To download an image from an HTTPS link as a JPG, first determine whether the link is the image file itself or a webpage containing the image. Save the direct image response, check its actual format, and convert it only when necessary. Renaming a .png or .webp file to .jpg does not convert the data.
1. Tell a direct image URL from a webpage URL
An HTTPS URL can identify a webpage, an image, or another file. As the curl documentation explains, “The URL could itself refer to a webpage, an image or a file.” The address alone therefore cannot prove that you will receive JPEG bytes.
Open the link first
- If the browser shows only the picture, the address is probably a direct image resource.
- If you see an article, gallery, product page, login screen, or other layout, you have a webpage URL. Downloading that address with curl may save HTML rather than the picture.
On a webpage, locate the desired image and open it in its own tab when possible. Some sites use a thumbnail, a CSS background, or a lazy-loaded image, so the visible picture and the original file can have different URLs.
2. Save the image in a browser
Desktop Chrome
- Open the direct image URL, or open the page containing the image.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Save image as.
- Select a folder and enter a filename ending in
.jpgonly if you have confirmed the source is JPEG. - Click Save.
Chrome Help documents this desktop action. Other browsers, phones, tablets, and browser versions can use different menu labels; look for an equivalent save or download command. If the context menu saves the whole webpage, you right-clicked outside the image or the site is displaying a protected canvas rather than a normal image element.

3. Download a direct image with curl
curl is useful for repeatable downloads, scripts, and servers. It requires a build with TLS support for HTTPS. Use the actual image resource URL, not merely the page that displays it.
Choose the output filename with -o
curl -L -o image.jpg "https://example.com/path/image"-L follows redirects, and -o writes the response to the exact local name you provide. This controls the filename; it does not change the image encoding. If the response is WebP or PNG, the resulting file named image.jpg is still WebP or PNG.
Derive the filename with -O
curl -L -O "https://example.com/picture.jpg"-O (also called --remote-name) uses the final URL’s path name. For a server-suggested name, curl also supports -OJ, which combines remote-name saving with the Content-Disposition header:
curl -L -OJ "https://example.com/download?id=123"A server-provided name may be missing, misleading, or use an extension that does not match the bytes. Inspect the result rather than trusting its suffix.

f.write(r.content)This saves the response exactly as delivered. A production downloader should also check the response headers, limit maximum size, and handle authentication or rate limits according to the site’s terms.

JPEG is the image format identified by the media type image/jpeg. The common filename extensions are .jpg and .jpeg, but an extension is only a naming convention, not proof of the file’s encoding.
Check the response before saving
For a quick header check, request headers with curl:
curl -L -I "https://example.com/path/image"Look for a successful status and a Content-Type such as image/jpeg. A server can omit or misstate this header, especially after redirects, so also inspect the downloaded file with an image viewer or a file-identification utility available on your operating system.

5. Convert PNG, WebP, or another format to JPG
Changing the extension in a file manager does not rewrite the image. Conversion requires software that decodes the original format and encodes JPEG.
Windows Paint
- Open the downloaded image in Paint.
- Choose File and then Save as.
- Select JPEG picture (or JPEG) as the format.
- Choose a new filename and save it.
Microsoft says Paint can save JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, and other formats. The input formats Paint can open depend on the installed Paint and Windows version, so an unsupported WebP or other file may require a different image editor. Keep the original until you have verified the converted copy.
Understand the quality trade-off
JPEG uses lossy compression. Exporting a PNG, WebP, or other image to JPEG can discard detail, transparency, and some color information; transparent areas generally need a background color. Re-saving an existing JPEG can introduce additional loss, so avoid repeated JPEG exports when quality matters.
6. Troubleshoot failed downloads
The saved file opens as a web page
Check the file type or Content-Type. You probably used a page URL, were redirected to a sign-in page, or received a consent or bot-check document. Open the image itself in a new tab and download that address. If access requires a session, use the browser’s save command after signing in rather than copying an unauthenticated URL.

curl reports a certificate or TLS error
Use a current curl build with working certificate authorities and TLS support. Do not disable certificate verification as a routine fix: that removes HTTPS identity protection. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to update the trust store or provide the required proxy configuration.
The URL redirects or the name is wrong
Use -L to follow redirects. Prefer -o when you need a predictable local name, and inspect the final response before assigning a JPEG extension. -OJ can honor a server’s suggested name, but that name is not guaranteed to describe the actual format.
The image is blank, partial, or too small
The page may be serving a thumbnail, loading the image lazily, or requiring JavaScript. Look for an “open image” control, the original-image link, or the image element’s source in browser developer tools. A screenshot of the visible page is not the same as downloading the original asset.
Paint cannot open the file
That Paint installation may not decode the source format, or the download may not be an image at all. Confirm the response and use an editor that supports the input format before exporting to JPEG.

7. Reliability, privacy, and cost considerations
- Verify before deleting: compare the file size, open the image, and retain the original when conversion or quality is important.
- Expect access controls: signed URLs can expire, and private images may require cookies, authorization headers, or a logged-in browser session.
- Follow site rules: downloading does not grant permission to republish copyrighted images or bypass access restrictions.
- Plan for large or repeated jobs: use a script with timeouts, status checks, controlled concurrency, and a storage policy instead of launching unlimited parallel requests.

- Did the response return an image rather than HTML?

Can I download an image from any HTTPS link?
Only if the link is accessible and returns the image or a page from which you can legitimately access it. HTTPS describes the connection; it does not guarantee a public, direct image resource.
What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?
They are common filename extensions for the same JPEG image format; the extension does not by itself verify the file contents.
Why did my downloaded JPG have no picture?
The response may have been HTML, a redirect to authentication, a bot check, or an incomplete download. Check the response type and reopen the direct image URL.
