To edit a photo in Google Photos, open it in the app on Android or iPhone/iPad and tap Edit; on a computer, open it at photos.google.com and click Edit. You can crop, adjust light and color, apply filters, add markup, and use some AI tools. For an important original, choose Save as copy when offered so you keep an untouched version.
Before you start
Google Photos’ editor differs between Android, iPhone/iPad, and the web. The mobile app generally has the broadest selection of tools; Google says some editing features are not available in the browser. If a control in this guide is missing, try the app rather than assuming the photo cannot be edited.
Some tools depend on your device, operating-system version, account, region, photo, and available storage. Google’s current help documentation lists Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM for most features, with some tools requiring more memory. For iPhone and iPad, it lists iOS 18 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM for most features; some tools have higher requirements. These requirements can change, so check Google’s Android editing help or its iPhone and iPad help for current details.

Editing a photo in your Google Photos library is also different from exporting a separate file to your phone or computer: make an edited copy first, then use the app’s download or save-to-device control if you need a local file.

Open the editor
Android
- Open the Google Photos app and select a photo.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose a category or tool, make your changes, then tap Done or the checkmark.
- Choose Save or Save as copy, if offered.
Depending on the app version and device, tools may be grouped under categories such as Markup, Filters, Crop, Adjust, and Actions.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Photos and select a photo.
- Tap Edit. Some users may see Tools within the editing flow.
- Choose a tool or category, make your changes, and tap Done.
- Tap Save or Save as copy, if available.
On iOS, editing controls can include Actions, Filters, Lighting, and Color.
Computer
- Go to photos.google.com and open a photo.
- Click Edit at the top.
- Select a tool, adjust the photo, and click Save.
The browser editor includes cropping and rotation, filters, suggested edits, and a range of light and color adjustments. Its tools are not identical to the mobile app. See Google’s computer editing instructions for the web-specific controls.

Use crop and rotation controls to remove distractions at the edges, level a horizon, or prepare an image for a particular frame. On Android, open Edit → Crop. Depending on the device, the available controls can include crop handles, Straighten, Rotate, Perspective, Auto frame, Aspect ratio, and Mirror. On iPhone and iPad, look for the crop handles, Aspect ratio, Rotate, Straighten, Auto frame, and Flip. On desktop, choose Edit → Crop & rotate, adjust the crop edges, and rotate if needed.

Aspect ratio presets change the proportions of the image, which is useful for a print, post, or screen. Straightening rotates the image slightly to level a horizon; perspective correction can help with a subject photographed at an angle. Auto frame may suggest or create a different composition. Review the edges after any of these changes: cropping can permanently remove visible image area from the saved result. Save a copy if you may want the uncropped framing later.
Improve lighting and color
Open Adjust on desktop or use the relevant Lighting and Color controls on mobile. Depending on your platform, adjustments can include brightness, contrast, white point, black point, highlights, shadows, saturation, and warmth.
- Brightness changes overall lightness; use it to correct a photo that is generally too dark or bright.
- Highlights affect bright areas, while Shadows affect dark areas. Lowering highlights or raising shadows can reveal more detail, though it cannot restore detail that was not captured.
- Contrast increases or decreases the separation between light and dark tones.
- White point and black point adjust the brightest and darkest tones.
- Warmth shifts the color temperature warmer or cooler; saturation changes overall color intensity.
A useful starting order is to correct overall brightness, tame overly bright areas, open dark areas, then adjust contrast and warmth. Finish with a modest saturation change if the colors still look flat. These are practical starting points, not fixed settings: judge the photo on its own and compare it with the original before saving.

Apply or remove a filter
Open Edit → Filters on mobile or choose Filters in the desktop editor. Select a look, then reduce its strength if an intensity control is available. Filters change the whole image, so check skin tones, skies, shadows, and color intensity rather than judging only the overall effect. In the desktop editor, choose None to remove a filter.

Add text, drawings, or highlights
On Android, open Edit → Markup. Choose Pen to draw, Highlight to emphasize an area, or Text to add a text box. Move the text box into place, tap Done, and save. Markup is handy for a screenshot, directions, or a quick explanation, but it is not layered editing: after saving, the text or drawing is generally part of the image and cannot be adjusted as a separate element. Choose Save as copy to preserve the clean original.
Use AI tools carefully
Remove an unwanted object
Google Photos provides Magic Eraser or related erase actions on supported devices. In the editor, look under Actions or the available tools, then tap, circle, or brush over the unwanted area and choose Erase when offered. Zoom in to make a more precise selection, and inspect the result at full size. Object removal generates replacement background detail; it can look wrong around faces, hair, hands, text, wires, repeating patterns, or straight architectural lines. Try refining the selection or use a conventional crop if accuracy matters. Save a copy for an important image.
Try Photo Unblur
Unblur may improve some photos with mild softness or blur, if it is available on your device. It cannot reliably recover detail lost to severe motion, missed focus, or heavy compression. Check faces and edges for halos or invented-looking detail. Google’s iPhone and iPad help says improved Unblur may require at least 6 GB of RAM; tool access still depends on device and feature availability.
Review suggested edits
Google Photos may offer suggestions such as Enhance, Dynamic, or AI Enhance. Open Edit, try a suggestion, and compare its result before saving; output can vary by device. Google’s current iOS documentation says AI Enhance is available in the United States when the Google Account language is set to English (United States), so it is not a universal control.

Describe an edit with Help me edit
Some eligible iPhone and iPad users may see Help me edit, which accepts a text or voice description of a desired change. Google describes this as experimental and warns that results can be unexpected or inaccurate. Availability is limited by country or region and eligibility: users must be at least 18, use a personal Google Account, and have the relevant Ask Photos and Gemini settings enabled. Google Workspace and school accounts are excluded. Treat it as an optional experiment, not a standard editing step.
Compare with the original before saving
While editing on mobile, press and hold the image preview to compare it with the original; on desktop, click and hold the image. This is especially useful after applying an automatic enhancement, filter, or AI action. A more dramatic result is not always a more faithful one.

Google Photos may offer one or both choices, depending on the tool and photo:

Not every tool offers both choices; some edits can only be saved as a copy. For a family photo, scan, work image, or anything hard to replace, a separate copy is the safer default.

Saving an edit to a Google Photos library is not necessarily the same as exporting a new file to the device. If you need a local image, open the finished photo and use the available download or save-to-device option for your platform. With backup enabled, Google says edits sync to your Google Photos account. Keep in mind that account storage is limited: Google documents up to 15 GB of included account storage shared across Google services. See Google’s storage information for details.
Undo an edit or restore the original
Before finishing an edit, use the editor’s cancel or close control to discard changes. For supported changes saved to the original, reopen the photo, enter the editor, and choose Revert where available. On desktop, you can also reset an adjustment or choose None for a filter. If you saved as a copy, the untouched original should remain a separate photo, but the edited copy cannot be reverted through the original’s editing history.
Editing a photo in a shared album
Google says only the owner of the original photo or video can edit it. If you own the original, Save may make an edit visible in the shared album; Save as copy keeps your edited version private. Read any confirmation prompt before saving, especially if you intend to make a private version.
If an editing tool is missing
- Check the platform: try the Google Photos mobile app if you are in a browser. Web and app tools differ.
- Check eligibility: device model, RAM, operating system, region, account type, and photo type can affect access.
- Update and restart: update Google Photos, then close and reopen the app or editor.
- Check downloads and storage: connect to Wi-Fi if needed, free device space, and reopen the editor after a tool download.
- Check the account: some experimental or AI features require a personal Google Account and are unavailable to Workspace or school accounts.
- Check the save option: a tool that only offers Save as copy may be working as intended, not failing.
When Google Photos is not enough
Google Photos is convenient for quick corrections, cloud access, and lightweight markup or AI actions, but it is not a full professional editor. Apple Photos is a natural fit for people who want editing integrated with an iPhone or iPad library. Snapseed suits users who want more traditional controls without needing a cloud subscription. Adobe Lightroom is aimed at photographers who need RAW workflows, masking, presets, and repeatable color adjustments. A desktop editor such as Photoshop or Affinity Photo is better for layers, compositing, precise retouching, or typography.
For most everyday edits, the safest routine is simple: make the basic corrections first, compare against the original, and choose Save as copy whenever you want to protect the source.
