See WordPress’s general embeds documentation.
- The player appears but playback fails: The uploader must allow embedding. The stream may also be restricted by country. WordPress says private YouTube videos cannot be embedded, and YouTube notes that age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites; viewers may be redirected to YouTube. Check the stream’s YouTube settings and YouTube’s embedding guidance.
- The intended audience cannot see the stream: YouTube stream visibility can be public, private, or unlisted. Confirm that the selected setting fits your audience and that the stream is active or otherwise available when visitors arrive.
- The player is awkward on a phone: Review the block’s media setting and the published page at a narrow width. Theme support determines whether wide or full-width alignment is available.
Add YouTube Live Chat separately
The live chat is a separate iframe; embedding the video does not automatically add chat. YouTube’s chat embed URL uses the stream’s video ID and the domain of the page hosting the iframe. The embed_domain value must match that page’s domain. YouTube also says live chat embedding is not available on mobile web. Follow YouTube’s Live Chat embedding instructions if you want chat alongside the player.

Privacy considerations for an embedded player
WordPress notes that non-personally identifying viewing data is shared with YouTube and the site publisher when a visitor watches an embedded video. YouTube’s Privacy Enhanced Mode uses the youtube-nocookie.com domain and prevents embedded views from influencing YouTube browsing personalization; ads shown in this mode are non-personalized. It does not remove every privacy responsibility for your site. If your site is child-directed, YouTube requires you to self-designate it even when using Privacy Enhanced Mode.
