The supported way to embed a Google Sheet is to publish it to the web, choose Embed, and paste Google’s generated iframe into your page’s HTML. You can publish the whole workbook or one tab, then adjust the URL to limit the visible range, hide tabs, headings, or the title bar.
Publish the sheet before embedding it
Google’s embed flow is controlled by File > Share > Publish to web. Publishing is not the same as giving named collaborators access: it creates a web-facing, view-only representation whose visibility depends on your account settings.
- Open the spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
- Choose File > Share > Publish to web.
- In the publishing dialog, choose Entire spreadsheet or a specific sheet (tab).
- Select the desired publishing format, open the Embed tab, and click Publish.
- Confirm the warning about making content available on the web or within your organisation.
- Copy the generated iframe HTML and paste it into your site, blog, or CMS HTML block.
Use Google’s generated URL and markup as the source of truth. Do not replace its spreadsheet identifier with a guessed value.
What the embedded sheet can and cannot do
It is view-only
Visitors can see cell values, formatting, and charts in the published view. They cannot edit cells or inspect the formulas behind them. Editing requires normal Google Sheets sharing permissions or a separate application built with the Sheets API.

Choose the publication scope carefully
You can publish the entire workbook or an individual sheet. Publishing a tab is safer when other tabs contain internal calculations or unrelated information, but verify that charts and references still make sense without the other tabs.
Publishing can broaden visibility
Depending on your Google account and administrator settings, publication may make the file visible to everyone on the web, everyone in your organisation, or a group in your organisation. Treat published content as potentially public. Remove confidential values, personal information, credentials, and hidden assumptions before publishing.
Paste the iframe into common website editors
HTML or a custom site
Open the page template or editor’s HTML/source mode and paste the complete iframe Google provides. Keep the src, dimensions, and attributes unless you have a specific layout requirement.
WordPress and similar CMSs
Use a Custom HTML block rather than a visual paragraph block. Paste the iframe, save or preview the page, and check it on both desktop and mobile. Some security-conscious hosts strip iframes; in that case an administrator must allow the Google published domain.

Responsive sizing
A fixed height can create a large blank area on a phone, while a short height forces scrolling inside the frame. Set the iframe width to 100% and choose a height that matches the amount of data. If your theme supports it, wrap the iframe in a container with controlled overflow and test keyboard and screen-reader navigation.
Limit the visible tab, range, and controls
The generated URL accepts query parameters documented for published Sheets. Add them to the URL already present in the iframe’s src; preserve existing parameters and URL-encode values when necessary.

For example, if Google supplies a published URL ending in existing query parameters, append the new options with &, not a second question mark. A representative final URL might contain gid, range=A1:B14, widget=false, headers=false, and chrome=false. Use the actual URL Google generated for your file.
Do embedded sheets update automatically?
Changes to the source spreadsheet normally flow to the published version automatically, although Google says the update can take a few minutes. This delay matters for dashboards, prices, schedules, and other time-sensitive pages.

To disable automatic updates, open the spreadsheet’s Published content and settings, clear Automatically republish when changes are made, and save. To remove the published representation entirely, return to the same area and choose Stop publishing. Removing an iframe from your page does not by itself stop publication.
When an iframe is the wrong integration
An embed is best for a read-only, human-facing view. Use a custom application instead when you need to authenticate each visitor, transform values, combine several sources, enforce business rules, or provide editing inside your own interface.
Use the Google Sheets API for private or interactive data
The Sheets API supports OAuth authorization scopes for spreadsheet access. Those scopes apply to the spreadsheet file, not an individual sheet tab, so design permissions at the file level. Google distinguishes a spreadsheet published to the web, which can be retrieved without authorization, from a private spreadsheet, which requires authentication.

Privacy and administration checklist
- Remove secrets, personal data, and internal notes before publishing.
- Confirm whether the account publishes to the public web, the organisation, or a group.
- Check every tab, chart, named range, and linked value that could reveal more than intended.
- Ask a workspace administrator whether publishing is disabled if the menu is missing.
- Review who may change sharing and publication settings; owners can restrict whether editors change permissions and share.
- After publishing, open the page in a signed-out or private browser window to verify the real audience.
Troubleshooting
The Publish to web option is missing or disabled
A work or school administrator may have disabled publication, or you may lack permission to change the file. Ask the owner or administrator to enable the feature, or use an approved API-based integration for authenticated viewers.

The page shows an error or a blank frame
Confirm that the iframe contains Google’s complete published URL, that the publication is still active, and that your site has not stripped the iframe. Test the URL directly in a browser. A content-security policy or CMS sanitiser may also block the frame.
The wrong tab appears
Republish the specific sheet or add the correct gid from Google’s generated URL. Do not assume tab order determines the ID.
Only part of the data is visible
Inspect the range parameter and remove it temporarily. A range such as A1:B14 intentionally excludes cells outside those coordinates.
Recent edits are not visible
Wait several minutes, then reload the published URL without an old browser cache. Check whether Automatically republish when changes are made was disabled.
Visitors ask how to edit
Explain that a published embed is view-only. Provide a separate, access-controlled Google Sheets link or build an authenticated application; do not expose editor permissions through the public iframe.

Can I embed just one Google Sheets tab?
Yes. In Publish to web, select the individual sheet instead of Entire spreadsheet, or use the published URL’s gid parameter for a specific tab.
Will readers need a Google account?
A published view generally does not require viewers to sign in, but the actual audience is determined by your account’s publication settings.
Can I make the embedded sheet editable?
Not through the published embed. Editing requires separate sharing permissions or an authenticated application using the Sheets API.
How do I remove a sheet from my website completely?
Remove the iframe from your page and choose Stop publishing in Published content and settings so the published URL is no longer available.
