Google Gemini 2.0 Flash is no longer a working image editor. Google shut down the dedicated gemini-2.0-flash-preview-image-generation endpoint on November 14, 2025, and the standard gemini-2.0-flash model on June 1, 2026. The current free-to-try replacement is image editing in the Gemini app, powered by Google’s newer Nano Banana image models (including gemini-3.1-flash-image).
This guide shows how to upload a photo, describe an edit, refine the result, and download it—without Photoshop—while explaining limits, privacy, rights and what “free” actually means.
What happened to Gemini 2.0 Flash?
Older tutorials often tell you to select gemini-2.0-flash-preview-image-generation in AI Studio. That preview image-generation model was retired on November 14, 2025. Google also shut down the standard gemini-2.0-flash model on June 1, 2026. Do not search for those model IDs or rely on their old API examples; they are historical workflows.

The current free way to edit a photo in Gemini
Use the consumer app at gemini.google.com. You need a Google Account and access in a supported country and language. Google says image editing is for users aged 18 or older; school, work and Workspace accounts can have different restrictions.
- Open Gemini and sign in.
- Start a chat or open the image-generation/editing experience. Labels vary by device, language and account rollout.
- Choose the attachment or upload control and select your image.
- Describe one clear visual change in ordinary language.
- Submit the request and inspect the returned image.
- Ask for a targeted revision if necessary. Download or export the version you want to keep.
Google’s current instructions are in its Gemini image-help page. Availability and controls can change by account, country and app version.
Editing an image Gemini created
- Open Gemini’s sidebar and select Library.
- Choose the generated image.
- Click Chat beneath it.
- Describe the revision and submit it.
How to write prompts that preserve the original
A reliable edit prompt has five parts:
- Action: remove, replace, recolor, restore or stylize.
- Target: identify the exact object or region.
- Preservation: state what must not change.
- Visual requirements: specify lighting, perspective, texture and shadows.
- Output: mention composition, crop or style.
Make one change per prompt. For major revisions, return to the original upload instead of repeatedly editing an already altered result. Save intermediate versions.

Reusable Gemini image-editing prompts
Remove an object
Remove the red backpack from the lower-right corner. Reconstruct the pavement and shadows naturally. Keep the person, framing, lighting, colors and image dimensions unchanged. Do not alter any other objects.Replace a background
Replace only the background with a quiet beach at golden hour. Keep the subject’s face, hair, clothing, pose, body proportions, lighting direction and camera angle unchanged. Blend the edges naturally.Clean up a product photo
Create a clean product-photo version of this image. Remove dust, scratches, reflections and background clutter. Keep the product’s shape, label, logo, colors, proportions and text exactly unchanged. Place it on a soft neutral background with realistic shadowing.Change a color
Change the jacket from blue to dark green. Preserve its texture, folds, highlights, shadows, stitching and fit. Do not change the person, background, skin tone or lighting.Make a localized edit
Edit only the marked area: replace the coffee cup with a clear glass tumbler. Preserve everything outside that area exactly as it is, including the table, hands, shadows, reflections and composition.Apply an art style
Transform this photo into a watercolor illustration while preserving the subject’s identity, pose, composition, major shapes and color relationships. Do not add text or new objects.Add text
Add the exact words “SUMMER MARKET” in a clean white sans-serif typeface at the top center. Spell every letter correctly. Keep the rest of the image unchanged.Modern image models handle text better than early systems, but spelling, kerning, logos and small labels can still be wrong. Inspect every character. For prices, addresses, legal notices and brand marks, generate without text and add typography in a conventional editor.
What edits work well?
Gemini is useful for semantic, visual changes such as removing distractions, replacing or blurring backgrounds, recoloring clothing, changing weather or time of day, restoring or colorizing an old photo, creating alternate compositions, combining reference images, and turning a photograph into an illustration, painting, sketch or poster. Google also describes local edits, multiple reference images, character consistency and adding elements.
Troubleshooting failed edits
Gemini describes the edit instead of making it
Try: Edit the uploaded image directly. Do not merely describe how to edit it. Make the requested visual change and return a new image. Confirm that the file actually uploaded, start a new chat, and use the image-generation/editing mode rather than a text-only mode. Try the web app if the mobile app fails, or vice versa. Check age, country, language and Workspace eligibility.

The result changes too much
Use: Make a minimal edit. Change only [specific object]. Preserve the original subject, face, pose, hands, clothing, background, lighting, perspective, crop and image dimensions. If preservation remains poor, restart from the original image.
Object removal looks artificial
Ask Gemini to reconstruct the area using surrounding texture, perspective, lighting and natural shadows, and to avoid blur, smearing, repeating patterns and visible seams.
A face or person changes
Request that identity, facial structure, age, expression, skin tone, hairstyle and body proportions remain unchanged. This improves results but cannot guarantee exact identity preservation.

What “free” means
Gemini may be available to try without a paid subscription where supported, but that does not mean unlimited editing. Limits can include rate caps, account eligibility, regional rollout, model availability and output resolution. Google’s help documentation says the stated current workflow provides 1K output without an AI plan and 2K with a Google AI plan, but entitlements and model names can change; check the live help page for your account.
Free consumer access, free experimentation in AI Studio, and the Gemini API free tier are different products. API use has model-specific quotas and token-based pricing; see Google’s image-generation documentation and pricing page. Do not assume an API workflow is unlimited or cost-free.

Gemini versus a traditional image editor
Gemini is a good fit when you can describe the desired change, want a fast concept or social image, and prefer natural-language instructions over selections and layers. It is a poor fit when exact pixels, masks, layers, paths, CMYK output, batch processing or repeatable brand fidelity matter.
Generative editing may redraw parts of an image. Hands, jewelry, facial details, logos, small text and product features can change. It cannot guarantee exact dimensions, typography or identity. For precise manual control, consider GIMP, Photopea or Krita. These tools are better for selections, clone/healing work, layers and nondestructive adjustments.
Do not use a generative result as unreviewed evidence, a medical record, an archival master or a regulated document. Commercial images require human inspection and, where necessary, a conventional finishing workflow.
Privacy, copyright and responsible use
- Upload only images you have permission to use, including photographs supplied by customers or coworkers.
- Avoid confidential documents, private identity data and sensitive personal photos unless you understand the applicable Google account and privacy terms.
- Do not use edits to impersonate, deceive, harass or infringe copyright.
- Review Google’s current terms and prohibited-use policies before publishing or selling an edited image.
Google’s developer documentation specifically reminds users to have the necessary rights to uploaded images. Keep the original file and record significant edits when provenance matters.
For developers: current Google image models
If you are building an application rather than editing one photo in a browser, Google currently positions gemini-3.1-flash-image (Nano Banana 2) as the general-purpose image-generation and editing model, gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image (Nano Banana 2 Lite) for speed and efficiency, and gemini-3-pro-image (Nano Banana Pro) for more demanding work. Use the current API guide; do not copy pricing or model IDs from Gemini 2.0 tutorials.
The Bottom Line
Gemini 2.0 Flash image editing is retired. To edit images for free, use the Gemini app, upload your photo, describe one precise change, review every detail and download the result. It is excellent for quick generative edits, but a layer-based editor remains safer for exact, professional or high-stakes work.
