The easiest route depends on what you sell. For a donation, service, membership, or occasional sale, WordPress.com’s Payments block creates one-time or recurring payment buttons connected to Stripe. For a catalog with products, cart, tax, shipping, and a complete checkout, use WooCommerce with a supported gateway such as the Stripe extension or WooPayments.

Choose between a payment button and a full store

Need Best fit What it provides Important limits
One payment, donation, service, membership, or subscription WordPress.com Payments block Stripe-connected button with one-time or recurring plans Not a complete cart, tax, shipping, or product-catalog system
Multiple products and a full ecommerce workflow WooCommerce plus a payment integration Store catalog, cart, checkout, and configurable payment methods Requires more setup, security maintenance, and eligibility checks

Payment methods, merchant eligibility, currencies, and fees change by country and provider. Confirm current terms for your business before publishing prices or promising a payment method.

Option 1: Add credit-card buttons on WordPress.com

Check plan and merchant eligibility

WordPress.com documents the Payments Buttons block for Premium, Business, and Commerce plans; Free and Personal sites must upgrade. Stripe eligibility is based on the country where you are a citizen or where your company is established. Check the supported-country and currency list in WordPress.com’s Stripe connection guide. Customers can generally use cards issued in other countries, but the merchant still must qualify in a supported location.

Connect Stripe and create the button

  1. Create or sign in to your Stripe account and confirm that your business details and payout information are complete.
  2. In the WordPress.com editor, add the Payments block and choose the payment-button option.
  3. Connect the site to Stripe when prompted.
  4. Create a payment plan, entering the amount, currency, description, and whether it is one-time or recurring.
  5. Publish the page and make a small live or test transaction according to the processor’s available testing tools.

The block is intended for straightforward transactions rather than a store workflow. WordPress.com describes it as suitable when you do not yet need shopping-cart, checkout, tax, and shipping features; see its online-selling guide.

#1 Best Overall
Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Understand the cost

WordPress.com’s Payments-block documentation, last reviewed August 20, 2026, states that Stripe collects 2.9% plus US$0.30 for each payment made to the Stripe account. This is a processor charge, not a universal total: your WordPress.com plan and any current regional or processor pricing may add costs. Verify the live terms at the Payments block documentation and Stripe before launch.

Option 2: Accept cards in a WooCommerce store

Prepare the site

  • Use a current WordPress and WooCommerce installation and a recent supported PHP version.
  • Enable HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate before taking live payments.
  • Operate from a country supported by the chosen processor and confirm that your business and currency qualify.

The requirements and configuration details are listed in WooCommerce’s Stripe setup documentation.

Use the WooCommerce Stripe extension

  1. Install and activate the official Stripe extension from your WooCommerce administration area.
  2. Open WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Stripe and connect the Stripe account.
  3. Configure webhooks, checkout appearance, and the payment options enabled for your region.
  4. Review order, refund, and payout settings, then run the processor’s test mode before switching to live transactions.

The extension supports credit and debit cards, express checkout, regional payment methods, and some buy-now-pay-later options. WooCommerce says the extension has no setup or monthly fee; Stripe sets transaction pricing and its own eligibility terms. See the Stripe extension documentation.

Select additional methods deliberately

In WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → Stripe → Payment Methods, enable only methods your customers can use and your business can fulfill. The extension’s list is a subset of what may appear in Stripe’s dashboard, and a method can remain unavailable when its requirements are not met. Details are in WooCommerce’s additional-payment-method guide.

Security and PCI responsibilities

Keep card data off the WordPress site

Use a gateway that collects card details on its hosted or processor-controlled fields. Do not store card numbers, CVVs, or expiration dates in WordPress, its database, or an export. PCI DSS compliance is assessed per merchant, not per hosting environment, so a plugin alone cannot make a business compliant. Follow the requirements supplied by your processor or acquiring bank; WordPress.com explains the responsibilities in its PCI DSS guidance.
