To embed a video from X (formerly Twitter) on your website, open its public post on X.com, select the three-dot menu, choose Embed post, copy the code from publish.x.com, and paste it into an HTML or embed block on your site. This embeds the whole post—not a standalone video file.
If you mean adding a new video to an X post, that is a separate task: attach the video in the post composer and publish it.
Before you start
- The post must be public. X does not offer embed code for protected posts. Public posts can be viewed by anyone; protected posts are limited to approved followers. See X’s guidance on public and protected posts.
- Use the individual post page. Open the post itself, rather than relying on a feed preview.
- Your website must allow embeds. The generated code uses X’s rendering service. A site editor that removes scripts may not display it.
- An embed is not a copy. It displays the X post, including its author, text, media, and link back to X. It does not transfer the video to your server or grant permission to reuse it elsewhere.
How to embed an X video on a website
- On a desktop browser, go to X.com and find the post containing the video.
- Open the post’s detail page or permalink.
- Select the three-dot menu in the post’s upper-right corner.
- Choose Embed post. X opens its publishing tool at
publish.x.com. - Review the preview. If available, select Set customization options to adjust the appearance or hide the conversation.
- Select Copy Code.
- Paste the code where you want the post to appear in your website’s HTML or embed component, then save or publish the page.
- Check the published page in a private or incognito window, and test it on desktop and mobile.
This is X’s documented workflow: open the post menu, choose Embed post, customize if wanted, copy the code, and add it to a website or blog. It supports posts containing videos uploaded to X. See X’s instructions for embedding a post.

Use a field designed for HTML or third-party embeds. Pasting the code into an ordinary text or paragraph field may show the code as text, or the editor may remove it.

- WordPress: Add a Custom HTML block and paste the code there.
- Website builder: Use its Embed, HTML, or Code component.
- Other CMS: Switch to source or HTML mode, or use the CMS’s supported social-post embed feature.
- Markdown-only platform: A raw script embed may be stripped or displayed literally. Use an official embed block or an oEmbed workflow if the platform supports one.
- Email newsletter: Most email clients do not run third-party scripts reliably. Use a thumbnail linked to the original post instead.
These are practical implementation considerations, not a compatibility guarantee from X. If a platform blocks scripts, the official embed may not render there.
Embedding from a phone
X’s official instructions describe using X.com, not a universal workflow in every iOS or Android app. If the app’s share menu does not offer Embed post, open the post in a mobile browser. If the option is still missing, use the browser’s Request Desktop Site or equivalent setting and follow the desktop steps. The exact labels and controls may vary by browser.
Hide the conversation around a reply
If you embed a reply, the preview may include the post it replies to. On publish.x.com, look for Hide Conversation in the customization options. This can hide the original post in the conversation, but it does not turn the embed into a bare video player: the embedded post’s own text, author information, media, and X link may still appear. Why the video or embed may not appear

X says that if a post is deleted, the account is suspended, or the account becomes protected, an existing embed may retain post text while its media no longer loads through X’s JavaScript. Playback can also be unavailable to some viewers because of restrictions. An embed depends on the original post and X’s service, so check important embeds periodically and retain a useful fallback link. See X’s embed documentation.
Can you embed only the video?
The standard Embed post tool embeds the X post, not a clean, standalone .mp4 player. That is useful when you want to preserve the author’s attribution, post text, and link to the source. If you need a standalone player, use the original video host’s official embed tool or host an authorized copy yourself. Do not assume that extracting a media URL from a browser will produce a stable or permitted embed; such URLs may expire or stop working.
Downloading, recording, and re-uploading someone else’s video can raise copyright, consent, attribution, and terms-of-use issues. An X embed does not itself grant broader rights to republish the video outside that post.

Choose the right kind of embed

Privacy, accessibility, and upkeep
An X embed loads third-party content. X’s X for Websites privacy information says it may receive information when visitors view embedded content, such as the page they visited, IP address, browser type, operating system, and cookie information. If your site uses a consent manager or handles sensitive information, review your own privacy notice, consent configuration, jurisdiction-specific obligations, and organizational requirements. This is not legal advice.
Give the video useful context in nearby page text. Do not rely on the embed alone to convey essential information, and provide captions or a text summary where appropriate. Link to the original post as a fallback. For long-lived guides and important editorial pages, periodically verify that the post and video still load.
If you meant posting a video to X
To put a new video in an X post, use the post composer, select its media or gallery button, choose the video, complete the post, and select Post. This uploads or attaches media to a post; it is different from embedding an existing post on your website. See X’s guides to X videos and posting on X.

As of X’s help page checked on August 16, 2026, non-Premium accounts can upload videos up to 140 seconds and 512 MB. The page lists higher limits for Premium subscribers: videos shorter than four hours at 1080p, up to 16 GB; videos longer than two hours and under four hours are listed at 720p, up to 16 GB. These upload limits can change and matter only if you are creating the source post, not embedding an existing one.

Can I embed a video from a protected X account?
No. X does not provide embed code for protected posts. Use a public post instead, if the owner chooses to make it public.

Will an embedded X video autoplay?
Do not count on it. Autoplay and sound depend on X’s embed behavior and visitors’ browser and device settings. Design for click-to-play.
Can I embed an X video in an email?
Usually not as a functioning player: email clients commonly block scripts and third-party embeds. Use a linked thumbnail instead.
What happens if the original post is deleted?
The embed may retain some post text, but X says its media will no longer load through the embed’s JavaScript. Keep a fallback link or replace the embed if needed.
