Yes—Google’s current requirements list Chrome for compatible Intel-based PCs running Windows 10. Download the installer from Google’s official Chrome page, run it, approve the Windows prompts, and wait for Chrome to open. One important caveat: Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so installing Chrome does not restore Windows security updates.
Check that your Windows 10 PC is compatible
Google lists Windows 10 and later for Chrome on Intel-based PCs, with an Intel Pentium 4 or newer processor that supports SSE3. Windows 10 alone does not guarantee compatibility: Google’s listed ARM processor support starts with Windows 11, not Windows 10. See Google’s Chrome system requirements.
The regular installation also needs an internet connection. On a work or school computer, an administrator may restrict software installation; ask the organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls.
Download and install Chrome
- Open Microsoft Edge or another browser already on the PC.
- Go directly to google.com/chrome and select Download Chrome. Avoid third-party download sites and lookalike buttons in advertisements.
- Accept Google’s terms if prompted. When the download finishes, open the installer from the browser’s download notification or the Downloads folder.
- If Windows asks whether to run the file, select Run. If User Account Control asks whether to allow the app to make changes, select Yes if you trust that you downloaded it from Google.
- Wait for installation to finish. Google says Chrome opens automatically after installation on Windows 10 and later.
Chrome is free to download and install; you do not need a paid Google service or subscription. Google’s installation instructions cover the standard and alternate-computer installation routes.

Choose whether to make Chrome your default browser
Chrome may offer to become the default browser when it first opens. You can accept or skip that choice. To change it later, open Chrome settings and search for default browser, then follow the Windows instructions displayed there. The exact prompts can vary between Windows and Chrome versions.
Signing in to a Google Account is optional for basic browsing. You can also choose whether to import bookmarks and settings from another browser during setup.

Install Chrome if the PC has no working browser or internet
If the target PC cannot download the installer, use another computer with internet access. Follow Google’s official alternate-computer or offline installation instructions, transfer the installer to the Windows 10 PC using a USB drive or another approved method, and run it there. For managed devices, use the organization’s approved deployment method. Do not use an installer from an unofficial mirror.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
- The download stalls or fails: Check the internet connection, then download a fresh copy from Google. Google also recommends its offline installation route if the standard downloader does not work.
- The installer will not start or says the operating system is unsupported: Confirm that the PC meets Google’s Windows and processor requirements. Check whether Chrome is already installed in the Start menu; opening the installer may simply launch an existing installation. If Chrome’s compatibility mode is enabled, turn it off and retry.
- Windows asks for administrator permission, or installation is blocked: Use an account with appropriate permission or contact the PC’s administrator. A work or school policy may intentionally prevent installation.
- There is not enough disk space: Free space on the system drive, usually C:, and try again. Google does not give a fixed minimum space figure in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Security software blocks installation: First verify the installer came from Google. Check the security software’s alert or settings; if you temporarily disable protection to test, re-enable it immediately afterward. Contact its vendor if the block persists.
- The PC is in Windows 10 S mode: S mode restricts apps to approved sources and can prevent installing Chrome this way. Google says switching out of S mode cannot be undone, so check the consequences carefully before choosing to switch.

What Windows 10 support ending means for Chrome
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides ordinary technical support, feature updates, or security updates for the operating system. This does not itself prevent Chrome from installing. Google’s consumer requirements list Windows 10 for compatible Intel systems; its enterprise requirements currently say Windows 10 Chrome deprecation is “Not yet scheduled,” which is not a promise of indefinite support.
A browser update cannot patch Windows itself. If the PC is not receiving continuing security coverage, consider moving to Windows 11 if the hardware supports it, checking eligibility for an applicable Extended Security Updates program, or replacing the device. If Chrome is not the right fit
- Microsoft Edge is normally included with Windows 10, so it is an easy fallback if installing another browser is not possible.
- Mozilla Firefox is an alternative for people who prefer a browser with an independent engine.
- Brave is another Chromium-based option, with built-in privacy and ad-blocking features that some users may not need.
