You can request your Twitter archive—now called an archive of your data in X—through your account settings. On the web, go to More → Settings and privacy → Your account → Download an archive of your data, confirm your password, then select Request archive. X prepares the ZIP separately and says it will notify you by email and in the app when it is ready. Requesting is not the same as downloading.
What you need
- Access to the X account whose data you want.
- The account password to confirm the request.
- Access to the account’s email or X app notifications so you can learn when the archive is ready.
- A computer is recommended for downloading, extracting and browsing the archive. X describes its included viewer as intended for a desktop web browser.
The archive can include private messages, contact information and account activity, so plan to store it somewhere private. Its size depends on the account and may include media; allow room for both the ZIP and its extracted contents.
Request your archive on the web
- Sign in to X using the correct account.
- Open More in the main navigation.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Choose Your account.
- Select Download an archive of your data.
- Confirm your password and select Request archive.
X’s current instructions are on its archive and account-data help page. Menu placement or wording can vary slightly as the interface changes; look for the account-data option in settings.

You can submit the request on iPhone or Android:
- Open the X app and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Your account.
- Tap Download an archive of your data.
- Confirm your password and tap Request archive.
You can make the request on a phone, but plan to download and inspect the files on a computer. X says the included Your archive viewer is for use in a desktop web browser.

When it is ready: download and open the ZIP
Archive preparation takes place after you submit the request. X says it sends an email and an in-app notification when the archive is ready. It does not give a universal delivery-time guarantee in its main archive instructions. X’s separate guidance about broadcast archives says preparation can take 24 hours or longer, but that timing should not be treated as a promise or estimate for every account archive.
- When notified, return to Settings and privacy → Your account → Download an archive of your data.
- Use the download control shown for the completed archive. Its label or location may change.
- Save the ZIP file to a trusted, private computer.
- Extract it with your computer’s built-in ZIP or archive utility.
- Open the extracted Your archive file in a desktop browser to browse the data.
- Keep the original ZIP until you have checked that the extracted files open and appear intact.
The package includes HTML and JSON files. The viewer is the more approachable way to browse; the raw files may be useful if you want to search, analyze or process the data with compatible tools. It is not necessarily a spreadsheet or an import-ready migration package.

What does a Twitter/X archive include?
X describes a machine-readable snapshot of information associated with your account. Depending on the account and the data available, it may include categories such as:

| Posts | Post history, including older posts that may no longer appear in the ordinary profile timeline. |
| Direct Messages | Direct-message data associated with your account. |
| Media | Images, videos and GIFs attached to posts, Direct Messages or Moments. |
| Network | Followers and accounts you follow. |
| Lists and contacts | Lists you created, joined or followed, and address-book contacts imported into X. |
| Account activity | Blocked and muted accounts. |
| Apps and devices | Connected apps, browsers and mobile devices. |
| Advertising and personalization | Inferred interests, demographic information and advertiser-interaction data. |
| Account history | Login history and approximate places used while logged in. |
These are categories X identifies, not a guarantee that every account will contain every item or that every historical record is complete. Think of the export as a snapshot of data X makes available for your account, not a forensic record guaranteed to include every item ever associated with it.

Why the archive can show older posts
X says a profile timeline displays up to 3,200 of your most recent posts and points users to the archive to browse a snapshot starting with their first post. If older posts are missing from your profile timeline, the archive is the official route X recommends for accessing older account history. See X’s new-user FAQ.
The archive is not a live mirror. Do not assume it can restore deleted posts or recover content that is unavailable, missing or corrupted. X lists post history as an archive category, but does not promise that every historic item will be present.

If the notification does not arrive
X confirms that it sends an email and an in-app notification when an archive is ready, but its main instructions do not provide a full troubleshooting procedure. As practical checks:
- Look in your spam, junk and promotions folders.
- Confirm which email address is associated with the X account.
- Check in-app notifications.
- Revisit the archive page to see whether the request is still pending or a download is available.
- Avoid submitting repeated requests unless the page indicates you need to make a new one.
If you cannot access the account, use X’s official account-access or privacy support routes. Avoid third-party recovery services that ask for your password or account credentials.

If the archive option is missing
First check that you are signed in to the right account and have opened Your account within settings. Try the web interface if the app option is not visible, and update the app if needed. If you still cannot access the account-data setting, the account may be subject to an access restriction or X may be experiencing a temporary issue; those possibilities are not a definitive diagnosis. Use X’s official support forms if the account remains inaccessible.
If you plan to deactivate your account
Request the archive before deactivation whenever possible. X says a deactivated account can be restored for up to 30 days. If you do not log back in during that period, X says the account becomes permanently deactivated and associated information is no longer available in its Production Tools. Do not count on retrieving an archive after permanent deactivation; see X’s account-data guidance.
Protect the archive
Treat the ZIP as sensitive: it may contain Direct Messages, contact data, login and device details, and information used for advertising personalization. Save it to a private location, restrict access to it, and consider keeping a second backup if the records matter to you. Avoid uploading it to public computers, random archive-viewer websites or third-party converters. Opening the included viewer locally in a desktop browser and extracting the ZIP with your operating system’s built-in tool are sensible defaults.

Important limits
- It is for your own account. The archive process does not let you obtain another person’s private account data, messages or records. X’s own-account information form and form for requests involving somebody else distinguish those situations; private parties generally need to act as the account holder or an authorized representative.
- It is not a general search export. It does not download every post from any public account.
- It is not account recovery. You must establish access to the account to use the normal request flow.
- It does not guarantee deleted content can be restored.
- It is not automatically legal evidence. X directs account holders to use the normal archive process for their own data when possible, but legal preservation, authenticity and completeness requirements may call for separate formal steps. Consult counsel for legal or litigation needs.
Users in the European Union or EFTA States may request additional account information through X’s Privacy form, according to its account-data guidance.
