To change the image that appears when someone shares a page, update that page’s social or featured image and expose the intended file through Open Graph metadata—especially og:image. Then inspect the exact URL in the destination network’s preview tool and request a fresh scrape if an older thumbnail remains cached. Editing the image inside an already-published social post is a separate task; changing your website does not rewrite that post automatically.
What controls a shared website thumbnail?
Social networks do not simply copy the first visible image in your page. Their crawlers read the page’s HTML head, evaluate metadata, and apply platform-specific selection and caching rules. A visible hero image can therefore be ignored unless the page identifies it explicitly.
- Open Graph: Use
og:title,og:description,og:url, andog:imagefor Facebook, LinkedIn, and many other link-preview systems. - X cards: For a large image card, use
twitter:cardwithsummary_large_imageand providetwitter:image. - Page identity: Metadata must describe the exact URL being shared, not a home page or an unrelated canonical URL.
Prepare the image before uploading it
Use a practical cross-platform canvas
A conservative starting point is 1200 × 630 pixels (approximately 1.91:1), saved as JPG or PNG and kept below 5 MB. This is a practical baseline, not a promise that every network will display every pixel identically. Keep logos, headlines, and faces away from the outer edges because feeds can crop the card.

Instagram ratios such as square, 4:5 portrait, and 1.91:1 landscape describe images in social posts; they are not proof of a universal website-link-preview requirement.

Change the thumbnail in WordPress
For an individual post or page
- Open the post or page that people will share.
- Set its Featured image (the exact label can vary by editor or theme).
- Save or publish the page.
- Inspect the rendered page source and confirm that the intended image is represented by
og:image. WordPress.com normally addsog:title,og:description, andog:imageautomatically. - Use the editor’s link-preview feature, when available, to check the card before distributing the URL.
On WordPress.com, a post or page generally uses its featured image first. If none exists, the documented fallback can include slideshow, gallery, in-content, and other site images. That fallback means a page with several pictures can produce an unexpected card, so an explicit featured image is safer.
For the home page
Home-page logic is different from a post. WordPress.com documents a front-page featured image first, followed by the site icon; some plans also provide a logo option. Set the image on the actual front page, then inspect the home-page URL rather than a post URL.
Using a plugin
A plugin is optional. The WordPress.org listing for Simple Open Graphs describes a per-post social-preview metabox, default social-image settings, compatibility behavior with major SEO plugins, and a generated 1200 × 630 card when a post lacks a featured or in-content image. Treat those as the plugin publisher’s description. Do not install multiple tools that emit competing tags without checking the final HTML.

Add the thumbnail on a custom website
Put one coherent set of tags in the page’s <head>. Replace the example values with data for the URL being shared.

Keep the tags in the server-rendered head if possible, because a crawler may not execute client-side JavaScript. Remove stale or duplicate tags generated by a theme, framework, or SEO plugin when they point to different images.
Make the page and image crawlable
- The shared page must be publicly reachable without a login, paywall challenge, or session-only URL.
- The image URL must be publicly fetchable and return an actual JPG or PNG file, not an HTML error page.
- Check
robots.txt, firewall rules, hotlink protection, and protected image directories. LinkedIn specifically notes that blocked retrieval or protected image locations can prevent a compliant image from appearing. - Use a normal color profile. Uncommon or embedded profiles can be processed differently and may make a card look washed out or soft. Export a web-safe JPG or PNG when color conversion is suspected.
Refresh a stale preview
- Publish the new image and metadata first.
- Open the platform’s official URL-inspection or debugger tool for the exact page URL.
- Request a new scrape. Facebook’s Sharing Debugger provides a Scrape Again action; LinkedIn’s Post Inspector can inspect the URL.
- Recheck the displayed title, description, and image. If the tool still shows old data, verify the live HTML and image response before trying again.
Social networks cache previews. A successful website edit therefore may not appear immediately. WordPress.com says X re-indexes card-tag information roughly every seven days, so an X delay can be longer than a Facebook or LinkedIn re-inspection cycle.

Troubleshoot the common failures
The old thumbnail is still showing
The network is probably serving a cached card. Confirm that the new og:image is live, then use the platform’s re-scrape or inspection action. Sharing a changed URL with a query string can sometimes create a different cache key, but it should not replace correcting the canonical metadata.

Add or replace the page’s featured image and explicit og:image. Remove competing tags and check the home-page-versus-post distinction. Facebook can choose what it considers the best representation when several candidate images exist.
No image appears even though the tag looks correct
Fetch both the page and image from outside your logged-in browser. Check HTTP status, redirects, access controls, robots rules, and whether the image URL is protected. Ensure the file is large enough for the target platform and below its documented limit.

The card is blurry, cropped, or oddly colored
Start with a high-resolution 1.91:1 asset, keep essential content central, and export as JPG or PNG. Platform compression can reduce clarity. If colors shift, remove an interfering color profile during export; Photoshop is one tool suggested for that diagnostic step.
Facebook reports an inferred image
That indicates Facebook did not receive a sufficiently explicit image signal. Set og:image directly or use a WordPress SEO tool that gives you control over the tag, then request another scrape.

Operational checks for teams
- Store the social asset at a stable URL so every rescrape sees the same file.
- Keep a page-level checklist covering featured image, Open Graph tags, X tags, crawl access, dimensions, and file size.
- After a redesign or SEO-plugin change, inspect representative post and home-page URLs because their fallback rules differ.
- Do not infer engagement gains from a thumbnail change; the documented guidance provides implementation specifications, not a universal performance percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing the website image edit an image already used in a social post?
No. A published post may contain its own composed media. Website metadata controls previews generated from the shared URL; edit the social post separately if it already contains an uploaded image.

You can use the same 1.91:1 JPG or PNG as a practical starting point, while still declaring both og:image and twitter:image so each crawler receives an explicit value.
Do I need a WordPress plugin?
No. WordPress.com can generate core Open Graph tags automatically, and a custom site can emit them directly. A plugin is an optional interface for setting defaults or per-page images.
