There is no universal “download Google Book as PDF” button. A public-domain or rights-holder-authorized Full View title may offer a direct PDF download. An eligible ebook bought through Google Play Books may offer PDF export from the desktop website. Preview-only, rented, EPUB-only, and publisher-restricted books do not have a supported full-book PDF export. Downloads made for offline reading in the mobile app are app-managed copies, not ordinary PDF files.
First identify which Google book you have
“Google Books” can mean the search and preview service at books.google.com, while Google Play Books is the store and library for purchases, rentals, and uploads. The correct download method depends on the access shown for the title.

Download a public-domain book from Google Books
Google says books that are out of copyright and in the public domain can be downloaded as PDF copies. Its Full View documentation describes viewing, saving, and printing eligible public-domain books.

- Open the title at Google Books on a computer.
- Check that it says Full View, not Snippet View or a limited preview.
- Use the viewer’s Download PDF control, when displayed.
- Choose a save location and open the resulting file in Chrome, Preview, Acrobat Reader, or another PDF reader.
Button placement and availability can vary by title, country, browser, and Google’s interface. Full View alone is not a promise that every title exposes identical controls; the decisive test is whether Google presents an official download option. Scanned public-domain PDFs can also be large, image-based, and less searchable than modern ebooks.

Export a purchased Google Play Book as PDF
For an eligible purchase, use a computer browser rather than the mobile app:
- Go to Google Play and sign in to the account that owns the book.
- Select your profile, then Library & devices.
- Open Books.
- Find the title and select More beside it.
- Choose Export.
- Select Download PDF, if offered. Some titles show Download EPUB instead, or offer both.
Google’s export instructions state that publishers control export. A purchase therefore does not automatically mean you receive an unrestricted local PDF.
If Google gives you EPUB or ACSM
EPUB
An EPUB is a reflowable ebook. Use an EPUB-compatible reader such as Apple Books or Adobe Digital Editions. It is usually better than PDF on a small screen because text can resize, but it may not preserve the printed page layout.

An .acsm file is not the ebook and is not a defective PDF. It is authorization data that compatible software uses to retrieve an authorized EPUB or PDF. Install and authorize the supported ebook application, then open the ACSM file there. Do not rename it to .pdf or use a converter to bypass protection.
Offline reading on Android, iPhone, and iPad
Offline reading is different from file export. The Play Books app stores an app-managed copy that may not appear as a transferable PDF in your device’s file system.

Android
- Open Google Play Books and sign in.
- Open your library.
- Tap Download beside the book and confirm the offline indicator.
Google’s offline-reading help also documents Wi-Fi-only downloads and, on supported devices, storage to an SD card. Availability and limitations vary; Google notes specific offline restrictions for manga chapters.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Play Books app and use the same Google Account.
- Open the library’s Books tab.
- Tap Download beside the title.
This lets you read without an internet connection, but it does not create a normal PDF export.
Why “Download PDF” is missing
A missing option normally reflects a permission or format limitation, not a hidden URL. Check these conditions:
- The result is only a preview or snippet. Search visibility and partial reading do not grant full-book download rights; Google explains this in its copyright FAQ.
- The publisher has disabled export or printing.
- The title is a rental, which cannot be exported.
- The file is too large for export.
- Only EPUB export is supported.
- You are using the mobile app and need the desktop website’s Export menu.
- You are signed into a different Google Account.
- The title is DRM-protected and must be opened in authorized software.
Check the book’s Play Store Reading information section before buying; it can indicate supported formats and export restrictions.
Can you transfer a Google Play Book to Kindle?
Sometimes an exported, compatible file can be opened in another reader, but Google says most Google Play Books cannot be opened on Kindle devices. DRM, file format, account association, and device limits can all apply. Do not assume that an app download can be copied to a Kindle, Kobo, USB drive, or another app. Verify compatibility before purchase and use a supported EPUB/PDF reader for the authorized export.

DRM, printing, and lawful use
Digital rights management (DRM) is publisher-controlled access protection. A DRM-free PDF generally opens in standard software. A protected PDF or EPUB may be tied to your account or an authorized application, and printing may be limited. Google’s Play Books policies explain that DRM affects downloading, printing, and export.

Download only what Google, the publisher, or the rights holder makes available. Do not use browser tricks, screen capture, scraping, third-party “Google Books downloaders,” or DRM-removal tools to reconstruct a restricted book. A personal purchase does not grant permission to bypass technical controls or redistribute the title. For a restricted book, use Play Books offline mode, the supported export format, a library loan, or a publisher-authorized alternative.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm you are using the Google Account that purchased the book.
- Use the desktop Play website for export, not only the mobile app.
- Check that the title is owned rather than rented.
- Read the title’s Reading information and look for PDF or EPUB export support.
- Allow browser downloads and pop-ups, and ensure sufficient storage.
- Open EPUB files in an EPUB reader and ACSM files in authorized ebook software.
- Try signing out and back in as a basic account/session fix; this cannot override publisher restrictions.
- If the title is preview-only or export is disabled, there is no supported full-book PDF route.
Special cases
Printing: Google says printing is performed from a computer and may be limited by DRM; a PDF converter cannot legitimately add missing permission.
Audiobook “PDF”: An accompanying PDF may contain maps, charts, or appendices. Google’s audiobook help makes clear that this supplemental file is not necessarily the ebook’s full text.

Can I download any Google Book as a PDF?

Why can I read a book but not download it?
Reading access can be a preview, app-only offline license, or DRM-protected purchase. Those permissions are separate from file export.
Can I download Google Play Books on my phone as a PDF?
The mobile apps support offline reading, but transferable PDF export is handled from the desktop Play website when the title permits it.
Can I convert EPUB to PDF?
A reader may convert an authorized, DRM-free EPUB for personal format convenience, but conversion does not grant permission to defeat DRM or export a restricted book.
Are Google Books PDFs free?
Public-domain downloads offered by Google Books are generally free. A purchased title still follows its publisher’s price, export, and DRM rules.

The Bottom Line
Use the official control that matches your access: Download PDF in Google Books for an eligible Full View public-domain title, or desktop Export in Google Play Books for an eligible purchase. If Google shows only a preview, EPUB, ACSM, rental, or app-only access, there is no legitimate universal method for turning it into an unrestricted PDF.
