WordPress’s built-in Tools > Export creates an XML content export, not a standalone archive of the media files.
First decide what “entire media library” means
A WordPress media library has separate deliverables. The original files are stored on the server; attachment records in the database contain information such as titles, URLs, captions and alternative text. A complete site backup also includes the database, themes, plugins and configuration.
- Need the files: download the uploads directory or generate ZIP archives.
- Need an inventory: export attachment metadata to CSV or JSON.
- Need a migration or disaster-recovery copy: preserve both server files and the database, then account for the rest of the WordPress installation.
Why Tools > Export is not a media-file download
WordPress’s official export tool produces a WXR/XML file containing content data such as posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, taxonomies and users. That file can be imported into another WordPress site, but it is not documented as a ZIP archive of the underlying images, documents, audio or video. Use it for content portability, not as your only copy of the media files.
Method 1: Download the uploads directory with SFTP, FTP or your host’s file manager
This is generally the most dependable route for a large library because it retrieves files directly instead of asking WordPress to build one very large archive during a web request.

- Ask your host for the correct SFTP/FTP credentials or open the hosting control panel’s file manager. Prefer SFTP when your host offers it.
- Locate the WordPress installation and confirm the site’s actual uploads location. A common path is
/wp-content/uploads/, but hosts, multisite setups, custom configurations and offloaded-media services can differ. - Download the entire uploads directory, including its year/month subdirectories and any other folders used by the site.
- Check the local copy by comparing representative files, folder counts and total size. Open several image and non-image files to confirm they are not incomplete.
- Keep the downloaded files with a note of the site, date and location. If this is a migration or full backup, separately export the database and copy the rest of the server files.
This method gives you the file contents only. It does not recreate attachment records, alt text, captions, parent-post relationships, redirects, theme settings or plugin configuration.
Method 2: Use a WordPress plugin to create ZIP downloads
Plugins are convenient when you lack server access or need a selectable subset, but their advertised capabilities and limits vary. A plugin listing is a feature description, not a guarantee that a particular host can process an entire large library in one request.

Before starting a ZIP job
- Confirm which file types are included: some tools focus on images while your library may also contain PDFs, office files, audio or video.
- Check whether the output is flat or preserves year/month or plugin-created folders.
- Find out where the temporary archive is stored and when it expires; download it promptly.
- Review batch-size, daily-use and cooldown limits for your plan.
- Make sure the host has enough PHP memory, execution time and disk space. Very large jobs can fail even when the plugin supports them in principle.
Method 3: Export media metadata for an inventory
If the goal is an audit, accessibility review or migration checklist, use a metadata exporter rather than treating a spreadsheet as a file backup. The Export Media URLs listing describes CSV or JSON output with selectable fields including file name, URL, file size, MIME type, image dimensions, alt text, caption, description, parent post and usage information.
That export helps you identify missing alt text, map URLs and document what the library contains. It does not contain the binary contents of the images or other media, so pair it with an uploads-directory download or ZIP export when you need the actual files.

Choosing the right workflow

Large-library and failure precautions
Batch the work
If a plugin times out or hits memory limits, divide the library by year, folder or smaller selections. The free Media Bulk Download listing’s 20-file ZIP cap is a plugin-tier limit, not a WordPress-wide rule; its 10-ZIP daily limit and one-minute cooldown also apply per that listing.
Verify the result
Do not assume a successful browser download means every file was included. Check archive contents, sample original and large files, and confirm that the expected folder ranges are present. For server transfers, retain the directory hierarchy unless you have a reason to flatten it.

Watch temporary archives
Some plugins store generated ZIPs temporarily. Export Media as ZIP states a five-minute cleanup interval, so save the archive locally before that window closes. Treat such timing as plugin-specific and recheck the current listing before relying on it.

For a complete move, copy the server files and export the WordPress database; the database carries attachment records and the relationships between media and posts. You may also need themes, plugins, configuration files, rewrite rules and any externally stored or offloaded media. Ask your host where uploads actually reside if the site uses a nonstandard path or a media-storage service.
