To embed a web-based design editor, use the editor’s supported integration: a standard iframe for viewing a design or prototype, an API-enabled iframe when your site needs to send commands or receive events, or a vendor SDK app when your code must run inside the editor. For example, Figma documents iframe embeds and an Embed API; Canva supports apps that run inside Canva and a separate flow for embedding a published Canva design on your website.
Choose the right kind of embed
Start by deciding what the embedded experience needs to do. The three common patterns are not interchangeable: they run code in different places and provide different levels of control.

Use the least complex option that meets the requirement. A simple iframe is not an editor SDK, and an iframe alone does not give the host page arbitrary control over the embedded application. Prefer documented vendor URLs and APIs over framing undocumented editor pages, which can change or stop working without notice.

Create the iframe
Figma’s documented basic pattern is an iframe whose URL points to a design or FigJam file. The placeholder in the example below must be replaced with the relevant file key and route for the item you want to embed:

</iframe>Figma’s documentation describes using an iframe with a file URL and query parameters to customize how the embed can be viewed and used: Figma embed documentation. The exact route and parameters depend on whether you are embedding a design, board, or prototype; use the supported URL and options for that resource rather than assuming one URL works for every file type.
Make it fit your page
The example uses a fixed height and a fluid width. For a responsive layout, place the iframe in a container that controls its aspect ratio or height at different breakpoints. Avoid letting a very short frame hide important controls or a very tall frame push the rest of your page far below the fold. Add a clear fullscreen option when the embedded content needs more room, and include a loading or fallback state so a delayed embed does not look like a broken blank area.
Use descriptive surrounding text to tell users what they are viewing and whether interaction is available. The iframe content is a separate browsing context; do not assume your page’s CSS or JavaScript can style or manipulate its internal interface.

Figma documents controls for pan and zoom, page selection, Dev Mode, fullscreen, and theme. Choose only controls that support the task: a review page may benefit from fullscreen and navigation, while a compact reference embed may need fewer options. Keep the available controls consistent with the file’s sharing permissions and the user’s intended workflow.

Use the Figma Embed API for host-to-prototype interaction
Choose the Embed API when your host page needs more than displaying a prototype—for example, when it must send supported commands or react to events. Figma requires an OAuth app for Embed API use. Its setup also involves a client ID and an allowlisted embed origin: Figma Embed API documentation.
- Create the OAuth app and configure the allowed embed origin in the vendor’s developer settings.
- Load the supported embed for the prototype you intend to control.
- Use the documented API messaging pattern to send supported commands and listen for supported events.
- Validate message origins in your application before acting on messages received from an embedded frame.
- Keep credentials and tokens out of client-visible markup. Do not treat an iframe URL or a public page as a safe place for secrets.
Cross-origin browser boundaries are intentional: a host page generally cannot reach into an iframe’s document as if it were same-origin. Use the vendor’s supported messaging interface rather than trying to bypass that boundary. Handle the case where the frame has not loaded yet, and ensure your event handlers distinguish messages from the expected origin and frame.
Check sharing permissions before debugging code
An embed can be correctly implemented and still show an access prompt or limited functionality if the underlying file is not shared appropriately. Figma’s help documentation says public files can be viewed by anyone with the link, while prototype interaction depends on edit access: Figma file and prototype permissions.
- Confirm the file or prototype is shared with the people who need to view it.
- Test while signed out or in a separate browser profile to understand what a link-only visitor can see.
- Do not promise interactive access based only on a successful iframe load; the required permissions may differ from viewing permissions.
- For private work, avoid publishing an unrestricted embed simply to make a display issue disappear.
Build an app that runs inside Canva
A Canva app is a different integration from embedding a finished Canva design on your own website. Canva describes an app at its most basic as a JavaScript file that runs inside an iframe, with the Canva Developers SDK providing the supported environment: Canva Apps documentation.

Use this route when the feature belongs inside Canva—for example, when users should import content, add design elements, or automate tasks in the editor. Follow the current SDK setup and permission requirements in Canva’s developer documentation; do not assume that an iframe embed of a published design gives your site the capabilities of a Canva app.
Embed a finished Canva design on your website
If the goal is to display a published Canva design in your site, use Canva’s design-embed flow rather than building a Canva app. Canva instructs creators to open Share, copy the embed code, and paste it into a website. Its embed page says later changes to the source design update the embedded design: Canva design embed instructions.
- Open the finished design in Canva and choose Share.
- Copy the provided embed code.
- Paste that code into the appropriate HTML or embed component in your site.
- Preview the page and verify that the design displays as expected for the audience and sharing settings you intend.
This is a publishing workflow, not a way to run arbitrary code inside Canva’s editor. Keep the design’s sharing and access settings in mind, and retest the website if the source design or its permissions change.

Embedded editors depend on both your page and a separate vendor service, so design for failure as well as the successful load.

- Loading: Reserve space for the frame and show a concise loading state. Avoid repeatedly injecting duplicate iframes when a component re-renders.
- Failure: Provide a link to open the file or design directly if the frame cannot load. Do not make the embed the only route to essential information.
- Small screens: Check the iframe at narrow widths and ensure navigation or fullscreen controls remain usable. A prototype designed for a large canvas may be difficult to inspect in a short mobile frame.
- Permissions: Test as a viewer who does not own the file, not only as the developer signed into the vendor account.
- Accessibility: Give the embedded region a meaningful title where the integration supports it, and provide nearby text explaining its purpose and any alternative route.
- Privacy: Loading a third-party embed can contact the vendor from the visitor’s browser. Consider your site’s consent and privacy requirements before loading it automatically.
Troubleshoot common embed problems
The iframe is blank or refuses to load
Check that the URL is a documented embed URL for the correct file type, and that the file is available to the intended viewer. A normal editor URL is not necessarily interchangeable with an embed URL. Also inspect your browser console and network panel for a blocked frame, invalid route, or vendor-side error.
Visitors see an access prompt
Review the file’s sharing settings and test the link outside the owner’s signed-in session. A creator’s access does not prove that an anonymous or external visitor has permission to view the embed.
The prototype displays but interaction is limited
Viewing and interacting can require different permissions. Confirm the relevant user access, then use the Embed API if the host page needs programmatic control. A basic iframe does not substitute for the API’s OAuth setup or supported messaging model.

API messages do not arrive or appear untrusted
Check that the OAuth app and allowed origin match the actual page origin, that the frame has loaded, and that the code follows the current API message protocol. Validate the sender’s origin and expected frame before processing messages. Never loosen origin checks merely to suppress an error.

The embed is cropped or awkward on mobile
Adjust the container dimensions and test the real file at the target viewport sizes. Provide fullscreen as an option where supported, and avoid using a single desktop-oriented fixed height across all layouts.

Choose based on the job
For a viewable design or prototype, use the editor’s supported iframe. For host-page commands and events, use the vendor’s API-enabled embed and configure its authorization and origin requirements. For functionality that belongs inside the editor, build against that vendor’s SDK. For a finished Canva design, use Canva’s website embed flow. Keep static screenshots separate from these interactive embedding patterns: they are useful for previews and documentation, but not a replacement for an editor users can operate.

Can I embed an editor page by using its ordinary URL in an iframe?
Use the vendor’s documented embed URL or integration. An ordinary editor page URL is not guaranteed to work as an embed.
Does a screenshot API embed an interactive editor?
No. It produces a static image or PDF; an interactive editor requires the editor’s iframe, API, or SDK integration.
