Yes—iOS 16 lets you edit a recently sent iMessage, provided it was sent within the last 15 minutes and has been edited fewer than five times. The feature does not apply to green-bubble SMS, MMS, or RCS messages.
Check eligibility first
- The conversation uses iMessage (normally a blue bubble).
- Your iPhone is running iOS 16 or later, and the conversation supports compatible Apple software.
- The message was sent less than 15 minutes ago.
- You have not already edited it five times.

How to edit a sent iMessage
- Open Messages and enter the conversation.
- Touch and hold the message bubble you want to change.
- Tap Edit in the contextual menu.
- Correct or rewrite the text.
- Tap the checkmark or send-edit control to confirm the revision. To abandon the change, tap the X or cancel control.

What the recipient sees
Editing is not a silent rewrite. An Edited label appears beneath the message, and participants in a compatible conversation can tap that label to view earlier versions. The original text therefore remains available through the message’s edit history.

If a recipient is using older Apple software, Apple says the correction may arrive as a separate follow-up beginning with “Edited to” and containing the revised text in quotation marks. The exact presentation can vary with each participant’s software version.
Limits: 15 minutes and five edits
You can edit a message up to five times, and all five attempts must occur within 15 minutes of the original send time. Editing does not start a new 15-minute period. Waiting until the final seconds can also leave too little time to open the menu and confirm the change.

Why “Edit” may be missing
- The message is too old: the 15-minute window has expired.
- Five edits have already been used: iOS 16 removes editing access after the limit.
- It is not an iMessage: standard editing is unavailable for green-bubble SMS, MMS, and RCS/carrier-based messages.
- Software is incompatible: Apple documents editing for iPhone with iOS 16 or later, iPad with iPadOS 16.1 or later, and Mac with macOS 13 or later.
- You are looking at the wrong command: Edit changes the wording; Undo Send is a separate action that removes a recently sent message.
For an SMS, MMS, RCS message, expired message, or message that has reached five edits, send a follow-up correction instead. Deleting a message from your own conversation is not the same as editing or unsending it and does not necessarily remove it from the recipient’s device.

Recipients may already have read, copied, or screenshotted the original before you changed it, so editing should not be treated as a privacy guarantee.

Can I edit a green-bubble text in iOS 16?
No. The built-in feature edits iMessages only. Green bubbles generally represent SMS, MMS, or RCS/carrier-based messaging, so send a correction instead.

Can I edit an iMessage after 15 minutes?
No. Under iOS 16, editing ends 15 minutes after the original send time, and each message is limited to five edits.

Yes. In a compatible conversation, tapping the Edited label reveals previous versions. Recipients on older software may receive a separate “Edited to” follow-up.

The Bottom Line
For iOS 16, the eligibility test is simple: it must be a blue-bubble iMessage sent within 15 minutes, with fewer than five prior edits. Touch and hold the bubble, choose Edit, change the text, and confirm—while remembering that recipients can see the Edited status and history.
